The majority of WordPress themes let you pick a color for the background or set a background image by supporting the Custom Background feature of WordPress core.

Set a custom background

In case custom backgrounds are supported by the theme, you can configure your background on your WordPress admin panel → Appearance → Background.

After you have uploaded a background image you can configure the position, repeatment and fixation of the image. Of course you can only use a background color as well.
