Snakes are one of those animals we rush to judge pretty quickly. It’s not entirely unreasonable, since some species of snakes are very dangerous, but at times we overestimate just how much of a threat they pose.
Take this Nigerian python, for instance. When villagers saw it with a swollen stomach, they assumed it had eaten a calf, so they killed it to save the rest of their livestock. When they cut it open, though, they realized just how wrong they were.

They discovered that she hadn’t eaten any animals at all. This python looked so big because she was full of fertilized eggs that she had yet to lay.
African rock pythons like this one can carry up to 100 eggs at a time, but they usually try to stay hidden wherever they plan to lay their eggs. Unfortunately, she didn’t find a good nesting spot in time to save her life.
The villagers were only trying to protect their animals, but seeing this python with all her eggs still inside her is still shocking.
