This is often a mean girl, but not the pretty mean girl because she already gets the attention. This is a less intelligent, less attractive mean girl who bullies her way into getting noticed because she isn’t nice, smart or pretty enough to get the kind of attention she wants.</p><p If he makes it to Easter, 2016, he will be 20 years old.</p><p class="qtext_para">He most definitely has dementia. I work as a nurse with predominately seniors, &amp; cared for a family member with dementia, and Kita behaves exactly the same.</p><p class="qtext_para">He has good days and bad days. On every day he is clearly confused about whether he just came in from the outside, or if he needs to go now. (More so than that in/out game all pets seem to love to play.). If the weather is bad he forgets, and will ask over and over for you to open the door, and acts surprised every time that it&#039;s raining.</p><p class="qtext_para">Did he just eat? Don&#039;t remember but he loves to eat and being hyperthyroid, he&#039;s too skinny, so we put him in front of a plate of food 20-30 times a day, and he eats a few bites each time...only to ask again in that special meow that 19 years has taught us both that someone needs to feed him. Of course, we go through the motions of feeding him again, and again, and again. I&#039;m happy to do it all day long.</p><p class="qtext_para">Wheres the litter box?! Well, we moved it closer, (who needs a dining room anyway?), his nose leads the way.</p><p class="qtext_para">He will go into one room, and clearly have no idea why he went in there, only to turn around and wonder why he&#039;s in that room. Sometimes he cycles like this &amp; I&#039;ll redirect him. Food works.</p><p class="qtext_para">But he remembers many things too. Like a human, his long term memory is very much still intact. (Last 2 go). He knows me, my husband, our 3 dogs, but that pesky new cat confuses him. She looks like a cat he knew and loved, but this new one smells different. Fortunately he has always been a mellow cat, so most of the time he just goes with the flow, but he is clearly often surprised by her smell. Many other of his long term behaviors remain intact. Lap time, nail clipping, poke you in the face for attention time. He&#039;s been doing those for years. It&#039;s only the new stuff he has trouble with.</p><p class="qtext_para">Before anyone suggest he&#039;s suffering, rest assured, this cat has a better life and better health care than I do. It&#039;s our family&#039;s choice to repay this guys long years of service as a foot and bed warmer by doing every thing we can to ease his golden years. If you can&#039;t understand that, 1) why have you even read this far?, 2) I pity you.</p><hr class="qtext_hr" /><p class="qtext_para">Well, he made it to 20! His dementia continues, perhaps a bit worse. We cook for him weekly, and he mostly eats only roast chicken and a rich stock made from that chicken. But the weather is warming, that warm spot by the back door is still all his, and we are still grateful for every day he is still with us. We have a wonderfully caring and understanding vet. Today he made it clear we are 100% into hospice care now. Whatever will make him comfortable, whatever will improve Kita&#039;s quality of life, that&#039;s what we will do. So he has a few more meds to take, and this vegetarian will still be cooking a chicken every week because my buddy likes chicken. We are lucky that Kita&#039;s dementia is the pleasant kind, but the end of dementia for cats is the same as people. It will take a miracle for him to see 21, but every day is a miracle here. He&#039;s happy. He’s so incredibly powerful that he rarely has to worry about getting hurt. He has a secret identity, but he doesn’t need to have one. Clark Kent is the fake, Superman is the reality.</p><p class="qtext_para">Batman is supposed to be just a man, but he’s continually written as being godlike. Able to dodge lasers or take punches from people who can shatter planets. On top of that he’s a billionaire who was born into his money. He’s just not relatable. He’s similar to Superman in that his secret identity is basically a fake. He’s more Batman than Bruce Wayne.</p><p class="qtext_para">Spider-Man is the only other hero that can measure up to the history and popularity of those two juggernauts. He’s been popular since Stan Lee had the idea of having a relatable hero. Someone with extraordinary abilities who still had human troubles.</p><p class="qtext_para">That’s one of the biggest factors that makes Spider-Man so awesome. He does what he does and still has to work to pay the bills. He still worries about paying his rent on time. He worries about his Aunt May. He has girlfriend problems. His boss treats him like dirt. He’s just like you and me, except with powers.</p><p class="qtext_para">It’s easier to imagine myself becoming Spider-Man than it is Superman or Batman. Those two are much more mythological than Spider-Man. Peter Parker is the hero of the people. He’s one of us.</p><p class="qtext_para">On top of all that though, he’s just so much fun! Deadpool has tried to be as funny, but he just isn’t. Sure, he’s hilarious and cool. They beat the shit out of her while her friend ran away. <br />When my parents came home and saw her my mum just lost her shit and called my uncle. I should mention that the way my mum deals with things isn&#039;t always conventional.<br /><br />My uncle was a retired gang member who was now running a campaign against bullying (Weird. I know but it&#039;s 100% true) and he told her &quot;Don&#039;t worry I&#039;ll sort it out&quot;<br /><br />He and his sons visited the families of the bullies (apparently they knew them) and said this<br /><br />&quot;Everyday next week our boys are going to give your son a hiding after school. Tell him not to run away. That will make it worse. After a week, that&#039;ll be it.&quot;<br /><br />It was a weird community okay?<br /><br />So that&#039;s what they did.<br />She never had problems from them again. <br /><br />Just a note:<br /><br />I don&#039;t necessarily agree with how they went about it but at the time it was very satisfying. I was super involved in extra-curriculars and I took all honors/AP/college classes. Of course I was exhausted all the time. Everyone was, right? …Right?</p><p class="qtext_para">Yeah, apparently not.</p><p class="qtext_para">To paraphrase a comparison I found somewhere online: having <b>narcolepsy </b>is like having a cell phone that dies completely and takes 10 hours on the charger just to get up to 45%. From there, it can&#039;t hold its charge and it dies again in a few hours.</p><p class="qtext_para">Another thing people with narcolepsy say often: we feel the same way after sleeping for 8 hours that some people feel after having *not* slept for 24–48 hours straight.</p><p class="qtext_para">Some random facts about my experience with narcolepsy:</p><ul><li>Sleep doesn&#039;t work for me. It isn&#039;t restful.</li><li>After my Tuesday/Thursday 8:15–9:40 AM class, I go home and sleep for 6–8 hours. I feel more tired when I wake up than I did before I slept.</li><li>According to my sleep study, it only takes me around three and a half minutes to fall asleep at any given time—even if I&#039;ve already taken four previous naps that day.</li><li>Sometimes it physically hurts to be so tired.</li><li>I once decided to take a nap at noon on a Saturday. When I woke up, it was 2 PM… Sunday. I slept nonstop through an entire day.</li><li>The Disney princess I&#039;m obligated to relate most to is Sleeping Beauty which is awful because she sucks and is the worst.</li></ul><p class="qtext_para">Edit 11/30: Thank you so much for the kind words &amp; concern! I have been officially diagnosed with narcolepsy for some months now, so I&#039;m certain there&#039;s not another underlying issue at play (I do also have depression &amp; PTSD but have been seeing a psychologist for those things since this spring). I have a fabulous, well-versed sleep doctor who I like very much. It took about six weeks, but I have finally adjusted to my medication and have been feeling good since. I don&#039;t take the pill every day, but when I do take it, I can definitely feel it helping! I&#039;m not sure where I go from here; I think it&#039;s pretty much meds for the rest of my life. He is currently just really tired, but feels fine. He had gotten out from the hospital after just six days, but then at a checkup, the doctor found that he had a high white blood cell count, and had to go back. It ended up being nothing, and he came back after another 6 days. I asked him what was replaced, and he said: aortic valve, and aortic arch.</p><p class="qtext_para">EDIT #2: I saw in the comments that some people were wondering how I&#039;m 11 now. I turned 11 in the time inbetween when I was told and when I wrote this answer. Also, in the comments I saw that someone thought it was my dads heart that was 2x bigger, to clarify, I wrote valve in parenthesis next to heart. My parents said heart, because my brother was 7. Though she had seen a doctor and been told to simply rest and drink plenty of fluids, within few days, she returned to the ER, this time extremely ill with viral pneumonia. Doctors had suggested that she be sedated and intubated so that they may deliver medicines directly to her lungs and airways, but before we could discuss this option, her lungs collapsed and doctors were forced to do an emergency intubation. Within hours, her major organs began to fail, specifically her liver and her kidneys. Within the first two days of hospitalization, my wife was transferred to three different hospitals, as her condition was growing more grave, it seemed, by the hour, and only one area hospital ICU was equipped to handle her extensive care.</p><p class="qtext_para">My wife was placed in an induced coma, put on 24-hr dialysis, had a multitude of tests and special procedures done, all to little or no effect. However, despite her persistent illness, the medical team took her out of the induced coma after a week, as they feared leaving her so heavily sedated could create more problems for her down the line. After fifteen days, during which time my wife began small bouts of physical and occupational therapy (all the while intubated and on 24-hr dialysis), the doctors believed she had showed enough progress that they decided to remove her breathing tube. For those of you who haven&#039;t either been intubated for long periods of time nor have been around someone who has only recently been extubated, let me explain that it takes several hours to a couple of days before one can speak after having the tube taken out (both due to inflamed vocal chords, as well as an inability to articulate from non-use of the tongue and mouth during extended intubation). Despite this, within an hour of the extubation, my amazing, determined wife, smiling the most beautiful smile I have ever seen, was able to enunciate well enough to say, “I love you,” to me—the last words she would ever speak to anyone. Within a few hours after the extubation, however, her breathing again deteriorated, and doctors were forced to intubate her and place her on mechanical ventilation once more. The progress that had been made during the first two weeks of hospitalization seemed to evaporate in an instant as her breathing became erratic, her blood pressure dropped precipitously, and the doctors felt it best she be placed in an induced coma once again.</p><p class="qtext_para">While in the hospital, doctors from several different teams (hepatology, nephrology, infectious disease) were never able to determine an underlaying cause nor find a viable treatment for all of this--her body, in its extremely weakened state, never fully recovered from the influenza-b virus, and while they suspected a secondary infection to have taken root, they were unable to find one. Then, shortly before midnight exactly three weeks to the day she was first hospitalized, my wife succumbed to her condition, having developed a fatal arterial hemorrhage in her abdomen that could not be stopped by any means—that she remained alive long enough that we might all say our final goodbyes was only due to the desperate work of the ICU nurses and doctors, and the extreme measures of life support she was on. Her entire family, her best friend, and I were all there with her, surrounding her, as she was taken off life support and passed, rather peacefully, from this life. Her mother sang to her, &quot;you are my sunshine,&quot; her father held her hand, and I ran my fingers through her hair, as she had always loved so much, as she drew her last breath and her heart beat its final beat. She was 32.</p><p class="qtext_para">As we walked from the ICU so the nurses could remove all of the tubes and wires and clean her body so that we might see her one last time, I felt entirely numb, as if I were watching this all unfold from afar to some other husband, some other family I didnt know. As we made our way to a courtyard just outside the hospital’s main entrance, I felt my legs give way as I collapsed in a heap on the concrete walkway. Tears ran down my face in rivers as I choked on every sob and shook uncontrollably. After what seemed like an eternity, my wife’s best friend and her husband holding me tightly from either side all the while, I was finally able to compose myself long enough to breathe, stand, and form this single coherent thought: that nothing has ever been this painful. That nothing will ever be this painful again.</p><p class="qtext_para">We held my wife’s memorial exactly one week following her death. Her service was attended by almost 200 guests, with so many more responding with their love who were unable to attend. hold my job as a teacher in my home state I have to be a member of The Victorian Institute of Teaching. After about the third day, my parents, my sister, and I met in the living room, and decided that there needed to be a new rule: We could ask <i>what</i>, but we should not ask <i>why</i>. It took considerable brainpower just determining <i>what</i> some of these things were . . . trying to figure out <i>why</i> my grandparents had them, that was really just too much.</p><p class="qtext_para">They grew up during the Great Depression, and then became quite wealthy and materialistic. If you found something, you would also find the original packaging, and receipt. There were multiple backup sets of luxury items that were never opened, such as gold silverware and nearly two dozen place settings of extremely expensive china, still sealed in the box.</p><p class="qtext_para">The oddest find, though, was in the basement. For 55 years, my grandfather had gotten the weekly newspaper from his hometown in Illinois mailed to him. He kept every one. (We’re just grateful it wasn’t a daily paper!) Additionally, the adrenaline your body produces during combat works like a laxative and this can cause diarrhea.<br /><br />Diarrhea, though is a serious problem. Not so much in an actual firefight, but when you are moving around with your squad or platoon. At the time she didn&#039;t even have an undergraduate degree. She went to school and threw herself into it with a voracious passion that was absolutely awe-inspiring to watch. <br /><br />She picked up two Masters degrees, one in bioinformatics with a minor in pure mathematics (because she discovered, quite by accident, that mathematics turns her on--as in literally causes her to be sexually aroused) and one in neurobiology, then ended up in a Ph.D. program in neurobiology rather than nanotech. Today she works in a lab doing pure research on the brain&#039;s proteome, with the goal of seeking to reverse aging-related brain degeneration.<br /><br />It has been amazing to watch. When she made the choice to do it, she pursued it with a passion and zeal I have never seen before or since. It is absolutely incredible how she has allowed nothing to stand in her way. She decided she wanted to make a difference in the world and she has allowed nothing to stop her.<br /><br />I wrote an essay about it some years ago when she went back to school, if you&#039;re interested.
