Nature notes
Greylag geese are now wintering on estuaries and marshes in south and east Scotland and northern England. They have come here from Iceland, mostly in family groups. Mixed with them are some of the relatively small number that regularly nest in Scotland, generally beside water, sometimes out in the heather. They are the geese from which most domestic geese are descended and are mighty birds, streaky dark brown and with an orange beak. They have to run a long way before they can take off, when they reveal large white patches on their wings. They feed mainly on grass, head always down, out in meadows and pastures. However, they can also be seen in many other parts of England, resting beside flooded gravel pits or flying over farms with loud honking calls. These are feral birds that have become more common of late. “Lag” is an old word for goose, so their name absurdly means “greygoose geese”.
