About me

Bio
How did my journey begin? I was born on the Belgian coast near Bruges, the youngest of three children, and always seemed to approach things my own way. I wrote my name and other words not just backwards but as an exact mirror image of what the letters should be. I was left-handed but taught to write "right" so I'm now oddly ambidextrous.
From an early age, I immersed myself in drawing, and love of illustration remains a hallmark of my work. Growing up, my family spent many holidays in France, including skiing in the French Alps. Belgium is a small, beautiful country in the heart of Europe, and while I feel distinctly and proudly Belgian, I also love Swiss typography and graphic design and have always been intrigued by the richness of work from countries around me.
My career began in print, in 1992, focusing on logos, stationery, and brochures — and using the name Duoh! In 1995 I added website design, user interfaces for intranets, and multimedia development.
In 2000, I officially founded Duoh! n.v. (which later changed into b.v.b.a.) with Geert Leyseele. Partners in life and work, we live in Deinze, balancing each other. I love the things you'll find on this site, as well as house music, biking through the countryside, traveling to sunny beaches, and, of course, nourishing my friendships with the gifted and wonderful people around the world who I've met through the web.
I choose my projects based on how well I connect with a company. I've worked on everything from ExpressionEngine 2.0's GUI to wonderful creative projects for the Library of Congress to sites for a wealth of small and large businesses.
In 2003 I discovered web standards after seeing the CSS Zen Garden, and the work of Douglas Bowman. Once I hopped on board, I never looked back and became known for my tutorials promoting CSS through my personal journal. My dream is to be certain that I contribute in small but important ways to making the "interweb" a better place.
My work at Duoh!
My career has been rich with opportunities to envision, invent, and explore, as I've played with ideas and worked till the wee hours. Here's a taste of my work. As you can see, I delight in variety:
- Before its pre-launch in February 2011 (since Fabulis end of 2009) until September 2013, I've been Fab's Design Lead. I've designed the logo & house style for Fab, and also the initial and previous versions of the website, email newsletter template(s), iPhone & iPad app design (not the latest version).
- The Library of Congress: interactive history-oriented mini websites about America, created for children ages 9 to 13. An incredibly fun, challenging, and creative project called The Learning Page (1999 - 2003).
- Greenpeace: the website for their "Green My Apple" campaign
- EllisLab: the GUI for ExpressionEngine 2.0 (beta)
- LTE International Airways: icon logo for their airplanes
- Netvibes: the "Veerle" skin for their site
- Web Directions: Scroll Magazine logo, magazine, and website
- NetSquared: organization's logo and website

A lot of people misspell my name and I don't blame them. Even I was confused on how to spell my name. Spelling my ‘big‘ sister's name wasn't a problem, but mine? Well, no wonder, all those e's ! As for pronouncing, don't worry about it. As long as you don't pronounce it like 'virl' you are doing just fine ;)
(disclosure: I was only 4 years old when I drew/wrote this)
