No it's just an incoherent mess. The two kinds may seem similar at first glance, but one of them is actually possible to work on.

Sorry, shoulda noted that my additions were not exhaustive. Thanks for the reminder, the Slavs definitely had a bad time in Hitler's Germany.

Yes and plenty of natural born US citizens also like Trevor Noah because his outsider perspective lets him have a definite position on how and why American politics is so damn absurd. It's similar to Stewart in that they both point out absurdity in US politics with a position as to why it's absurd.

Aside: I love that people are downvoting me for not liking Colbert. That's real mature guys.

What scientific truth of today you think will debunked in the future? by bubblerj in AskReddit

[–]dakta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a couple perfectly good explanations here. First we need to note that "evolution" did not wholesale favor milk digestion, as this ability is highly ethno-regionalized. It's estimated that overall 65% of adults across the globe are lactose intolerant. Clearly that's not evolution favoring the ability to consume dairy.

Lactase persistence is high in the Arabian peninsula and in Northern Europe. The further you get from the U.K., the worse are the odds that as an adult you are able to digest lactose.

This is likely a genetic persistent effect of adaptation to diet (there's not much to eat in those regions unless you keep dairy animals, it's just grass and shrubs), and doesn't mean that milk is at all good for you.

Yeah, it's quite unfortunate. The internet offers such huge potential for the opposite (connecting with others of different background, experience, and views for productive discourse), but the structures of online communities incentivize the exact opposite: an exaggeration of ideological self-selection which perpetuates combative group dynamics.

In fact, this phenomenon seems to very well parallel actual physical community divisions (in the US), which underlie so much of modern sociopolitical conflict. In essence, it seems that increased choice of community (a natural result of increased prosperity) enables natural group self-selection along fundamental developmental behavioral (pseudo-ideological) lines. This creates a highly divided patchwork community phenomenon, where the vast majority of people live in communities of like-mindedness and cannot comprehend the existence of opposite-minded communities.

If you find this interesting, I highly recommend Bill Bishop's The Big Sort. Bishop is a classic Texas conservative, writer and editor of numerous small/medium papers in the state including the Austin American Statesman, who began researching this subject for a series of articles in the '90s. He ultimately connected with a professor of sociology at U.Texas/Austin, and the two spent a decade poring over raw statistical demographic data and population trends to pin down the evidence for their theory. The book presents a strong narrative of stories which illustrate in very concrete terms the reality of these bare statistics.

Sometimes. I mean, that's the ideal, but everyone tends to get preoccupied with their pet issues to the detriment of all other discourse.

And I do actually mean everyone, this is not a phenomenon unique to feminists. They have their men haters, racial equality activists have their white haters, LGBT activists have their cis/het haters, economic equality activists have their anarchists... No activist group is immune to this.

Yeah, I never really liked Colbert for that reason. His satire always seemed to ring completely hollow, because it lacked any actual criticism of the subject being satirized.

Stewart, on the other hand, balanced political comedy and satire by blending completely serious straight faced critiques into his routine. Trevor Noah is doing an OK job (he's not quite as funny, IMO, but he still balances substance) and John Oliver is killing it.

The proof is in the pudding: conservatives liked the Colbert Report, but didn't and don't like any of those three others. I assume you've listened to the Malcolm Gladwell podcast episode about the Colbert Effect? If not, highly recommended.

Opening a post in Narwhal on iPhone prompts Safari Handoff on iPad by blueboat21 in apple

[–]dakta 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Handoff is a super great technology that's extremely versatile, but a lot of app developers don't bother implementing support for it.

You can, theoretically, handoff from a Mac app to Safari on iOS, or even from Chrome on iOS to a native Mac app. But Chrome on iOS doesn't support Handoff AFAIK and no native Mac app does either. Even though they could...

Opening a post in Narwhal on iPhone prompts Safari Handoff on iPad by blueboat21 in apple

[–]dakta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nope.

Handoff is supported between any combination of native app and web browser. This means you can (theoretically) handoff from Chrome on your desktop to the native app on your phone, or even from Safari on iOS to a native Mac app.

It's just all up to the developer to implement this functionality.

Whats that one ingredient you keep in your pantry/fridge which people would question why? by LearnasauRUSS in Cooking

[–]dakta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, nothing I'm saying here should be construed as an argument against taking responsibility for one's food allergies, or of politely and reasonably informing others of them when appropriate. You seem to have mis-contrued my comment as taking that kind of position, which I agree is absurd. That said, I'd like to address a few of your comments.

If your husband has a soy problem, then you should know that the protein content difference between blended vegetable oil and TVP is the difference between potentially feeling unwell and having to bust out the Epi-pen while dialing 911.

I would not expect a host to cater to that

Forget your caveat about advance notice, which is a reasonable thing for a host to request, just consider the notion that a host should "cater to" potentially life-threatening food allergies. Which common usage sense of the phrase do you mean?

"(cater to) try to satisfy (a particular need or demand)." What, the same way that a considerate host "caters" to vegetarians, or Aunt Liz's latest fad diet? So a potentially life-threatening food allergy is just another inconvenience whose worst outcome is hurt feelings?

Or did you mean the other sense of the word, a la "(cater to) provide with what is needed or required." Like a considerate host is entitled to feeling resentment at their guests, for having to avoid unintentionally poisoning some of them?

Look, I'd be annoyed too if I invited someone for dinner and they told me, when the food was served, that they couldn't eat half of it due to a diagnosed medical condition. I'd only be annoyed because I would have gladly taken their dietary restrictions into consideration when selecting and preparing the meal, because even though their condition is outside of their control they should inform others. If they were following a fad diet or had some other non-medical dietary preference, I'd be annoyed at them for having a stupid diet and not telling me.

I'd also be annoyed as fuck if someone invited me to dinner, including an advance menu, and I made the mistaken assumption that home-made ragu alla bolognese would actually contain beef only to discover that they had adulterated it with a cheap filler. TVP is not a traditional ingredient in literally any cuisine, and is typically only used as a low cost filler in the cheapest tiers of commercial food suppliers.

The simple solution to all of this bickering is two-sided: when you have guests, it's always pertinent to remember to ask if anyone has food allergies or other conditions, in case they haven't ever told you or you have forgotten; when you are a guest, it's always pertinent to remind your host of any food allergies or other conditions you have, in case you haven't told them or they have forgotten.

[Serious] Male sex workers of Reddit. How do your clients look like and what is you most and least common request? by notareadablename in AskReddit

[–]dakta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, nothing I'm saying here applies to a "child". You don't even diagnose either of these conditions until after puberty, because they're often grown out of as development progresses. Secondly, continuing...

"Much better solution" really depends on the nature of the individual condition. Frenulum breve is typically treated by separating the frenulum with a cinching knot. However, tight or inadequate foreskin can only be treated by optimistic steroids and stretching, or just cutting it off.

The consequences are more than mild unpleasantness, anyways, but I'm not gonna get into that if you think these conditions have anything to do with children or childhood circumcision.
