Straight Bourbon Of The Month Latest Topics

Straight Bourbon Of The Month Latest Topics
  • Well, after a month hiatus, I'll try and get things back on track.    I have to admit I have yet to see, let alone try this one. Yet it intrigues me a little. Here's why.   My first taste(s) of bourbon was many, many years ago (early 1970's, and yes a little underage ) when I had no clue what bourbon even was. A few of my buddies and I would pool what little money we had, and get an older friend to buy us some whiskey.  He bought either Rebel Yell or Yellowstone. Needless to say, we had some good times.    My personal history with Rebel Yell aside, there's been a lot of discussion about it here lately, so I figured it would be a good BOTM.    Cheers and happy posting! Let's here it for Rebel Yell 10 yr old Single Barrel.    Joe

  • Trick Or Treat!  I'm on time for a change.   I saw this on sale for $19.99 a few weeks ago, so I bought a bottle. I figured what the heck. After trying it, and reading the thread about it, I thought I'd give it a go for this months BOTM.    I don't quite know what to make of Beam Double Oak. It seems to taste different every time I have a pour. One time it's dry with a heavy wood flavor and the Beam "funk" right up front. The next time it tastes better. A bit of the Beam "funk" is still there, but not quite so apparent. Nutty with, as others have said, vanilla and spice. Add a cube or two, and it's different yet. With some ice, it seems more earthy, with mint and a musty, grassy flavor almost reminiscent of BT from a few years back. A different bird for sure. It's a tweener for me. I don't love it, but I don't hate it either. It's decent enough, but I doubt I'll buy another bottle. One real positive for me at least. Like I posted in the regular thread about Beam Double Oak, I really do like the new bottle.    Cheers and happy posting!   Joe

  • Howdy y'all. I know I'm late by a couple of days, but I did come up with a BOTM. I'd been contemplating a BOTM for the last couple of weeks or so. I had a couple in mind, but had my reservations about those. I even thought about skipping a BOTM this time around. But…...   I decided to open a bottle today. I've been extremely busy with a lot of things recently, so I decided to treat myself to something a little out of the ordinary. Besides, I only had four bottles open. I reached in the back of my cabinet and pulled out an old label/bottle of ORVW 10/107. I opened my bottle of ORVW 10/107 today and had a couple of pours while slaving in the kitchen over my first batch of chill for this season. Then it hit me. I had this month's BOTM.     For once I have some things to say. I like ORVW 10/107. It's one of my favorite bourbons. I've had many bottles over the last number of years, and I never had a bad one. I finished a new bottle a couple of weeks ago, and as I said, I just opened an old label. While I perceived a difference in the two, it was minimal. The newer bottle seemed a bit richer and sweeter. The old bottle I just opened has just a little more depth of character to it, for lack of a better term. It seems to have a tad more "oomph" to it. Unlike the wheater it is, there's a nice, slightly spicy edge to it. To me, the old bottle drinks like it's 107 proof, while the newer bottle belies it's proof somewhat.   Just a couple more things. I still remember the first bottle of ORVW 10/107 I bought. I found it while on vacation in Florida. My buddy and I, okay, well mostly me, finished it off mid week. Of course I went back and bought another to bring home with me. (pics below) And finally, IMHO, I believe that ORVW 10/107 has probably been the most consistent of the Van Winkle bourbons over the years. There's been times that after tasting them, I turned down Pappy 15 & 20 and LotB, and bought ORVW 10/107 instead. Just my thought. YMMV.   Cheers and happy posting! Joe   About the pics. I thought it would be kinda interesting to make it seem like we found the bottle on the table by the pool with a note inside. Just my way of having some fun.

  • There's been some chatter about this one on the site, so I thought it might be a good BOTM.    I have noticed that it may have been called Russell's Reserve SmB Single barrel or Russell's Reserve Single Barrel SmB as well as Russell's Reserve Single Barrel. Whatever you choose to call it, it's the BOTM this time around.    I've seen this in a few places, but for some unknown reason I've never pulled the trigger on one. In other words, since I haven't had it before, I can't comment on it.  Although…………… I do happen to know someone that has a couple of bottles. Maybe before the month is out, I might just git a lil taste. (Hint Hint)    Cheers ya'all, and happy posting. Joe

  • Well, we're back at it this month.  Thanks to a suggestion from a fellow member, the BOTM this time around is Bowman Brothers Small Batch.   I don't have much to say about this one. I have had a couple of bottles of this in the past, but it's been quite a long time. From what I can remember, I thought it was a fairly decent bourbon. Of course I may be slightly biased because it was first distilled at BT before being sent to A. Smith Bowman for a second distilling and storage.  Maybe a wee bit high on the price, but other than that, pretty good stuff as I recall.   Cheers and happy posting.   Joe

  • Well, it's BOTM time again, and for once I ain't late.     As has been the case with many of the more recent BOTM's, we're gonna go back and revisit another one. The last time Booker's was the BOTM was way back in September of 2010. Below is what I wrote back then.    I can't add much as far as my own tasting notes go. I have only tasted this bourbon a few times, and the one bottle I own hasn't been opened yet. I did like it okay and was a bit surprised that the higher proof didn't overpower the flavor too much. From what I can remember, there was smoke, wood, tobacco, leather, and maybe a hint of nuttiness. Walnut?    All that pretty much still stands, but…., since 2010 there's been a couple of special releases, new named batches, and the price has dropped. FWIW, the price was what partly kept me from buying Booker's. It used to be anywhere from low to mid $50's to over $60 a bottle in some places around where I live. Now that it's at a more reasonable price, at least at one store near me, (mid/upper $40's IIRC) I just might have to buy myself a bottle.    Let's hear what y'all have to say about Booker's. Cheers and happy posting!   Joe

  • Once again I've gone back into the past and decided to revisit something that hasn't been the BOTM in a while. I'm pretty sure at least a couple of members will be happy with my pick this month.   Sad to say that I've never bought a bottle of OGD BIB. I have sampled it a few times, but it's been a while. I feel anything I might have to say would be somewhat irrelevant, so I'll just let y'all take over from here. Let's here what y'all have to say about OGD BIB.  Cheers and happy posting.   Joe

  • I have seen comments by board members on their personal "solera" bottle.  I am one week into a seven week diet program which allows no alcohol.  Now common sense would suggest I stay away of my wine/whiskey bar.  Well, oops.  So I decided to take one ounce from each of my 13 open American whiskey's and start my own solera bottle.  This will be my first pour six weeks from now.  I decided not to add any contents from my open scotch bottles.  It smells great!  For those that have solera bottles, what are you thoughts on adding Scotch to the mingle?  Look forward to the board's thoughts and experience.    For the record, the initial contents of my personal solera bottle are: 1 ounce each of 8YO MGP Rye at 60.9% from Single Cask Nation, Michters Barrel Strength Rye Batch 1 at 54.5%, Michter's 10YO at 47.2%, 1792 RR Astor private selection at 46.85%, 1792 FP Release 1 at 62.5%, ECBP Batch 9 at 67.8%, CEHT Barrel Proof Release 1 at 67.25%, Makers 46 at 47%, Larceny ay 48%, EWSB 2004 Liquor Outlet private barrel at 43.3%, Journeyman Featherbone at 59.6%, and OWA private barrrel from Bayway at 53.5%.

  • Noticed Evan Williams white label BIB was sporting a redesigned label today (my local store only carries the 1.75) My phone was in the car, but I'll try and get a shot on my next trip to the store. Appeared that most of the black was replaced by a light blue/gray. I can't find any mention of a redesign on the interwebs.

  • I know some members havent been getting their binnys coupon emails. There is new one out for $10 off any spirit or wine purchase over $10 on this Saturday & Sunday, 1/28-29. Must be a Binnys Reward member. If you need it, PM me. A perfect chance to get a break on something more pricey like the 1920 or Barrel Bourbon, or maybe a couple bottles of some staples. The Talisker Storm is also getting moved out for $35 -1/2 price!

  • This is probably old news to longtime SB.com members, but I just came across this, and thought you all might enjoy that this site's reputation is well enough thought of to be mentioned as a resource on Maker's Mark's website: https://www.makersmark.com/faq . (See the very last entry on the page.)   Dean

  • Higher proofs have more flavor for sure.  But, if you drink a larger swallow of lower proof, you actually can get a bit more flavor than a regular sip.  Just one way to deal with 80 proof.

  • So, planning on have 3 other bourbon fans over on Super Bowl Sunday and wanted to have some fun with a line up of bourbons for SBS tastings, probably blind so any age statements don't influence the scoring. I searched the forum thinking this has been done before, but maybe my search term was off. I did read about how to set things up for SBS tastings. Anyway, the photo shows my initial line up. I would like to add a fourth, so recommendations are welcomed!  Also, if anyone remembers a great line up, I'd like to know so my group can try to keep something like this going... But, I suppose anything could go as a theme -- price, proof, BIB, etc.

  • I searched it but just found where there were a bunch of purchases. Not much in reviews or quality. I see it from 25 to 39 bucks in Oklahoma. All opinions appreciated!
