Kim Kardashian’s Head and Other Things People Carry at Outside Lands to Find Their Friends

Kim Kardashian's head on a stick
Over my many years attending Outside Lands, my usual partner in crime (but not this year, sniff), Robyn, noticed something beyond the flower crowns, cropped tops and cut-offs. Hundreds of people were carrying stuffed animals, balloons, inflatable creatures and the like, perched on tall sticks. Why? So they could find their friends, just in case the cell towers were too jammed to get messages across. It turns out, not only do these clever folks help their own friends find them, but anyone standing nearby as well. “I’m just to the left of the poo!” A few of these fine folks let me snap their photos. I think my favorite has to be Kim with the electric red eyes. How about you?

How to Get the Most Out of San Francisco’s Outside Lands Music Festival

Outside Lands

I’ve been hauling myself to Outside Lands for at least 5 years now. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with it—I love the bands, the food, the venue, and the sheer joy of running around at an outdoor music festival like a kid. Things I don’t love: the parking, the confusing weather (even for SF natives!), sore feet, crazy crowds, trying to see three bands I love who are all playing at the same time, the utter exhaustion after day 2. So here are some tips that will mitigate the misery of Outside Lands and highlight the fun.

How To Be a Dirty Hippie Without Smelling Like One

camp collection teePhoto via Camp Collection

As I mentioned yesterday, I spent the weekend in the Russian River Valley at my friends’ new place. One thing I didn’t mention is that they’re working on the bathroom, so we couldn’t shower. Personally that’s perfectly fine with me, but I do prefer to not offend others if possible. And since I recently stopped using traditional deodorant (because of that thing where you can’t even scrub that stuff off in the shower??), it was a bit of a challenge. Turned out I had plenty of products on hand to stay relatively stink-free. So whether your camping, temporarily shower-less, or just lazy, here are some products that will prevent you from becoming friendless.

This Was the Best Scone I’ve Ever Eaten

We drove 30 minutes for scones, and I would happily have driven a few hours. Wild Flour Bread in Freestone, CA in Sonoma County is that good. We’ve made several trips to the Russian River Valley this summer because our awesome and generous friends bought a place in Monte Rio. It has been so much fun exploring the area. On Sunday morning we made our pilgrimage to this wood-fired bakery.

Welcome to Wild Flour
The amount of baked goods available, especially when you’re hungry and possibly a little bit hungover on a Sunday morning, is overwhelming. They have something called Fougasse, which is bread with potato, garlic, rosemary, jack cheddar and swiss cheese. The Bohemian has orange, apricot and pecans. The sticky bun is packed with currants, cinnamon and walnuts.

The bread was stacked high.
Everything except the scones comes loaf form, so be prepared to share or take some home. Even I, with my insatiable sweet tooth, couldn’t finish what we ordered:

What Will You Do With the Final 50 Days of Summer?

cover_d2
Hey everyone, it’s August 1! We have one more month of summer left until the kiddos (or you) start back to school. But I’m a cup half full kinda gal, so I’m going remind you that summer isn’t actually over until September 22, so that’s nearly a month of summer after the kids go back to school! Plus, we all know September is when summer just gets going in the San Francisco area. So that means 50+ more days full of opportunities to break out the brightly-colored beach accoutrements.

As I mentioned last week, I’m partnering with Serena & Lily, and co-hosted a trunk show at the brand’s San Francisco design shop on Wednesday with a group of lovely SF bloggers where we celebrated exactly those items. They are even prettier in person—I basically wanted everything. They’re available for a limited time only, and some are on sale. So make your way to the beautiful new Serena & Lily space at 3457 Sacramento Street or get shopping online! Click below for some of my favorites from the lifestyle collection.

So I Just Put My Age on Facebook

I was 6 in 1974.

I was 6 in 1974.

I’m 46. That might be even scarier to say than “I got fired.”

We all know age is often a closely guarded secret by women. “How old are you?” is considered to be a very rude question indeed. Why? Because America hates old people.

Just kidding. I don’t know why it’s so terrible to admit you’re past 30 or 40 or whatever. Even some of the strongest women in history (Frida Kahlo, for example) lied about their age. Is it just too awful to go public about losing your ability to reproduce? To realize we’ll never experience young love again? To face that our career is not where we’d like it to be and time is running out? Whoa, hopefully that’s just me because that shit is depressing.

BUT. I was at a blogger event last night, where Miss Savvy in San Fran (AKA Melissa) told me she’d just celebrated her 40th birthday, to which I responded: “Oh, the 40s have been the best decade of my life!” And it’s totally true. Partly because a lot of awesome things happened (adopting a baby, moving to the beach, strengthening my marriage). But also because I’m comfortable in my own skin for the first time ever.

Yes I wish I’d felt this OK with who I am at 25, but it’s been a long road. Here’s one thing that happened:

Seven Sparkling White (and Affordable) Pieces of Polished Beachy Jewlery

opal jewelry

When I spotted the image above from Planet Blue on Pinterest, I dreamt that was my hand, and that it was located on a tropical beach, deeply tanned (fake, of course), and lazily leafing through a summer novel. The rest of me is wearing perhaps this kaftan. You too? Well, you’re in luck because I went on a hunt for beachy white jewelry so you don’t have to.

Four Poisonous Facts About Your Style That Will Make You a Greener Shopper

A summer 2014 look from Amour Vert

A summer 2014 look from Amour Vert

As I mentioned on Instagram, I had the pleasure of interviewing Greta Eagan, author of a new book called Wear No Evil, at Amour Vert’s beautiful new boutique in SF’s Hayes Valley on Saturday. She was lovely, and knowledgeable on a topic I’ve always been interested in but often been lazy about: ecologically-responsible fashion. I sat down with her book when I got home and was shocked into caring again by these four facts:

Misery Is Ice Cream and a Carousel

Moments before she was "done."

Moments before she was “done.”

Yesterday we had a fun day planned for our little family. We would wake up early, take the BART train into the city, then catch a cable car to Pier 39 to see the sea lions. Simple enough, right? Not incredibly ambitious? LOL. Nothing is ever simple with a two year old.

The BART ride was great. Frida is obsessed with choo choos, so it was heaven for her. But when we arrived at Powell Station to take the cable car, the line wrapped around to infinity. There was no way she’d wait for this mass of humanity without incident. So we decided to walk to Pier 39, and take the cable car back. It wasn’t a bad walk! Great exercise, and to reward ourselves, we stopped in North Beach for a gelato. This is where the trouble started.
