Saint Peter Claver, pray for us!
Born in Spain, Saint Peter Claver was educated by Jesuits. He joined a Jesuit mission to the New World and arrived in what is now Colombia in 1610. He was ordained there and began a life-long ministry among African slaves. Peter felt it best to show the Christian spirit through action, so he brought the slaves food and medicine. Later, he would convey with drawings that they were loved by God even though they were abused by man. He was said to have baptized more than 300,000 and is patron of missionary work among blacks.
This year's theme for Catechetical Sunday is "Stay with Us." We pray for all catechists across the country who will be called forth to be commissioned for this ministry. This Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel.
