Software Freedom Conservancy
Software Freedom Conservancy is a not-for-profit charity that helps promote, improve, develop, and defend Free, Libre, and Open Source Software (FLOSS) projects. Conservancy provides a non-profit home and infrastructure for FLOSS projects. This allows FLOSS developers to focus on what they do best — writing and improving FLOSS for the general public — while Conservancy takes care of the projects' needs that do not relate directly to software development and documentation.

Linux Australia Sponsors Conservancy with A$10,000 Donation
Linux Australia just donated A$10,000 to Software Freedom Conservancy. At the closing session of this year’s linux.conf.au, President Hugh Blemings remarked:
On behalf of the Council I’d like to announce… that we’re actually in the process of making a significant donation from Linux Australia to Software Freedom Conservancy as well. I urge all of you to consider contributing individual as well, and there is much left for us to be done as a community on that front.
This donation fulfills that promise to sponsor Conservancy’s work supporting the free and open source software community. Conservancy’s Executive Director Karen Sandler commented, “This donation is very meaningful to us both for the monetary amount and the fact that it represents such strong support from so many individuals who are passionate about software freedom and Conservancy.”

Bdale Garbee joins Software Freedom Conservancy's Evaluations Committee
Software Freedom Conservancy announces today that it has appointed Bdale Garbee to its Evaluations Committee. The committee evaluates projects applying to Conservancy and selects which ones get offered membership. Meeting monthy, the committee serves as a gatekeeper, monitoring Conservancy's mission to support, promote and defend software freedom. The evaluations conducted by the comittee are often complex and require a very broad collective skill set to be successful. Ensuring that there are a strong group of independent commttee members who are experts in the field is fundamental. The Evaluations Committee is appointed by Conservancy's Board of Directors.

ICYMI: “Companies, Free Software, and You”
Posted by Karen Sandler on December 8, 2016
At this year’s LibrePlanet, I presented “Companies, Free Software, and You” as a keynote presentation. In the talk, I take a hard look at companies’ engagement in the free software community, dissecting which contributions are productive and weighing them against instances where their interests might diverge from the rest of the community’s.
When that happens, Conservancy is a strong independent voice fighting for the community’s interests, in project leadership, employment agreements, license compliance, and more. Please support Conservancy today to keep the conversation balanced!
System improvements at Conservancy
Posted by Brett Smith on December 7, 2016
When I joined Conservancy, we discussed system administration as one of my early responsibilities. (One of many—you might remember the long list of possible functions for my position.) Like any organization our size, there are plenty of improvements to our systems that we wanted to make, but were tough to prioritize against our other responsibilities. Since I joined in August, I’ve kept an eye out for easy opportunities to invest a little time now that will save us effort in the long run. As we start looking back on 2016, I wanted to highlight some of the public-facing improvements that I’ve made as part of this effort, and share a little about the tools and services that make them possible.
