We’re not here to get rich; if that was the case, we’d go into investment banking or found a startup with missing vowels in the name. No, we’re here because we love helping people achieve their goals. We know it’s not our clients’ jobs to be tech-savvy like we are, and that’s cool: we recognize that our clients bring their own insight and expertise. We respect your perspective, and respect the constraints — time, budget, etc. — you work within.
We prefer lasting relationships with our clients over one-off, “fire and forget” work (which isn’t to say we won’t do one-offs, mind you). We’re more interested in clients who are looking to build long-term relationships with their customers and constituents and can see the big picture; sometimes it takes a little more investment up front to craft more flexible, future-friendly websites.
We’re a small team, and each of us has our own values and needs. We’re interested in working with clients who treat us as equal partners, not just the “hired help.” We’re not interested in working with organizations and causes whose values and goals conflict with our own beliefs (sorry, Tea Partiers). While the success of our clients is incredibly important to us, so are our families, and we aim to maintain a healthy work/life balance that keeps us energized and happy with our jobs.
We work to ensure that we’re doing everything the right way, from how we bill our clients to how we write our code to how we credit others whose work we rely and build upon. It’s about giving back to the communities we draw upon, and leaving the world (wide web) a better place than we found it.
We identify with and respect the folks who use the sites we build, and we aim to create services and experiences that make sense to them. It’s not that sites need to be simple and engaging because people are dumb or don’t care; it’s that we’re all busy and have a legitimate expectation that things be easy to use. We acknowledge the realities of what users want and need, and fine-tune our work until it makes our clients (and their clients!) happy and engaged.
At the end of the day, we strive to do work that’s really, really good and that we can be proud of. It’s not just about being “good enough” that our clients are satisfied — it’s about taking care of the little extra things and subtle details that make a big difference in how successful a project is, whether before, during, or after it’s done.
With 15 years’ experience, Ira has become an expert in nonprofit online communications and online fundraising. Working with hundreds of organizations, Ira has managed and executed many web projects that have resulted in increased funds and resounding engagement.
Ira’s core responsibilities are to ensure that projects are completed on time and within budget, and to provide our clients with the best possible final product. Ira also manages all of our strategic engagements and helps guide nonprofits to determine their long-term strategy goals for online communications.
Prior to founding Cornershop, Ira was the Senior Project Manager at Firefly Partners, where he managed online projects including website design/builds, CRM deployments, and online strategic planning. Ira also served as the Online Organizer for Free Press, where he executed online campaigns that were awarded the 2007 People’s Choice Webby Award for Best Activism Website and the 2008 Convio Innovator Award for Best Advocacy Campaign. Ira has also previously served at American Jewish World Service, Fund for Public Interest, and Grassroots Campaigns, Inc.
Ira resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan with his wife, son, daughter, and two awesome cats.
Lesley has been working on the web since she was in high school and ran her own small web design shop before she could drive. Prior to founding Cornershop Creative, she served as Web Manager for Albuquerque Public Schools — one of the largest school districts in the nation — where she oversaw the main district site, 62 department sites, and 140 individual school sites.
Lesley has extensive experience performing user testing and usability studies, rewriting and improving complex language to appeal to a wide variety of audiences, and helping organizations adopt the right technologies to achieve their goals. Her heart really belongs to nonprofits and small businesses, where she can see the tangible benefits of a healthy web presence: donations, connections, engagements, and sales.
Lesley earned an English degree and an Executive MBA from the University of New Mexico. In 2012, she and her family began a new life in Grenoble, France, where her husband is pursuing a Ph.D. in Business Strategy. Lesley’s location allows Cornershop Creative to work virtually around the clock!
Ben has a BFA in Graphic Design from Iowa State University and has been designing professionally for about 20 years. In order to found Cornershop Creative, Ben left his position as Senior Front-end Developer for New Signature, where his extensive experience with languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript were put to good use implementing his designs on several CMS platforms, including WordPress and Drupal.
Prior to joining New Signature, Ben worked as the lead graphic designer and web developer for Firefly Partners. Before that he was at Free Press, where he rolled his own CMS in addition to designing countless brands, brochures, and websites (one of which garnered a “People’s Choice” Webby award).
He has presented on the difference between print and web design, web typography, WordPress widgets, high performance front-end performance optimization and other topics at various organizations and events. Ben lives in Santa Rosa, California with his wife, two kids, and labradoodle Barcelona.
Nick’s love for the web started early, when he built his first web pages for fun in middle school. Since then, he’s studied graphic design, digital media, and web technology, and has worked in both freelance and in-house development positions. His passion has always led him to the web. We’re proud that he’s Cornershop’s first full-time employee.
Nick is a great team player who likes the idea of people using their unique talents and skills to help others. His talents and skills include his customer focus, his tenacity, and his breadth of knowledge in a variety of web languages, including PHP, jQuery, CSS, and JavaScript. He enjoys customizing WordPress custom fields, post types and taxonomies to supercharge the CMS.
Nick lives just outside beautiful Albuquerque, New Mexico with his wife, son, and two dogs.
Monica has been working in strategic communications, online & social media campaigning, and fundraising for more than a decade. After earning a law degree from Lewis & Clark, she become an advocate for environmental health and justice, gravitating towards e-advocacy.
Before joining Cornershop Creative, Monica spent seven years as a climate organizer and creative director for the Ecology Center. While there, she mobilized health professionals to speak out against new coal plant proposals, developed and maintained the market-based campaign site HealthyStuff.org, and organized community members to take action on climate change. She has organized everything from green home bike tours and garden challenges to brand and website redesigns.
Monica currently lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan with her husband and two wacky dogs.
Chris Harmoney began coding in elementary school and has been telling computers what to do ever since. After completing a BA in Economics at Washington State University, he went on to receive a graduate certification in Systems Engineering for Software Intensive Systems from Carnegie Mellon, and is currently pursuing a Masters in Computer Science from Georgia Tech.
Chris worked for Boeing for over 10 years, starting as a student intern, and staying on as an analyst, programmer, and security advisor. Developing and supporting an eclectic collection of enterprise web and mainframe applications exposed him to an alphabet soup of languages and technologies. Since joining Cornershop Creative as the senior backend developer, Chris focuses on architecting and developing CMS and CRM solutions that snugly fit client’s needs and budgets. When the opportunity arises, he delights in integrating new products and vendors into established processes.
Chris believes in the power of the Internet to help organizations succeed in their missions. He’s a vocal fan of the EFF, and shares that organization’s passion for internet advocacy. Chris, his wife, and his two cats currently live in Iowa City, IA.
De’Yonté’s a late-80s baby who found his passion for web design and development during MySpace’s hey day, when he helped his friends create awesome profiles. From there, he studied New Media and Computer Science at Salisbury University, and spent three years at a digital marketing firm, specializing in WordPress and conversion optimization before joining Cornershop as frontend developer.
In his off time he enjoys cooking and learning new skills. He also speaks fluent english and broken french (Franglais). He lives in Crofton, MD with his wife where they enjoy spending time outdoors and hanging out with family.
Chelsea’s passion for quality communication, authentic relationships, and creative nerds inspires her work, and her hyper-particular organizational talents serve her well in her work as a project manager.
Prior to joining Cornershop, Chelsea spent nine years learning how to embrace technology, even though she grew up kind of hating it. Her appreciation for progressive nonprofits and social change led her to Salsa Labs where she worked in technical support, product development and marketing before joining the Cornershop team in 2015.
Chelsea has degrees in music and sociology, which were really important when her main goal was to become rock star. One of these days, she’ll live closer to real internet, but for now, she tolerates two cats with her husband and two kids at the end of a dead-end gravel road in Wisconsin.
Bethany is a former nonprofit fundraiser who didn’t like asking people for money. She transitioned out of fundraising and into nonprofit tech as the head of training & implementation for NeonCRM, where she helped nonprofits move their data and processes to a new database. Bethany loves spreadsheets and is passionate about helping nonprofits work toward their missions through well-managed technology.
She is a born-and-raised yinzer and talks about Pittsburgh every chance she gets.
Tracy loves solving problems creatively, and her overlap of skills in design, user experience, strategy, front-end development, photography, video, and traditional art help her not only think outside the box, but to stay miles away from the box altogether! With over 20 years of web development experience, and over 15 years of client work under her belt, Tracy approaches design very strategically, thinking from all angles to ensure a consistent and effective creative solution… not just something that “looks pretty.”
Before joining Cornershop, she spent over 7 years building up her own successful creative agency, working on projects of all sizes, from startups and small businesses to giant corporations, but she was always drawn to organizations and non-profits that share her passion for improving the world. Tracy has spoken internationally at conferences, lead workshops ,and taught at the college level on design, web development, technology, and communication strategy.
When she’s not busy solving creative puzzles, you’ll either find Tracy playing the drums, lifting heavy things in CrossFit, or traveling. And she’ll most likely be wearing a bowtie, because bowties are cool. Tracy lives in Brown Deer, WI with her partner, a cat named moe (@moethecat on twitter) and a dog named canım (a turkish word of endearment, equivalent to “sweetheart” or “dear”). And yes, her last name really is Apps!
Kenji has been designing and programming since middle school, where he got his start teaching sacred geometry to pixelated turtles, but quickly moved toward creating websites. In retrospect, this was a highly practical decision.
In the past, Kenji has built sites for schools, startups, and multinational corporations. As a web developer with Cornershop, he’s able to indulge his fascination with technological systems while helping organizations connect with the audiences they deserve. He’s a great believer in WordPress and its focus on user experience for site administrators as well as visitors, and brings that philosophy to his own work in plugin and theme development.
In his spare moments he negotiates a fragile detente between a lovely beautiful cat, Roswell SpookMagnet, and a lovely beautiful psychotic dog, Sister Cujo Kitsune; and tries, in various ways, to make the world a less hostile place for all its residents.
Jen never knew that she wanted to be a web developer, she only knew that her Xanga blog needed a new music-themed template every week of her middle school career. Despite years of building websites for herself and others, Jen pursued a degree in marketing, and later an MBA in entrepreneurship, all the while hoping to work with non-profit organizations someday.
While formally studying topics like Business and Society and Data Driven Decision Making, Jen worked for the University of New Mexico’s Anderson School of Management’s web development team. As part of that team, Jen was responsible for learning the needs of various university groups and meeting those needs with custom web solutions. She also interned for two years at Sandia National Labs, learning WordPress, before coming to Cornershop.
Though originally from the East Coast, Jen currently lives in the high deserts of New Mexico with her partner, Trevor, and their three – very large – rescue dogs. When not behind a computer, you will find Jen riding her Schwinn Streamliner or with a camera in hand.
Danny’s path to web development started when he enrolled in the Art Institute of New York City. In the six short years since receiving his AOS in Web Design & Interactive Media, he’s built up an impressive list of experience in WordPress development, Javascript animation libraries, and online advertising.
While Danny is always looking for a way to make his sites more cutting-edge and interactive, he’s passionate about functionality and user-friendliness. So although motion and video really speak to Danny, he’s always keeping an eye on seamless integrations, future-friendliness, and usability.
Danny lives in near New York City in West Orange, New Jersey, with his girlfriend. When he’s not working, he can be found making music, or riding his sports bike.
Self-described as a “non-profit junkie,” Sarah has dedicated her career to serving the needs of the non-profit sector. Her project management experience spans a variety of non-profit management disciplines including strategic planning, community engagement, capacity building, fundraising and research. She has worked both in and for the non-profit sector at the Feminist Majority Foundation, the Sadie Nash Leadership Project, and the consulting firms The Lee Institute and The Curtis Group. With her ever expanding non-profit tool belt, Sarah joined Cornershop Creative to tap into her techie, creative side, while developing meaningful partnerships with her clients to help them more effectively achieve their goals.
Along with her extensive training in facilitation, Sarah is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati DAAP School where she received a dual bachelors degree in Women’s and Urban Studies, as well as Wake Forest University School of Business’s Nonprofit Management Certification Program. Passionate about civic engagement, Sarah is currently a member of the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center’s Aquarium Connection and the Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, where she serves on the board as the Strategic Planning Director.
Sarah and her husband, Bryce, live in Norfolk, VA on the banks of the Chesapeake Bay where she moonlights as a mermaid and raises their pack of three dogs (Daisy, Rico and Mokona) and sole cat (Nestle).
