For , I took a close look at recent decision to grant Israeli citizens legal access to Homesh, a disbanded settlement in the West Bank. In doing so, this Israeli government has begun to fulfill one of the settler movement’s central demands.

“The second you give political extremists a victory, the second you give in to one demand, their political imagination travels very far.” For this week's newsletter, explains how Israeli settlers finally gained a foothold in Homesh:

Hillel was hosting an Israeli intelligence officer, a perfectly appropriate target of protest. You can't host someone complicit in Israeli apartheid and not expect protests. Lipstadt's claim is irresponsible.

Yesterday, on a call with ADL head Jonathan Greenblatt, Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt spread disinfo, claiming that a blatant act of "antisemitism" occurred at GW. She was referring to a protest of an Israeli intelligence officer who spoke at Hillel during the holiday of Sukkot

NEW: So, what's the deal with that 60-page anti-antisemitism plan that Biden released last week? I gotchu. Close read of the plan reveals it both nods to progressive input, mostly sidestepping Zionism, and doubles down on existing carceral approaches

Zero tolerance for free speech critical of Israel! Lawler (R-NY) intros bill to bar Title IV $$ to US schools that allow events where students criticize Israel (in response to CUNY student's graduation speech supporting Palestinian rights)

I watched the video of Fatima Mohammed's speech. It was warm (references to her grandparents, in Yemen, watching the speech); moving (the impact of the pandemic on her cohort); and political, w/a critique of the police, ICE, intellectual property law, Riker's, Schumer, racism and

Van Hollen keeps up the pressure on the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh
Quote Tweet
Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) says he has run out of patience, wants to see updated report on killing of Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by Friday or threatens to use whatever powers he has that he has never done before. At end of rope in terms of simple request for report

We wanted to know why typically progressive legislators, including some endorsed by the Working Family Party and The Jewish Vote, jumped to oppose a bill to end tax deductible donations to settlements from New York. So and I called to ask them.

Mamdani acknowledged that there is little chance of it being enacted into law. “When you have a piece of legislation that threatens to upend the way New York politics works, it will take a long time to win...But the only way you get to the finish line is if you actually start.”

Asked about progressive opposition to the bill, said: "I’ve grown up seeing politicians that I’ve admired time and again draw an exception when it comes to Palestine. It’s an issue where people make decisions on the basis of political calculus.”

also addressed the "singling out" criticism, saying that the state needs a bill focused on Israel because otherwise, the political sensitivity of Israel/Palestine discourages the enforcement of laws targeting wrongdoing by nonprofits.

saidthat because the bill concerns New York charity regulations, it’s relevant to Albany legislators. “Stating that our laws here in New York state have no interaction with that which occurs outside of the state is an ‘ignorance is bliss’ kind of mentality."

Assemblymember MaryJane Shimsky said it doesn’t “make sense” for a state legislature to get involved in a foreign policy issue, which is something the federal government should take action on.

Asked whether charities that send money to settlements should have nonprofit status, said that she’d be open to a broader discussion, but that “with this bill, I can’t even get to the substance of it, because of it starting with Israel.”

is a progressive who opposes the bill because, she said, it suggests Israel "doesn’t have the same power, authority, and space to make decisions about its border, its foreign policy, and its internal happenings."

We reached out to 12 of New York’s progressive assemblymembers who have opposed the “Not on our dime” bill to clarify their positions on whether New York nonprofits should be allowed to fund settlements. 10 declined or did not respond; we interviewed two lawmakers.

NEW from me and : 's bill in the NY legislature would prevent nonprofits from sending funds to Israeli settlements. Democratic presidents have long opposed settlements. But most state Democrats, including progressives, oppose it.

As a alum, I am deeply disturbed by the school’s misguided statement. For a university to bully a student is not only disheartening but wholly unacceptable. Fatima Mousa Mohammed was brave to denounce settler colonial violence, and we must support her.
