Image optimization for billions, on Android and Web:
Picture this: your app or website performing quickly and cheaply for billions of users. How? Build image optimization into your workflow: on Android, use Android Studio’s APK Analyzer to understand how your existing images affect your APK size.

On Web, the Chrome DevTools Network panel shows the total byte size for all resources, and can be used to ascertain weights for individual asset types such as images. (Firefox and other browsers offer similar testing tools). Use apps such as ImageOptim (https://imageoptim.com) to optimize images such as logos, gradients and backgrounds — and build image optimisation into your workflow with tools such as Imagemin (https://github.com/sindresorhus/gulp-imagemin, https://github.com/gruntjs/grunt-contrib-imagemin).

This is the first of five weekly posts we’re sharing on how to optimize images on Android and Web for billions of users. Check out our full lists of resources at g.co/dev/billions.

The API is simple to integrate, keeps all personal data stored on the device and gives developers full control over what goes into the index.
