When You Need the Perfect Dress for Defcon #WearableWednesday

Roxy Dee (@theroxydee) wanted to do something different for Defcon 25. Although she is usually all about infosec, she decided to transfer her tech love to fashion and created a Cyber Dress. Of course like most preparations go for cons, there was very little time, so Roxy opted for a simple hack to a lace-up style black dress. She used fairy lights, those tiny strands you can find in craft stores, in pink and blue. Weaving them through the holes in the dress led to a cool cross design on the upper body while leftover lights were scattered around the neckline.

As I was zooming through the Tweets from Defcon I came across the mac-daddy of wearables. This is the #WiFiCactus created by Mike Spicer (@d4rkm4tter), and I can guarantee that this will be on my top ten list for the year! If anyone remembers the episode of Silicon Valley where the team is at Hooli-Con hiding the pineapples, then you know exactly what this wearable is all about. I tracked Mike down to interview him about this hilarious yet functional piece.

What is the capability of the Cactus?

The #WifiCactus has 50 total WiFi radio that are being used for passive monitoring of the wireless devices near it. It is capable of detecting common WiFi threats including the newly released BroadPwn vulnerability which was publicly released at BlackHat on the July 27th. This is helpful in an environment like DEF CON where you have an estimated 25k attendees who all have wireless devices doing many different things.

Why did you make it?

You typically hear that DEF CON and BlackHat are the most dangerous networks in the world and I wanted evidence to show what the actual risks are. I believe it is important to not just know that there are risks, but to understand how they work so that you can properly protect yourself. I also wanted to see how many people would heed the advice to connect to trusted encrypted networks, disable WiFi or enable airplane mode. During one of my demo labs I saw 14k active devices in range of the Cactus. I was not expecting this number of devices but I am not surprised because people want to be constantly connected to the internet.

Add this project from JinGen Lim to our ongoing catalog of PCB art. The tips & lessons learnt are especially useful heads-up for anyone interested in exploring PCBs for alternative design purposes!

A while ago, I chanced upon a satirical “boy scout badge” featuring the text “Centered vertically in CSS” by @mrgan.

I had little experience with fabric, but building a lapel out of PCB seemed like something that might just work. PCBs are typically built with extremely high tolerances for its copper and mask layers and still acceptably accurate for the silkscreen.

This bot not only has beautiful locomotion, but it is also a great water monitoring device. According to TechCrunch it was created by a team at l’École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland. Apparently this is the same school that created croco creatures for the BBC nature series Spy in the Wild. Envirobot, as it is called, has the advantage of moving like an eel with little wake, so it does not further disperse the pollutants it is trying to study. Another advantage of the bot is that it is modular, so researchers can configure the sensor segments as needed.

Electric sensors can track the salinity of the water, and chemical ones obviously can test for acidity or certain elements. The biological sensors are different, though: they’re filled with living organisms or tissues—fish cells, microfauna, etc.—which react in predictable ways to, say, the presence of insecticides or other toxins.
