    21 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

Envisioning the world *after* Trump is incredibly important right now.

  2. 12 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

Hypocritically, many proponents of further sprawl+ pouring more money into auto infrastructure accuse urbanists of having elitist agendas...

  3. 14 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

Everything done between now + then to either to delay dense development or promote car ownership means more people trapped out there.

  4. 17 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

So, a grimly probable case: 80M (+/-) poor people living on the exurban fringe—in places built for cars—who can't really afford to drive.

  5. 18 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

and as more and more investment, planning & infrastructure choices align with the new model, owning a car becomes a liability, not an asset.

  6. 20 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

But as car ownership is outcompeted by lower cost/ greater livability of walkability/transit/on-demand rides/dematerialized trips + delivery

  7. 21 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

This displacement from costly urban homes to cheap exurban housing a rational, if unfortunate, response when everyone must own a car...

  8. 22 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

Simultaneously, the demographic inversion is pushing the poor to the places with lowest housing costs: the outer ring and exurbs.

  9. 23 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

But the outer ring (and the exurbs beyond) would be hard to fix if we began now: delay means, effectively, they won't get fixed.

  10. 24 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

Some low-density places are more favored than others: the very wealthy can afford not to care; inner ring burbs are easiest to retrofit, etc

  11. 26 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

Denying that auto-dependent sprawl is literally unsustainable—ecologically, socially + financially—prevents changes needed to rebuild them.

  12. 26 ನಿಮಿಷಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

If we were being honest, we'd acknowledge that North American suburban + exurban places that remain unchanged have dismal futures ahead.

“Californians,” California Space Agency Director Collins announced with a smile, “are now a space-faring people.”

  14. 1 ಗಂಟೆ ಹಿಂದೆ

The BBC interviewed me about Trump, his Big Oil ties and the Carbon Bubble. Starts around minute 9:00 here.

  16. 15 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

The cure for your anger and despair is solidarity and action.

  17. 11 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ
  18. 21 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

Envisioning the world *after* Trump is incredibly important right now.

  19. 22 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

Making you believe things can only get worse is a core strategy of authoritarians. Resist. Defend your vision of a positive future.

  20. 10 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

American democracy is orders of magnitude more important for real sustainability and climate action than are well-designed electric cars.

  21. 16 ಗಂಟೆಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ

Give the some money, whatever you can afford. They're the front line defending America and our democracy:
