"wew" love song / "porno music" sound effect by RavenBurga in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]GNUGeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thaaaaaaaaats definitely a Wah-wah pedal. That effect is commonly reproduced by oscillating the pedal.

Heres a clip describing that particular riff - The rest of the documentary is excellent and worth a view. https://youtu.be/A0A8cPj_fPo?t=1575

If you don't want to go out and buy one, you can do it POST with a bandpass filter and a LFO controlling the frequency (or automation). If you are a guitar player - might as well invest in one because it adds a level of musical articulation to your sound, and you weren't using that foot anyways, right?

Is there a way to easily setup an email server? by meinleben1337 in linux

[–]GNUGeist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to the point, setting up any sort of mail server is beast in of its own kind. You have the SMTP protocol dictating who can send and what they can send & encode. POP3 and IMAP working off the same authentication system to allow clients to recieve mail. On top of all of that, most people want a web interface and spam filtering; so the rabbit hole goes deeper. I think I forgot to mention LDAP which deserves it.

Speaking of monolithic, I'd like to add (qmail)[http://qmail.omnis.ch/top.html] into the mix.

New GNU ethical criteria for code repositories emphasize privacy, freedom, and copyleft by pizzaiolo_ in programming

The quote is from the criteria for code repositories. There is a review process before a software package makes it into official repositories.

This has nothing to do with the licensing you use for your webapp.

So Im working on background music for tabletop rpgs and I am looking for feedback. by a_GM in rpg

[–]GNUGeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its nice and airy, very fitting for a Fantasy setting. Great snare work on "A square chance of dying." I like "Ruins Dungeon BGM" (which is awesome but the kick has some hifreq noise.) I'm guessing you know about clipping (where the sound wave gets 'clipped' off and makes terrible noises). Your spatial mixing (panning) and dynamic usage(note velocities) is getting better! I noticed that right off the gate on "Starting at square one."

What software are you using? The synths are clean and sound like they are from a SoundFont or a MIDI Wavetable.

Remember, silence can add emphasis, and sometimes less is more. Keep up the good work and do what you enjoy.

What has the ancient starship seen in its lifetime? by Lordxeen in rpg

[–]GNUGeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long was this ship in service? How many crews did it host?

Even if its a mind without its host starship - it'll still retain statistics, logs and records. Sufficing as company while the brain sits in solitude. If its going to be manifesting as a rambling lunatic - it could very well imitate, mock, and reminisce of notorious crew members.

Dataloss would be terrifying. First you are disconnected from your host ship - something that you could foresee. Second, your are disconnected from all your external sensors - so all you have it entertain you for eons is what you have in active memory.

Ninja EX250 electrical problem? Gage and running/brake lights out, parking works. by SuramKale in Fixxit

[–]GNUGeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A wild Electric Gremlin has appeared!

Congrats, its not going to be something crazy complicated - its going to be a broken circuit somewhere.

Fuses are designed to blow - http://faq.ninja250.org/wiki/How_to_check_the_fuses (Easy to check, cheap to replace.)

Fuse No. 4 (10A) provides +12vdc via a Red/Blue conductor to:

  • License Plate Lamp
  • Brake Switch - Rear
  • Brake Switch - Front
  • Ignition Switch
  • Dash Illumination Lamps (Gauge Cluster)

Moving on! Wires you are concerned with go from there to the front of the bike to your instrument cluster. There will be two connectors tucked in the head fairing.

Aside from a solid connection, keep an eye out for worn insulation, pinched wires - or things that could cause it.

From there everything goes to destination(s) and returns to the ground.

Edit: Nice work !

Control group for broodmother by jailwall in DotA2

[–]GNUGeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. Try using box select when you want to micro a part of the zerg. Select a portion of the zerg to the nearest jungle camp and make some new ones.

Alternatively you can try to single out the spiderites when throwing them at creep camps - but the way they all stack on top of eachother makes it hard to doubleclick. idk if theres a shortcut for that.

Help diagnosing EX500 knocking noise? by yoplate in motorcycles

[–]GNUGeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its on the rear brakes - make sure the plate that holds the rear calipers is aligned with the swingarm. (prevents the caliper from rotating w/ the rotor + wheel under braking.) Ref: Part 43034-1131 - HOLDER-BRAKE,REAR CALIPER

Other than that, motor + exhaust sounds healthy. I couldn't distinguish too much from the audio, was that idling and standing still?

Anyways, the bike is very well balanced for its class and you will feel a lot of road in the handlebars. You shouldn't ever need a steering dampener on this bike.

Help diagnosing EX500 knocking noise? by yoplate in motorcycles

[–]GNUGeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knock on wood, but I have not had any issues like this yet. Heres a search of the ex500 forums for similar issues, ranging from bearings to camshafts (and more serious issues as well)

The radiator fan is controlled by your thermostat on the left side of the radiator. If you unplug the leads from the thermostat (with the bike on) and touch them together, the fan should kick on (allowing you to test the motor). The whole thing won't kick on until water temperatures reach about 180-200 degrees fahrenheit.

Also, there is /r/fixxit and local motorcycle repair shops if you aren't quite eager to tear apart the engine only to find the P/O didn't believe in oil changes. GL yoplate!

How many people own & use the Spitfire turret? If you don't own or use a spitfire why do you not own one? by [deleted] in Planetside

[–]GNUGeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Spitfire is like having a bad teammate watching over your back. So bad, he'll shoot your idiot teammate in the chest before dying himself. The spitfire is a bullet magnet! That little beeper encourages everyone to charge in to blow it up.

So I start with the Cons:

  • Your spitfire will not get you many kills.
  • your spitfire will feed the enemy.
  • you will have to redeploy/resupply a lot in order to prepare for max or emp rushes.
  • you will need to defend your spitfire with AP mines, which is fine because you are playing redeployside2.
  • you will need access to LoS on the spitfire in order to determine the source of the potential threat.
  • the spitfire is not safe from stalker-cloaked infiltrators and indirect fire.
  • did I mention it is powerless against every class and player that is even remotely situationally aware? I wish it was little drone that screams when it spots an enemy and rockets after them like a pathing homing missile (doing less damage for distance travelled, but leave a tracer.)

Pros:

  • kinda useful during those crazy lagstorms, where people are darting around rooms and through buildings.
  • also kinda secure kills trapping and turret last-hitting.
  • is at least another target for fire while solo. Its still best to stay nearby.
  • it detects stationary targets. You know, that cheeky light assault on the server rack beside you.
  • Max ambushing w/ a thrifty crew. Beep Beep comes the AI max.

Tips:

The transparent placement model is very useful for laying camp. Identify ledges, boxes, and zones where you can place the spitfire. You can deploy it on railings and most rooftops. Indoors, its pairs nicely with a shotgun and AP mines. It seems to only excel in certain situations where there is light resistance and ally activity.

Drop it on the move when the Hive arrives and motion spotters detect enemies that no one sees. Its accuracy will pick off light assault in sky and medics in the crowd. However, a few assists after placing it, the poor spitfire's location has been revealed and calls for a quick sticky grenade burialdeploy.

Elevating it can prevent it from shooting allies and provide slightly more of a challenge vs. a conventional grenade. Curse those infiltrators when you see/hear an EMP grenades as your mines spontaneously detonate, and expect a sudden rush of enemy. Conserve your deployables as much as possible in the presence of friendly maxes. If it has escalated to MAX Assault, just save that shitfire until a situational need arises. (does it exist?)

However, wonderful artwork! Thank you for sharing! If she ever asks for inspiration, suggest the Ch9 Castle (Elsinore Castle), The Taft Museum, and perhaps the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. I'd suggest the mushroom house but it has absolutely no redeeming architectural qualities.

Live-streamed development of a web-based MUD game? by astrofault in MUD

[–]GNUGeist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It feels like the next logical step.

However, this entirely breaks the traditional 'MUD' wheel. You won't be able to just port a MOO, MUD or really draw from any existing codebase, because HTTP lacked the ability for long-polling, so the scripting languages fell short. You can request a page, but the server couldn't just send you an update without you asking for it. Now, with javascript, node.js, and lets throw socket.io in there too. So its completely possible now and enter all the crazy webgames, facebook, etc.

How will data be stored and accessed on the server side? MUDs use flatfiles, the server process is all-knowing, and are partitioned into Zones/Areas (as a form of ACL I believe).

So your idea is feasible, but relatively daunting. Here some server milestones:

  1. The Interaction Chamber - First step is creating the core communication model, and buffers. Yup! lets start with the chat room fellas. Identification is a must, but should it be required? I like the idea of inviting people to explore and require registration before being able to interact.
  2. People and Characters - Add a level of detail to those usernames. I would suggest keeping it simple and universal (avoiding races/classes.)
  3. Basic World - Rooms and Exits. Often exits are double linked ( a northern exit may or may not correlate with a southern exit in the target room. Traps, Mazes, etc. ) and can be tied to a door object.
  4. Objects - We explore the verbs of the world, as well as the complexity of objects.

The goal is really to recreate the interactive text world environment of a MUD in a web browser. The UIX is going to face additional issues.

  1. Color coding - I think a lot of color codes can be abstracted out of the equation by deferring that to CSS classes, depending on what is being represented. This can hand the ability to customize colors to the users without having to edit underlying data structures.
  2. Data Entry - I feel what makes a MUD is they keyboard. There should be absolutely no reason to touch the mouse! (but it should be useful still, I'm just emphasizing the need for context and hotkeys.)
  3. How many mouse operations are we considering? clicking an object pops up with available options?
  4. The Compass and beyond! - There is a lot to consider here, because it defines how the world is shaped. Twine just uses a hyperlink within the body of the text to handle navigation. Meanwhile, the cardinal directions still give people a slightly easier time figuring out where they are, as well as support future mapping mods.

</dump>

Let me know when you get it started, I would be happy to assist in any ways possible.

Placing custom towers by [deleted] in Dota2Modding

[–]GNUGeist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good for you - at least knowing you are using the holdout mod helps out a little...

How would you like to spawn the tower?

  • If you want to just instantiate it within the map editor (Hammer), you can copy and paste one of the holdout towers, edit the 'Name' to be something unique and that can be referenced later... down near the bottom of the Object Properties is the 'Unit Name' which will match up with the unit definition that you created earlier.

I believe you will need to modify the Models and ownership. I got it mostly working except my test towers rotate to look at the target.

  • If you are wanting it to be spawned with a hero ability or item - there are tutorials that are starting to pop up. I'm choosing not to get ahead of myself.

EDIT: Code and media are worth thousands of words. You've probably already done these.
