    Many analysts really do not understand nuanced nature/networks of public sphere. If you did, you would be far more alarmed by what is currently happening. Saudi feminism was last haven of speech & inclusive activism in Saudi. If that goes, everything else goes with it.

    This is true not least because of what feminism intersected with, and drew from. I won't go into all of it now, but know this: at its core, it was a dem. & civil rights movement. Under its umbrella, much was pushed for & successfully, despite all gov and social pressures.

    The detention of Saudi women’s rights activists makes no sense and can only backfire. These are people who were supportive of the direction of change in the kingdom - potential allies, really. The government missed that opportunity and tainted its own reforms.
