    And new this week, you can add your own snippets via the preferences menu: link to a notebook there, and each section of that notebook becomes a searchable, insertable snippet. I've been using this for sets of imports that I type frequently:

    Updates on this, thanks to several folks who responded to the thread. Conda now supports this via the "run_constrained" section, though it's not all that well documented yet. Pip has something along these lines via the "extra_requires" section, though the user must opt in.

    One thing on my Python packaging wish list: a way to specify versions of peer dependencies — dependencies that are not strictly necessary, but have specific version requirements *if* you plan to use them.

    Currently we go with #2 in the Altair project, but it leads to a lot of frustrating issues for users who inadvertently upgrade one package without upgrading the other. A means of specifying peer dependencies in the packaging system would be a huge help to those users.

    Currently, we have two options: 1) pin vega's version in Altair's dependencies. But this isn't right: it will be needlessly installed for users who aren't using Jupyter notebook. 2) don't specify the dependency. But then a user may inadvertently install an incompatible version.

    A concrete example: Altair can be used to create charts either with or without the Jupyter notebook. But if you choose to use the Jupyter notebook, you need the vega extension, and a particular version of the vega extension for best results.

    Reminds me of the time after some math lecture that I tried to stump my dad by asking how he'd calculate pi using only a toothpick and a tiled floor. Without missing a beat, he replied that he'd prick his finger & use the blood on the tile to write 4 - 4/3 + 4/5 - 4/7 + 4/9...
