Haiti earthquake - 7 years later.
On January 12th 2010, Haiti was struck by a magnitude-7 earthquake, killing 300,000 residents and leaving more than 1.5 million people homeless.
The country was devastated, and many families struggled to face the momentous challenges of their daily life after their homes and communities were torn apart by the disaster. Even today, more than 50,000 people still live in camps, and for many the process of recovery is still ongoing.
Back in 2010, IsraAID quickly responded, sending what was then the organization's largest team of search and rescue experts, mobile clinics and child-friendly spaces. In the years since, IsraAID has stayed committed to Haiti - our first long-term operation. Working together with local and international partners, we tackled a wide range of topics - empowering youth in #Port-Au-Prince and #Leogane, building vocational training centers, facilitating #livelihood opportunities for women-led households, training on #agriculture methods for countless groups, and most recently providing tools for great national professionals to combat gender-based violence and support survivors.
Following the recent destruction of hurricane Matthew, IsraAID's team on the ground responded immediately, drawing on years of experience and partnerships on the ground to provide relief in the hours after the storm. This work we continue in 2017.
On this day, as we pause to remember and mourn those who were lost, we are inspired by the resilience and strength of the Haitian people, and look forward to a prosperous future in 2017.
