Self-censorship despite some reforms

Liberia is the first West African country to adopt a law protecting freedom of information and the first African country to elect a woman president, one who was joint winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011. But media freedom continues to be quite limited. Journalists are sentenced to pay exorbitant fines and are then jailed for not paying them. Self-censorship is widespread, and the media steer clear of taboo subjects such as the president’s family and government corruption.
