At 26th August of 1996, the TV series "Malcolm & Eddie" premiered on UPN. "Malcolm & Eddie" is an American television sitcom that premiered August 26, 1996 on UPN, and ran for four seasons, airing its final episode on May 22, 2000. This series starred Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Eddie Griffin in the lead roles. The program was produced by Jeff Franklin Productions in association with TriStar Television in its first three seasons and by Columbia TriStar Television in its final season.
Bright and energetic comedian Eddie Griffin, at one time named "the king of hip-hop stand-ups," won over a large audience with his straight-talking comedy routines, but reached even more people as an actor, excelling especially in comedic roles, but proving more than capable of dramatic fare as well.
As star of "Malcolm & Eddie," one of UPN's most successful and long-running sitcoms, Griffin was able to try his hand at other facets of the entertainment industry, serving as writer, producer and director of select episodes, as well as co-writing the theme song with co-star and former "Cosby" kid Malcolm-Jamal Warner. The series also occasionally showcased Griffin's choreography, harkening back to his pre-comedy dance career.
Malcolm McGee (Malcolm-Jamal Warner) is a responsible and sensible 20-something who ends up sharing a Kansas City apartment and a business venture with relentlessly enthusiastic tow truck owner Eddie Sherman (Eddie Griffin). A fast talker with outlandish frenetic energy, Eddie's charming schemes always seems to get the two into hot water.
But no matter what the situation, these opposites always end up bailing each other out, even if they drive each other crazy. When the guys unexpectedly became recipients of a considerable sum of money, Malcolm and Eddie decided to buy not only the old Irish pub below their apartment, but the entire building, including Eddie's garage, as an investment. As new bar owners, the guys gave the place a facelift by turning it into a sports bar and renaming it McGee's.
There, they hang out with local regulars, including Tim (Jaime Cardriche), a gentle giant working as a male nurse, and Nicolette (Karen Malina White), the motor-mouth police academy cadet with a love-crazed obsession for Eddie. As Malcolm manages McGee's and Eddie tries to bolster his fledging one-man/one-truck towing operation into a fleet, success for these two could be as simple as staying out of trouble.
We can thank "Full House" creator Jeff Franklin his producing duties on Malcolm and Eddie, a show proving that opposites do attract. The two friends would wrestle almost everything from winning the lottery to mastering pool with the late Richard Pryor. At the time, comedy duos relating to a younger audience were few and far in between, but their chemistry was almost organic as they threw jokes and insane scenarios back and forth.

On this day:
At 6th June of 1998, the cable network HBO airs the first episode of "Sex and the City", a new comedy series chronicling the lives and loves of four single women living in New York City. Broadcast from 1998 until 2004, the original run of the show had a total of 94 episodes. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker (as Carrie Bradshaw), Kim Cattrall (as Samantha Jones), Kristin Davis (as Charlotte York), and Cynthia Nixon (as Miranda Hobbes), the quirky series had multiple continuing storylines that tackled relevant and modern social issues such as sexuality, safe sex, promiscuity and femininity, while exploring the difference between friendships and romantic relationships. The series received both acclaim and criticism for its subjects and characters, and spawned two feature films, "Sex and the City" (2008) and its sequel "Sex and the City 2" (2010), and a prequel series by The CW, "The Carrie Diaries".
With their Sunday-night line-up of original programs, HBO garnered critical raves, numerous awards, and a plethora of new viewers. These shows, which went beyond the boundaries set by conventional network television, changed the way that many look at episodic TV. And by breaking the rules, HBO changed the rules as well. This is exemplified by the TV series 'Sex and the City'.
'Sex and the City' is the award-winning HBO comedy series starring Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw, columnist), Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones, public relations executive), Kristin Davis (Charlotte York, art dealer), and Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes, lawyer), all of which are single thirty-something woman in New York City. Chris Noth (Mr. Big, a wealthy business tycoon) also shows up from time to time as a love interest.
Each episode follows Carrie as she "researches" and writes about various sexual topics for her column, "Sex and the City," a chronicle of the single life in New York. A few of the topics covered include: having sex like men, modelizers (men who only date models), dating younger men, married vs. single people, keeping sex secret, monogamy, threesomes, pregnancy, vibrators, and celibacy. Her friends also appear every episode, to either provide their opinions or recent experience on each research topic.
These four women go through the endless search for love and true happiness, but with a tinge of Seinfeld humor. Especially in the first two seasons, one can't help at laugh at the guys these women date and what they might or might not be prepared to put up with for a successful relationship. In the meantime, we sit in one their Sunday morning brunches as they discuss all of the biggest sexual issues of our day: From vibrators to bad kissers to impotent partners to bisexuality, it's all there.
Back in 1998 when this series started on HBO many didn't know what to expect or how to take it. Well everyone would learn over the years it would launch a new movement in how women looked at friendships, relationships, sex and love. Plus this series was progressive and provocative that showed that women could enjoy sex freely and feel happy and independent about it.
This show is a hilarious, fictional comedy that is not to be taken seriously or mistaken for reality. What it does is put a lighthearted, comedic spin on sex, relationships, and living the 'Big' life in the 'Big' city, pun intended. These four very different women each represent something that every woman possesses. Charlotte is the sweet, fairy tale life girl, Miranda is the realistic cynic who brings us back to reality, Samantha is our sexual fantasy side, and Carrie is what every girl aspires towards. Even though many people chastise these women for their wanton ways, a little bit of 'Sex' can be found in each of us.
