SPOHNC Founder and President, Survivor Nancy Leupold, Announces Her RetirementAfter 25 years of service to SPOHNC, giving of herself, her time and her knowledge and resources, Nancy has decided that the time has come for her to enjoy her leisure, her family and her beloved cat, Cinnamon. SPOHNC’s Board of Directors, staff and members are joining together to wish her well. She brought the organization to its 25th year, and will now enjoy the journey of retirement, and the next exciting chapter in her life.
Nancy has given selflessly since the end of her treatment for oral cancer, creating Support For People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer, and its programs and services of support. Beginning with one Chapter on Long Island, and nine people in a room sharing their cancer journey, SPOHNC has now grown to more than 130 Chapter Support groups across the United States. SPOHNC’s NSVN match program, many books and print resources and monthly newsletter, "News from SPOHNC," were all created under the loving care and supervision of Nancy.
SPOHNC will highlight Nancy's 25 years in our upcoming October "News From SPOHNC" newsletter, which will include photo's, past events and highlights from her history with the organization and where she took the vision she had years ago.
If you wish to honor Nancy’s dedication to SPOHNC through a gift to the organization, please click on the link below and indicate that it is an Honorarium for Nancy. Special notes can be enclosed there as well, which will be sent along to her.
Prior To Her Retirement…
Nancy Leupold Receives Presidential Citation!
On behalf of SPOHNC, and its Board of Directors, we would like to announce that Nancy Leupold, Survivor, Founder and President of SPOHNC (Support For People With Oral And Head And Neck Cancer), received the American Head & Neck Society's Presidential Citation at the AHNS 9th International Conference on Head and Neck Cancer in Seattle, WA, on July 18th, 2016. Nancy has dedicated the last 25 years to SPOHNC. Her perseverance, commitment and insight has helped to support oral, head and neck cancer patients and their families throughout the United States. She is a visionary leader who has taken the organization from one support group when she was initially diagnosed in 1991 to 130+ across the country, today. She has also contributed her knowledge to many of the publications we offer to oral, head and neck cancer patients and their caregivers. Nancy drew strength from her own experience and has made it her mission to give hope to others.
In 1991, when SPOHNC was founded, there were very few support groups specifically for oral and head and neck cancer patients. Today, SPOHNC is pleased to have more than 125 chapters throughout the United States.

SPOHNC is pleased to introduce EmergingMed’s Clinical Trial Navigation Service. We want you to be aware of all of your treatment options. SPOHNC has partnered with EmergingMed to offer you a way to take action.
The CTNS is a free, unbiased service to help you find and connect with head and neck cancer clinical trials that may be an option for you. Call the Clinical Trial Navigators at 844-432-3888, email [email protected] or start your confidential search online for clinical trials that match your specific diagnosis, stage, and treatment history.
How does the service work?
The Clinical Trial Navigators will help you quickly search the entire national database for clinical trials that match your specific situation. They recommend that you search for clinical trial options before you begin your first treatment if possible, and again each time you are making a new treatment decision. This information service is designed to help you identify options—but you are NEVER obligated to enroll in a study. We simply never want to hear someone say: “I wish I had known about that earlier.” The service is free for patients and families; it is unbiased and completely confidential.
Clinical trials are research studies that test how well new medical approaches work in people with early and advanced head and neck cancers. They have a natural place in your review of treatment options as doctors strive to improve current head and neck cancer treatments and search for new and better options. Today there are various types of targeted therapies and immunotherapies in development, so there are more options to consider than ever before.
