Splashscreen contributions

For the next digiKam releases, the digiKam team needs photographs for digiKam and Showfoto splash-screens. Proposing photo samples as splash-screens is a simple way for users to contribute to digiKam project. The pictures must be correctly exposed/composed, and the subject must be chosen from a real photographer’s inspiration. Note that we will add a horizontal frame to the bottom of the image as in the current splashes.

Qt 5.15 LTS used in AppImage bundle

As with the previous release, we take care about upgrading the Qt framework with a LTS version. Since Qt 5.15.2, the framework is only published privately to the registered clients from the Qt Company. By chance, the KDE project deals with the Qt company to provide a rolling relea se of the whole Qt framework including all the most important patches. This is the Qt collection patch used from now by the digiKam AppImage bundle. This allows digiKam to benefit from important fixes as to support the most recent version of Mysql and Mar iadb database in the QtSql plugin. Even if Qt 5.15.5 is just released as open-source, more than one year later 5.15.2, we will continue to use the Qt Collecti on Patch, as the last customer Qt5 release is 5.15.10. So there exists again a serious gap between the open-source and the customer versions of Qt.

Long time ago, the AppImage packaging suffered from an important lack of International Components for Unicode (ICU) support. Typically, digiKam and Showfoto deal with the string internally using Qt, but the framework was not compiled with the ICU library to handle properly all string encoding used over the world.

It has been a while since the last update of digiKam Recipes. But that doesn’t mean I neglected the book. In the past few months, I’ve been doing a complete language review and adding new material. The new revision of digiKam Recipes features detailed information on how to move digiKam library and databases from one machine to another, how to access digiKam remotely from any machine, and how to import photos from an iOS device. The book now uses the Barlow font for better legibility along with a slightly improved layout.

ExifTool Support

The famous ExifTool is now supported officially in parallel than the former Exiv2 shared library to handle file metadata. ExifTool is a powerful tool that we will use in special cases to fix metadata dysfunctions that we cannot solve using Exiv2. An ExifTool metadata viewer have been appended to the metadata sidebar everywhere in digiKam. The view works exactly as the Exiv2 version, including the metadata entries filter. ExifTool supports a largest list of file formats than Exiv2.

With this new release we are following the Exiv2 project which is in release stage for their next stable release to 0.27 planed for December 2018. This library is a main component of digiKam used to interact with file metadata, like populating database contents, updating item textual information, or to handling XMP side-car for read only files.

Dear digiKam fans and users, following the long stage of integrating a lots of work from students during the Summer of Code we are proud to announce the first beta of digiKam 6.0.0.

Improvements and Fixes

The next major version 6.0.0 looks promising, and will introduce new features as:

Full support of video files management working as photos.
An integration of all import/export web-service tools in LightTable, Image editor and Showfoto.
Raw file decoding engine supporting new cameras.
Similarity data is now stored in a separate file.
Simplified web-service authentication using OAuth protocol.
New tools to export to Pinterest, OneDrive and Box web-services.
The capability to re-organize the icon-view contents manually.

A huge factoring of source code has been done to reduce external dependencies again with the goal to simplify application compilation, packaging and maintenance for the next years.

Following the release of 5.8.0 published in January, the digiKam team is proud to announce the new release 5.9.0 of the digiKam Software Collection. In this last version of 5.x, we has focused all developements to close bugs.

Improvements and Fixes

Many small fixes has been commited over XMP sidecar support in this release but the most important works will be tested with next main release has these requires regression tests. Mysql support has also recieve fixes about database schema migration which can introduce errors while converting old database files generated with digiKam 4.x.

Once again a lot has been going on behind the scenes since the last release. The HTML gallery tool is back, database shrinking (e.g. purging stale thumbnails) is also supported on MySQL, grouping has been improved and additional sidecars can now be specified. Therefore the release of 5.6.0 will be (is already) delayed, as we would like to invite you to test all these features. As usual they are available in the pre-release bundles or obviously directly from the git repository. Please report any dysfunctions, unexpected behaviour or suggestions for improvement to our bug tracker.

The folks from the PIXLS.US community saw that digiKam needed an update to the old website (previously running on an older Drupal instance) for security reasons and they wanted to help out. So after several weeks of hard work, the digiKam team has deployed a new look-and-feel for the website that is easier to navigate and mobile-friendly. Don’t worry, all the content from the old website has been preserved so all the old links should be fine. You can find the links to this content in the footer of the new site.

A digiKam Overview

digiKam is an advanced digital photo management application, which makes importing and organizing digital photos a “snap”. The photos are organized in albums which can be sorted chronologically, by folder layout or by custom collections.

Tired of the folder constraints? Don’t worry, digiKam also provides tagging. You tag your images which can be spread out across multiple folders, and digiKam provides fast and intuitive ways to browse these tagged images. You can also add comments to your images. digiKam makes use of a fast and robust database to store these meta-informations which makes adding and editing of comments and tags very reliable.

How to get digiKam from git master repository

Stage 1: Install external dependencies

digiKam requires a lot of libraries. So, before compiling yourself digiKam, you’ll have to download and install them.

The up to date dependencies list is given in the Dependencies To Compile And Link Source Code from the API documentation for developers)

Most of these dependencies will be available as developement packages from your Linux distribution, generally with a “-devel” postfix (as libgphoto2-devel for ex), and can be installed separatly using the system packages manager as apt (Ubuntu, Debian, …), yum (RedHat, Fedora, CentOS, …), zipper (Suse, OpenSuse, …), etc.

You can install digiKam using pre-compiled version. This is done by your distribution. A disadvantage is that in some cases the version provided by your distribution is not the latest stable version the digiKam team has released. Installing a tarball will get you the most up-to-date stable version of digiKam. But it can happen that you run into all kinds of problems related to compiling.

So, if your distribution is running behind a lot, you can install a tarball.

Before installing a tarball, it is better to prevent conflicts to uninstall the digiKam package provided by your distribution.

My camera is not in the list of supported cameras in digiKam.

Can you add drivers for my camera ?

digiKam doesn’t included any camera drivers. It makes use of gphoto2 to do camera operations. If your camera is not in the supported list, i would recommend doing some searching around. Many of the new cameras actually provide a USB MassStorage Device Interface, so that you can access the camera like a hard disk. (See, the FAQ about using a USB MassStorage Camera with digiKam).

Dear digiKam fans and users,

Following the 5th release 5.4.0 published in January 2017, the digiKam team is proud to announce the new release 5.5.0 of digiKam Software Collection. As 5.4.0, this version introduces again several improvements in database interface.

This time, Mario Frank has significantly improved the threads management done in background to prevent an overload of the computer under intensive workload by batch processing of items. The maintenance now does not generate massive amounts of threads anymore. Instead, we use a queue based approach to level the load on the CPUs more appropriately. This should improve the re-activeness during maintenance.

Following the 4th release 5.3.0 for the 5.x series published in November 2016, the digiKam team is proud to announce the new release 5.4.0 of digiKam Software Collection. This version introduces several improvements to the similarity search engine and a complete re-write of video file support.

Our new contributor Mario Frank has significantly improved the usability of the fuzzy sidebar functionality by offering more information to the user. In duplicates search, every result now contains the average similarity of the potential duplicates to the original. This information can be used to sort the results. The individual elements of the duplicate search result can be sorted by similarity to the original image now, which also works in fuzzy search and sketch search.

Geotagging in digiKam with a Lazy Bash Script

Sometimes, the easiest way to geotag photos in digiKam is to copy and paste geographical coordinates from an existing photo. I usually use Google Photos for that, as it conveniently displays geographical coordinates of the currently viewed photos in the information sidebar.

There is only one problem with this technique: copying and pasting the geographical coordinates directly doesn't work.

After a 3rd release 5.2.0 published more than one month ago, the digiKam team is proud to announce the new release 5.3.0 of digiKam Software Collection. This version introduces an important common solution to deploy the application under Linux using AppImage bundle.

AppImage is an open-source project dedicated to provide a simple way to distribute portable software as compressed binary file, that standard user can run as well, without to install special dependencies. All is included into the bundle, as last Qt5 and KF5 frameworks. AppImage use Fuse file-system, which is de-compressed into a temporary directory to start the application. You don't need to install digiKam on your system to be able to use it. Better, you can use the official digiKam from your Linux distribution in parallel, and test the new version without any conflict with one used in production. This permit to quickly test a new release without to wait an official package dedicated for your Linux box. Another AppImage advantage is to be able to provide quickly a pre-release bundle to test last patches applied to source code, outside the releases plan.

digiKam Explained: Chroma Subsampling

When configuring saving settings for the JPEG format in the Saving Images section of the Configure digiKam window, you can choose between medium and high chroma subsampling, or disable it altogether.

But what is chroma subsampling and what does it do? As you may know, JPEG is a lossy format, which means that it trades quality for a smaller size. One of the methods for achieving a smaller size is to store color information (chroma) at a lower resolution than brightness (a.k.a intensity or luma) data. This is possible due to the fact that the human eye is less sensitive to color than brightness, so discarding color information doesn't produce a perceptible loss of quality.

The digiKam Team is proud to announce the release of digiKam Software Collection 4.14.0. This version is the result of another bugs triage on KDE bugzilla where more than 20 files have been closed. Thanks to Maik Qualmann who maintain KDE4 version.

This release will be the last stable release dedicated from 4.x series. We are now focused on next 5.0.0 release planed on spring 2016. This next main version will support Qt5 and KF5. The first beta1 will be released soon.

Geofix is a simple Python script that lets you use an Android device to record the geographical coordinates of your current position. The clever part is that the script stores the obtained latitude and longitude values in the digiKam-compatible format, so you can copy the saved coordinates and use them to geotag photos in digiKam's Geo-location module.

digiKam at CeBIT 2015

The Computec Media publishing company had kindly invited yours truly to this year's CeBIT trade show in Hannover to give a talk on a digiKam-related topic at the Open Source Forum. The talk entitled Digital Assets Management with digiKam is available for your perusal on my Scribbles and Snaps blog. I also had the pleasure of presenting the Readers' Choice award at the Linux Media Awards ceremony. And I was particularly happy to do that, since the award for the best open source photo management application went to digiKam. Unfortunately, none of digiKam's developers could make it to CeBIT to accept the award, but I'll deliver it to them when the opportunity presents itself.

As you may recall, I recently switched to GitBook.io as my primary publishing platform. Alas, my GitBook.io experiment didn't last long. Everything worked smoothly until I encountered a rather serious issue: for some reason, EPUB, MOBI, and PDF files generated by the service didn't include any images. I duly submitted a bug report and tried to contact the developers via Twitter, but I got no response.

This is not the end of the world, of course, but it's a good reason to find a better and more reliable alternative. I did some research, considered the available options, and decided to go the DIY way. Continue to read

The digiKam Team is proud to announce the release of digiKam Software Collection 4.4.0. This release includes some new features:

Slideshow support multi-monitors computer and use a new OSD widget. Users can also change Tags and Labels through keyboard shortcuts.
New keyboard shortcut to switch on/off color managed view for thumbnails and preview.
New keyboard shortcuts to improve usability while photo review (as to switch focus on text edit widget, or to toggle tags view). It's also possible to navigate between pictures using PageUp/PageDown while editing properties through captions/tags sidebar.

The face management feature has seen huge improvements and includes fixes for some problems introduced in recent releases.
The detection and recognition of faces is now more robust and suitable for production.
All icon views now have a new overlay to identify photos that have geo-location information, making it easier for users to search albums for photos with GPS coordinates.
The maximum thumbnail size is now 512 pixels, up from 256 pixels previously, improving their appearance on high-resolution displays.

Install the Latest Version of digiKam on Debian

There are plenty of reasons to choose Debian, but having the most recent versions of your favorite applications is not one of them. Software updates trickle down to the stable version of Debian very slowly, which means that packages in the distro's repositories are likely to be a few versions behind the current releases. digiKam is no exception: the Debian stable repositories contain a version of digiKam which can be considered outdated. However, if you don't mind the risk of making the Debian system unstable, or even breaking it altogether, you can opt to upgrade the distro to unstable and then install the latest version of digiKam from the experimental repositories.Continue to read

Apply EXIF Metadata to Multiple Photos in digiKam

If you happen to use digiKam for managing photos scanned from negatives, you'll appreciate the application's capabilities to add and edit EXIF metadata. Using digiKam's dedicated interface for managing metadata, you can add key EXIF values, such as maker, device model, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focal length, etc., to the scanned photos (provided you have these data handy).

However, digiKam doesn't allow you to apply the same EXIF data to multiple photos in a single operation.

At long last I am pleased to announce the simultaneous release of digiKam 3.0.0 and 3.1.0 for Windows built against KDE 4.10.2. If you have a short attention span and want to download it immediately see the attached link.

There were numerous bugs I had to fix in digiKam and KDE before release, and fixing them took more time than expected. Extremely sorry for the delay! Rest assured, it was worth it thanks to a major enhancement on the Windows side of things: a new 'solid' interface thanks to the KDE windows team which will drastically speed up time before album display when switching between albums and when viewing digiKam after some minutes away.

Bugs are inevitable in complex software, and digiKam is no exception. So what should you do when you've discovered a bug in your favorite photo management application? As a non-programmer, the best thing you can do is to file the bug with the KDE bug tracking system (digiKam is managed as part of the KDE project). digiKam Software Collection 3.1.0 is out...

Dear all digiKam fans and users!

After one month since 3.0.0 release, digiKam team is proud to announce the digiKam Software Collection 3.1.0, as bug-fixes release. digiKam 3.x versions include GoSC 2012 projects listed here.

With this release several internal patches have been applied to increase source code stability. digiKam team has used Coverity SCAN tool to parse whole implementation and fix in-deep bugs. Also, MAC-OSX support have been improved and crashes under this platform have been hacked.

Basic RAW Processing in digiKam

For this project, we'll use a photo of the famous Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona, Spain. The photo was taken with a Canon PowerShot S90 camera, and the RAW file exhibits several obvious flaws, including visible barrel distortion, underexposed areas, and noise. In other words, this particular RAW file is perfect for tweaking in digiKam.

Export Photos from digiKam via DLNA

Need to quickly push photos in digiKam to a device on the same network? Provided the device supports DLNA, you can do this using the DLNAExport Kipi plugin. Choose Export ? Export via DLNA to open the DLNA Export wizard. From the Choose the implementation drop-down list, select either HUPnP API or miniDLNA. Both options have their advantages and drawbacks.

Geotag Photos with Android Camera and digiKam

Thanks to digiKam's geocorrelation capabilities, you can geotag photos using a GPX file created with apps like Open GPS Tracker. But there is also another way to use your Android device for geotagging. The built-in camera app of most Android devices is capable of geotagging photos. This means that you can take a geotagged snap with the Android camera and then transfer geographical coordinates from it to other photos using digiKam. So next time, when you are done shooting with your main camera, remember to take a reference snapshot with your Android device (make sure that the geotagging option is enabled).

Soft proofing is a technique which allows you to see what the photo will look like when printed using a specific printer and photo media (paper, canvas, etc.) without actually printing the photo. Many professional photo processing applications support soft proofing, and digiKam is no exception.

To make this feature work in digiKam, you need to specify color profiles for your display and the output device (e.g., printer). But before you do that, you need to obtain the ICC color profile for your specific printer and print media.

Versioning in digiKam provides an excellent mechanism for non-destructive editing, but it does have a tiny quirk that can be a bit confusing if you are not aware of it.

With the Versioning feature enabled, digiKam automatically displays only the most recent version of a photo and hides all the previous revisions, including the original file. One of digiKam’s lesser known features is the ability to link scripts to notifications. At first sight, this may seem like a rather obscure functionality, but it can be put to some clever uses. Say, you want to keep a portfolio of selected photos on a mobile device. Resizing multiple photos to a specified size to make it easier to view them on the mobile device and transferring the processed photos from digiKam to the mobile device manually is not very practical. And this is where the ability to trigger scripts via notifications can come in handy. You can attach a simple Bash script to the Batch queue completed notification, so it’s triggered automatically when the Batch Queue Manager tool is done processing photos.

In addition to writing tags, ratings, labels, descriptions, etc. directly into the photos, version 2.0 of digiKam can save metadata in a separate .xmp file. This approach has several advantages. First off, it speeds things up, as writing data to a text file is faster than embedding metadata into photos. digiKam usually does a decent job of decoding RAW files using the default settings. But if you prefer to have complete control of how the application processes RAW files, choose Settings » Configure digiKam, switch to the RAW Decoding section, and enable the Always open the Raw Import Tool to customize settings option. Thanks to the marvelous job of our KDE sysadmins, digiKam is another project to join the git repository. All the code (digiKam, kipi-plugins) that lived in the SVN is no more accessible through SVN and all is part of git now. DigiKam and its dependencies live in several repos, but thanks to Marcel Wiesweg, you can use a nice small script, that will get you going:

1) Edit your ~/.gitconfig as given in
http://community.kde.org/Sysadmin/GitFAQ#Let_Git_rewrite_URL_prefixes
2) git clone http://anongit.kde.org/digikam-software-compilation digikam-sc

GSoC: How is digiKam's non-destructive editing? (This time with pictures!)

Hi everybody,

long time no blogging. Time to fix this bug.

So...without any long prologues - (hold your breath now) - it's working! (Say WOW™). But how well does it work you ask? Pretty good! Ok ok, let's get some overview.

You open some image in digiKam's image editor, you add some filters, do some transformations, use some color-altering-stuff untill you're satisfied with your creativity. Then you simply close the editor, autosaving kicks in, and bam, you have new version of your original image, which stayed completely untouched. Available versions can be then viewed/switched in the new sidebar widget (see pic below). The sidebar allows you to display all the available versions either as a simple list or as a tree, which is basically the same list with padded entries to reflect the relations between the images. Later it will also be possible to do some file operations in the sidebar, like Copy/Move/Remove etc. In the main view with thumbnails, (sub)versions are now marked by an (ugly) icon as you can see in the screenshot below, but I'm looking forward to hear your ideas about how to mark them in some better way (of course it will be on/off switchable). Let us hear your ideas or see your mockups!

I'm very happy to announce you that the reverse geotagging widget is finished! This was the first part and maybe the most important part of my project in this year Google Summer of Code, so I'm glad to see it working. The reverse geotagging widget will be included in kipi-plugins 2.0 release which should be around december 2010. Also, I would like to mention that the world map, the image list and the other widgets(except Reverse Geotagging widget of course) from Geolocation widget are the work of Michael G. Hansen(my GSoC mentor).

few days ago I blogged about the progress of non-destructive editing in digiKam. According to your comments, I take it that there is some misunderstaning in the whole concept. So let me explain it to you :)

The non-destructive editing will be done in such way, that if (and only if) you do some edit to some image, there is automatically created new file, which is a copy of the original with applied changes and with list of edits you've made saved in metadata. Next edit you do, is again applied to the same already-created version and the list of edits in metadata is updated. This is done for example for you to be able to edit the edited file with some external app, let's say GIMP. If there would be only the list of edits stored somewhere, you wouldn't be able to edit it with nothing else until you'd export it from digiKam.

Hi all,

little update about the progress that has been made. So far, there are no visible changes to the user yet (if you don't count tons of new debug stuff on console), all work has been done under the hood. The good news is, that the basics for non-destructive editing has already landed in the codebase. You can now use Brightness/Contrast/Gamma tool and the Autolevels tool in such way, that it will automatically create new version of the edited image, apply the changes on the new version, move the original version to "Originals" folder located in original image's path (will be fully configurable) and save the new version as {originalImageName}_v1.{originalImageFormatExtension}.

Last summer I saw bug #127321 an thought, this can be done by me (partly at least).
After some (successful) prototypic implementation, most of the time where spent into smooth integration in the existing
project:

adding a solution for migrating from SQLite to MySQL and vice versa
add possibiliy to start an own database server
and bug fixing...

Because only a few persons trying out this work (which resides atm. in a dedicated branch), the most bugs are possible undiscovered.

Few months earlier I started to work on HTMLExport plugin and first two updates I made are mentioned in the TODO file or request on bugzilla.
The first one is showing template preview alongside theme description as shown in the next screenshot:

The second one is getting metadata from image files during the album creation, using XSLT for the theming mechanism is really powerful, but in the last version the amount of information included in gallery.xml is very limited - now you can access much more information, look at THEME_HOWTO file for a detailed list. There is also a new detailed theme to test this featured, an example on the next screenshot.

trunk: an export to Piwigo plugin!

Some of you may not know Piwigo yet: it's a powerful web gallery based
on usual PHP/MySQL technologies. It's a good solution if you want to
self-host your photos and avoid third-parties services like Picasa or
Flickr. It can be compared to Menalto Gallery, which is already
supported by Kipi-plugins, even if I find Piwigo lighter and more

Porting to Qt4 and its model view concept - testers needed

During the last two months Marcel and I ported all tree views in digiKam from Qt3 to Qt4 and its model view concept. These changes are now included in the svn trunk. The new code still needs some serious testing and we would appreciate your help on this.

Some parts of the current digiKam release still rely on old Qt3 support classes. Most prominent are the various tree views in the main view, e.g. for selecting an album to show in the central icon view or filtering by tag. My job since the coding sprint was to port these tree views to Qt4 using the model view concept introduced there. Marcel already wrote the models some time ago so that I could start my work on a solid foundation. This work was done in a separate feature branch for the last two months. Accordingly with KDE bugzilla entries #177827 and #218906, i have slightly modified the vignetting tool, now you can add vignetting to your pictures:

Vignetting can be used as a creative tool to focus attention to the center of the picture.

This feature will be included in digiKam 1.1.0. I hope you will like it. Please provide feedback !

Some users have asked me what modifiers are. They don't seem to know this concept in a renaming tool and are a little bit confused by it.
I will try to explain what the modifiers do and why I implemented the renaming tool in such a way.

Update: Error Handling

Wrongly placed modifiers are highlighted now, so you can easily see if you made a mistake. A modifier is invalid when it is not added directly behind an option or an option-modifier pair.

I'm currently working on a new tool for Image Editor and Batch Queue Manager to perform camera sensor noise using Wavelets. The tool works into YCrCB color space and support 16 bits color depth.

The tool core code is based on Gimp Wavelets De-noise tool. I ported code to C++/Qt4 and fixed some memory management bugs and improved a little bit the processing loop to be be faster.

New renaming tool for digiKam

In the past renaming images in digiKam was not very powerful. Most users (me too) renamed their images with KRename, a quite powerful batch renamer. But calling KRename from the "Open With..." dialog in digiKam was not very intuitive, it just felt wrong.

digiKam can manage nearly every piece of information found in an image, therefore it would be nice to have all this information available for file renaming, too, since renaming is one of the basic managing tasks.
Sure there is a KIPI plugin for batch renaming, but this plugin is not very powerful and has no access to the digiKam database.

Outstanding work this week was done on:

First visible effect of porting to Qt4 model list view: overlays over image thumbnails. When hovering with mouse over "plate" user will see small icons for loss-less rotating of image, rating, selection and probably more in future. Icons are faded in and out with nice looking animation, also rating widget interaction was improved.

A few weeks ago I added a new feature to the Free-Rotation imageplugin: 'Automatic (Horizon) Correction'.

This is nothing new, Gimp and Photoshop (and for sure other applications) have such a feature, too.
You set two points in the preview widget and hit "Adjust" to rotate the image accordingly to these markers.

This week, i have work for a while on another digiKam subject: a new first run assistant.

The goal of this assistant is to group lead questions to configure some importants rules in digiKam setup. Of course, we won't to reproduce here the huge digiKam setup panel, but welcome users in digiKam and ask for minimal settings.

Assistant provide tips and explainations to guide users for future adjustements. Also, we cannot replace digiKam documentation which can be compared to a real book, but at least users are introduced to the digiKam world.

Because KDE-wide commit digest is a bit erratic lately I thought about replacing
it in part of KDE I am especially interested in: digiKam.

It covers development of digiKam, kipi-plugins, libkdcraw and libkexiv2.

Since some of code is shared in KDE framework it may be interesting also for users of other programs but it will be centered around digiKam and any editorial comments will be digiKam-centric.

Since few weeks, an active work have been done with Julien Pontabry and Julien Nardoux to solve this bug report.

On preview screenshots, you can seen a picture resized horizontally to 150%. A preservation mask in green is drawn over the image part to not touch elements during transformation. see below, another example with two area to preserve:

Since first beta releases of digiKam and kipi-plugins for KDE4, i receive a lots of mails about to know where are all Batch kipi-plugins... as batch converter, batch resize, etc... In fact these tools will never ported to KDE4 ... by me...

KDE4 Port of kipi-plugins include only 3 batch tools: Raw converter, DNG converter, and Remove Red Eyes. Why not to port all others batch tools ? Because they are limited in usability: you can only process one action on images at the same time, and require a lots of interactions from user. We need something better where more than one action can be processed at the same time...

The last KDE4 release candidate of digiKam plugins box is out.

With this new release, Face tool is now able to import pictures from FaceBook web service to your computer.

Since rc1, a new plugin named Smug is dedicated to export/import images to/from SmugMug web service.

A plugin is available to batch convert RAW camera images to Adobe DNG container (see this Wikipedia entry for details). To be able to compile this plugin, you need last libkdcraw from svn trunk (will be released with KDE 4.2). To extract libraries source code from svn, look at this page for details.

Since few days, team works on KDE bugzilla to clean bugs database before to release digiKam 0.10.0-beta7 for KDE4 and digiKam 0.9.5-beta2 for KDE3.

More than 30 files have been closed in 3 days, and less than one quarter of all files have been parsed. Note than digiKam and DigikamImagePlugins component in bugzilla counts around 500 entries.

Some years ago, we had an addition to our family and I took a lot of photos in that time. During the months I had taken nearly 2000 images of the newborn, but most of them had red-eyes on it.
This happens quite a lot with little children since their pupils don't close that fast and the light of the camera flash is reflected by the eye.

digiKam event: KDE Imaging coding sprint planed...

For a long time, many people asked me to implement a RAW camera image converter to Digital NeGative (DNG). Why should one support DNG under Linux? 3 weeks ago, i have received a mail from a contributor named Holger Berger. He send me a patch against dcraw implementation included in libkdcraw, to parallelize demosaicing operations using OpenMP library. After some tests on my dual core computer i have immediately felt the power of parallelized code: it's faster.

We have tried to contact Dave Coffin to include this patch officially in dcraw... without success (no response). Why ? He don't like OpenMp certainly... So we have looked for another way to use this patch.

digiKam Image Editor Usability Improvements... (screencast)

I am currently working with Andi Clemens to improve some important usability issues in Image Editor and Showfoto.

In April, Risto Saukonpää, the designer (and photographer) who re-designed digikam.org website and digiKam logo (updates coming about those) provided a great mockup and ideas for Showfoto how to speed-up workflow during image editing.

Well, i'm happy to say that work is in progress in KDE3 branch. I have written a new API for editor named Editor Tool and it will be used for all image plugins. The goal is to remove all independent plugin dialogs and have them as embedded plugins on editor window itself. Preview is stacked over canvas and settings placed as a dedicated tab in right sidebar. The API will plug and unplug all tools automaticlally when changing between them.

There is one year, Marcel and me we have started to port digiKam code to Qt4/KDE4. Yes, already one year of work...Tempus fugit...

Helped by Laurent Montel, code have been ported progresivly. This have take a while because digiKam code is huge and API changes are enormous. This is a complex task to do it : porting to new api, make regression tests, fix new bugs, an validate new code... Also, when bugs come from KDE4 or Qt4 shared libs, the puzzle become infernal to solve. Laurent, as KDE core developper, has reported all problems discovered with digiKam port. He have make an important role during this time

Since few weeks ago, the whole web site have been re-designed. The following task have been done:

Gerhard Kulzer has migrated site CMS from Drupal 4.x to 6.x.
All logo, page layouts, and graphisms have been made by Risto Saukonpää.
Gerhard has installed Captcha module to be able to post comments without to use account.
All screenshots have been updated with KDE4 release (incoming digiKam 0.10.0).
New Tour Movies section have been added with ogf and flash video.
All screenshots are now hosted to Flickr photo-set.
All videos are now hosted to YouTube channel.

Still to do more video demo and screeshots of new KDE4 version of digiKam in action. A new page to describe the new features of digiKam 0.10.0 must be done too.

One month ago, with Marcel, we have worked on a new sets of Search Tools in digiKam for KDE4, called Fuzzy Search

During my digiKam presentation at LGM2008 i have introduced the concept to be able to search duplicates items around the whole collection of photos. But the concept is not just limited to find the similars photos by using copy, it even allows user to drawn a sketch of photo what user memories and shows photos what has similar shapes and colors as on sketch.

digiKam for KDE4 will become with another important tool for photograph: lens distorsions auto-correction. The plugin have been created by Adrian Schroeter from OpenSuse team.

This tool have been implemented as a new image editor plugin. It use LensFun shared library witch provide a database of lens settings to fix optical distorsions automatically. The tool use picture metadata to find the right settings to apply (Exif and Makernotes). You can adjust yourself all parameters if you need.

After to have improved the geo-location view from right sidebar in digiKam for KDE4, following this blog entry, the story continue with a new powerfull search tool based on Marble Widget to be able to find pictures using a map.

The new digiKam search backend implemented by Marcel is already able to perform a search based on a rectangle area defined by GPS positions. Now, we need a suitable graphical interface for end users.

General :
1. Color theme scheme are pervasively applied in graphical interfaces, giving digiKam a real Pro-look when dark schemes are selected.
1a. Color theme scheme can be changed from either Editor or LightTable.
2. Updated internal CImg library to last stable 1.2.7 (released on 2008/01/23).
3. Add capability to display items count in all Album, Date, Tags, and Tags Filter folder views. The number of items contained in virtual or physical albums can be displayed next to its name. If a tree branch is collapsed, parent views sum-up the number of items from all undisplayed children views. Items count is performed in background by digiKam KIO-Slaves.
A new option from Setup/Album dialog page can toggle on/off this feature.

To find a new slogan, a new logo, iconized slash screen and web design has been itching me and others for quite a while now. But those are sensitive and difficult subjects, in particular for us amateurs in that field.

Since digiKam 0.9.3 is released, i working hard to a new major feature for digiKam 0.9.4 : a Time-Line to perform complex date search around whole image collection.

My first approach of Time-Line have been describe in this blog entry, including this tool in calendar view. This way been limited and unadapted because calendar view is not a Search view as well. To solve this problem, i have created a new left sidebar tab named “timeline”…

There is again a new very practical feature integrated:
In the Albums/Tags/Searches/TagsFilter sidebars the is a live filter at the
bottom that lets you search for a string in Albums/Tags/Searches/TagsFilter
hierarchy, much as amarok does it int he collections.

A word on stability. I know that many of you wait until a 'stable' sees the
day of light in order to upgrade digiKam. I will not tell you to do
otherwise. But! I update digikam daily per cron job from svn since 4 years
now. I have never lost a single image, nor have I lost the database or
metadata. And I have 35K images in the album. Bugs are generally functions
that don't work, but they are not destructive. Now do what you want :-)

New Features

The main window has yet another live filter: The new string search filters the current view (album/collection, date, tags, search) on substrings within file name, caption, and tags. This feature is really convenient and completes the file type filter and rating filter introduced in previous 0.9.3-betas.

For a long time now we have been planning to extend the amount of information we store in the database for the next version, 0.10, which will run on KDE4. As the database is the central storage and digikam is built around it, such a move involves deep structural changes. We have done preparations, discussed on the mailing list what we want and what we need, made up documentation, and then sat down to code.
So during the last weeks I have been working on implementing the new database schema, and tonight I have merged my commits.

The next stable release 0.9.3 of digiKam is planed to september. This version will includes few bug fix for KDE3 envirronement. For this release, we need 2 new splash-screens dedicaced to digiKam and Showfoto startup.

Note, than it will also the same about digiKam and Showfoto for KDE4 envirronement planed around december.

To resume, we need 4 color or black and white pictures, taken horizontally. We need only photos, no need to put few marks about program name and version. We have a template to do it later. See below the official 0.9.2 splash-screen as exemple:

Some minor regression bugs led us to another release, the 0.9.2-beta3 release including an improved light table (full size images). The 0.9.2 final release is on track for mid June publishing. This beta3 version is rock-solid, don't hesitate to use it for production.

In order to make digiKam 0.9.2-beta3 compile you need to compile and install libkexiv2 and libkdcraw first (unless you complied them for beta[1,2] already).

After 8 days of intensive work, I'm very proud to announce the first LibKdcraw shared library 0.1.0 beta release.

LibKdcraw is a C++ interface around a dcraw binary program used to decode RAW picture files. This library is actually used by kipi-plugins (trunk), and later on by digiKam (with future 0.9.2 release). A RAWConverter screenshot can be seen at this url

Here we go again: another step beyond on the path to the first stable release of the 0.9 series for digiKam and digikamImagePlugins.

We are pleased to announce digiKam 0.8.1. This version brings raw support, new icons, image rating, printing enhancements and in the meanwhile we also

You are now able to rate your images from 1 start to 5 stars. In the search part of digiKam, you can search for images with a certain rating.
A new theme has been added, the 'Dessert' theme.

The new digikam image library DImg now supports ICC profiles using littlecms. littlecms is an open source color management engine which is used by krita as well and installed by default on most linux distributions. It was added by the new digiKam contributor Paco.

We will add a dedicated ICC profile setup page to the configuration dialog and a new image plugin to apply ICC profiles manually later.

This guide has been tested for Ubuntu 11.04.

It has been verified that this is not going to work, if you are
using Ubuntu prior to 11.04, due to inavailability of some
required dependencies.
