Research

I lead a diverse research program at the interface of climate science, marine science, and public policy. In order to ensure policy relevance, my research program continually asks new questions and crosses disciplinary boundaries.

Lab Team

The team of students and researchers in my Climate and Coastal Ecosystem Laboratory (CCEL) study an array of interdisciplinary climate problems, from the fate of the world's coral reefs to the challenges of adaptation in the developing world.

Maribo:

My blog with thoughts and stories about climate change, the oceans, and science communication from myself and colleagues. Field trip photos can be found here.

Engagement

As a scientist, writer, and public speaker, I regularly work with community groups, policymakers, and the media in Canada and abroad to educate about climate change and to help bridge the gap between science and policy.

Kiribati Research

I have been working with local government and communities in the Republic of Kiribati since 2005 to understand the effects of climate change and to build research capacity. Papers, reports, and videos are available here, with more to come.

Assist Research in Kiribati

- Donate used or new SCUBA and snorkeling gear
- Donate funds for shipping costs and continuing research costs
- Donate used children’s books

Prospective Students

I am always open to talking to creative, motivated individuals with strong analytical skills hoping to do graduate degrees or post-doctoral research specializing in some aspect of climate change.

Prospective students can apply through the Department of Geography, the RES program, or the Atmospheric Science Program.

Before you contact me, I recommend looking at some of my group's publications as a guide to potential research areas.

What’s New

Blowing our climate change budget with pipelines.

Can Canada reduce greenhouse gas emissions while still supporting western Canada's oil industry?

New paper on the dangers of commercializing climate science for adaptation in the developing world.
