The fantasy football community seems to have a really short memory. This week the silliness seems to be about the Fournette/Yeldon situation.
For whatever reason there seems to be this assumption that if fournette is out, Yeldon is going to be the start of the week. Make sure to pick up Yeldon! Go Yeldon! 3 cheers for Yeldon!
What? Go back and look at the game logs. He’s never put up great numbers. Except against the colts...but everybody runs all over the colts. Freakin Jonas Gray ran for 200 yards and 4 tds against the colts. Their run defense has been historically bad for years.
The jags drafted Yeldon in 2015 and tried to make him their guy. We heard all about it for months. Drafting him was their answer to the fact Toby “the White Rhino” Gerhart didn’t pan out (another dumb craze for an underwhelming RB btw). So they bring Yeldon in. Spent a second round pick on him.
And you know what??!?!? .....meh.
So much so that they had the fewest rushing yards per game in the NFL for those two seasons. Combine that with the Bortlification of their passing game and they might have been one of the worst teams in recent memory (kind of like this years bills).
So they took their super high 1st round pick in 2017 (because of course they had the #4 pick...it’s almost surprising it wasn’t higher... But that was the Browns first year with Hue Jackson) and grabbed a guy that was considered to be a generational talent in Fournette.
They then restructured their entire team around Fournette. Their offense flows through him. It’s super obvious to anyone that watches even 5 minutes of that team. And he’s amazing so it works.
But Yeldon isn’t amazing. He’s not terrible, but he’s just kind of “a guy” as far as NFL level talent goes. And I would be shocked if it worked going through him. He’s not capable of being the cornerstone of the team like that. Or if he is his history doesn’t show it.
Start him at your own peril, folks. He’s not going to be what everyone is saying. Now the Pats are pretty weak against the run too. But my guess would be like 40-50 yards, maybe 2 or 3 receptions, and zero TDs. I bet he even gets a few goal line carries that he won’t be able to punch in. If Fournette is out this game its going to be a nightmare for the entire Jags offense.
And I’m going to put my money where my mouth is, so to speak. If he scores double digit points in standard, I’ll drive into downtown Hartford and lick the sidewalk. Either I’ll get a terrible taste in my mouth, or the Yeldon starters will. I’m confident it won’t be me.
2007 Week 15 at Cowboys Stadium: - Brian Westbrook broke into the open field at the end of the game and took a knee at the 1 yard line instead of running it in so Philly could run out the clock.
2008 Week 2 at Cowboys Stadium - DeSean Jackson started celebrating prematurely on a 60 yard catch and dropped the ball at the 1 yard line. Brian Westbrook comes in and scores a 1 yard touchdown on the ensuing play.
Disclaimer: First of all, Diggs is my favorite receiver in the NFL. I don't own him on any team unfortunately, but you should know in case that changes how you feel about this post. Also, I don't know too much about football, I've only started paying attention a few years ago.
So after making what I see is now a bad trade (inebriated, what can ya do) for Adam Thielen, I decided to look into the player I just added. Reddit seems torn a tad on the issue, but many on this sub leaned towards Thielen regressing hard, AND I COULD NOT ACCEPT THAT. So this is a closer look at Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, for those who can't decide who is going to flourish this year. The answer may not shock you! A lot of the research goes off DYAR (Defense-adjusted Yards Above Replacement) and DVOA (Defense-adjusted Value Over Average), both of which are explained here.
One argument mentioned a lot is that Thielen caught several balls when plays fell apart and Case had to improvise. This has some substance to it. Thielen caught the most balls on broken plays in the league (13), albeit at the worst percentage of the top 15 (33.3%). Case was ranked 12th on broken plays and was T-3rd with 25 attempts (13 to Thielen, 5 to Diggs); Kirk was 17th (9% below average) on broken plays at only 11 attempts. However, Thielen had 142 targets, which drops to 129 without these broken plays, still a solid number to create production. Take that as you will.
Now for some actual routes. According to DVOA last year, Thielen was the 7th best receiver on comeback routes, 15th on curl routes, and the 21st on drag routes. My boy Diggs was 4th best receiver on drag routes and the 14th on comeback routes. Remember these. Stats here.
Now for Cousins. This is his success on the best routes run by Diggs and Thielen (last year, based on DYAR, with DVOA included; stats here:
Comeback routes - ranked 17th, 98 attempts (6th), ~70% completion rating, -10% DVOA
Curl routes (most common route in the league) - ranked 8th, 80 attempts (7th), ~80% completion rating (3rd), 6% DVOA
Drag routes - ranked 23rd, 25 attempts (10th), 69% completion rating, -17% DVOA
Clearly Kirk heavily favors the curl route, but still ranks in the top 10 in attempts on each of Diggs’ and Thielen’s top routes. Aka the volume could still be there, as we saw 18 targets between the two in week 1. I went back to watch the game highlights, I didn't watch every target, but here are almost all the completions between Diggs and Thielen during the first game (Sorry, If I have time today I'll go back and add the missed ones).

Kirk is playing to their strengths obviously, and he seemed to look for Thielen on many shorter routes, although it is only a one game sample size. However, at one point during the game, Pro Football Focus expert Nathan Jahnke tweeted the slot shares: Thielen had 20 to Diggs' 2. Kirk was ranked 10th when throwing to the slot, 19th to wideouts. Check it out. Also, there are multiple reports showing Thielen's increased usage in the slot. If the trend continues, it may be that Diggs will take most of the deep work with occasional short yardage work, and Thielen should be the exact opposite. Last year, Diggs was THE number 1 player in contested catch situations, and get this... Thielen ranked 6th in the league. They have two top-6 players in contested catch situations... should be good for Kirk going long or forcing a tough completion.
CONCLUSION
They show similar ability, but have clear distinctions in what one does better than the other (no shit). They will be used interchangeably, but based on Kirk's skills and the best usage for Thielen and Diggs: Thielen should have a very high floor this season playing out of the slot and being a comfortable target for Kirk's more favorable throws. Diggs is very versatile and quick, he is perfect for cutting up the middle of the field and has the definite higher ceiling than Thielen if Kirk starts finding Diggs down the field. In full PPR, I'd personally rather have Thielen. I don't expect 12 targets a game, but a healthy 7-9 targets a night is almost a guarantee as what I think will be Kirk's favorite player this year. They are both WR2s with potential to both be WR1s, but it's not too likely that happens. They will flirt often with WR1 numbers though, and the run game on the Vikings should provide consistency in both receivers' fantasy production week to week. Thielen will be great. Diggs will be great. Don't overthink it... cause I just did for you.
TL;DR - Not surprising: Both are are going to be solid this year. Thielen has a very high floor especially in PPR, and Diggs has a high ceiling. Thielen will not crash and burn. Ether one (or both) has potential to be a WR1.
Extra crap
Odell is top route runner like... Thielen and Diggs!
According to this report, Thielen and Diggs were number 1 at 3 different routes in the league last year!
Just a heads up for Baldwin owners, the designation finally came through. Pick up a handcuff or flyer for a free lottery ticket!
Who are y’all targeting?

EMERGENCY JOSH GORDON THREE CARD READING. PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE DRAW! (Proof of read)
| Card # | Card | Keywords | Hot Take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card 1 - The Past | Page of Swords | Curiosity, restlessness, mental energy | Jash Gordan came into the league eager to play and find his role, but he was also restless and not focused on his performance in the league and putting energy into "extra-curricular activities". |
| Card 2 - The Present | Temperance - Reversed | Extremes, excess, lack of balance | Wow, spot on. Substance use and a lack of work-life balance has plagued Josh. He can't stay on the field even when performing well in his comeback game last week. |
| Card 3 - The Future | VII of Pentacles - Reversed | Work without results, distractions, lack of rewards | Well, it looks like Gordon won't be rewarded for this. I think it's easy to assume that he signs elsewhere, but no matter what he hasn't gotten the most out of his time in Cleveland and has damaged his future rewards significantly. "You find yourself frustrated, and looking for other opportunities. |
| QB Name | Card | Keywords | Hot Take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Drew Brees | IV of Cups | Apathy, contemplation, disconnectedness | The visuals actually seem ok to me despite the description of this card. The golden light flowing into the cup shows Brees's potential here, but he isn't taking it. Ignoring the gifts might relate more to ignoring some of his more gifted teammates this game than his own performance. |
| Ben Roethlisberger | IX of Cups | Comfort, emotional stability, luxury | Damn, Big Ben just chillin on a comfy couch surrounded by cups. He has the teammates to dominate this game, but he can't take things for granted especially with a minor injury. Good week ahead as long as he keeps moving. |
| Cam Newton | King of Wands | Big picture, leader, overcoming challenges | This is what Cam needs to display this week against Atlanta, confidence and vision. With Olsen out he has to lead his team to victory and he looks poised to do so. No matter what he's gonna go hard this week, I'm hoping for another rushing TD. |
| Deshaun Watson | The Hermit - Reversed | Loneliness, Isolation, lost your way | Interesting draw for Watson. The injury may still be in his head. I think he needs another week to really get back into the swing of things. |
| Patrick Mahomes | V of Pentacles | Recovery, isolation | Great sign for Mahomes this week. I'm not sure anyone thought his performance last week was missing much, but he's pushed beyond it and his hands are breaking through the door. |
| RB Name | Card | Keywords | Hot Take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Todd Gurley | II of Pentacles - Reversed | Loss of Balance, disorganized, overwhelmed | I don't think it's going to be Todd Gurley who is overwhelmed, but the Arizona defense. This could be an unbalanced game for him (carries vs receptions, yards vs tds, etc), but cant imagine a bad game beyond a fumble. |
| Alvin Kamara | King of Swords | Intellectual, Power, Truth | Kamara is locked in this week, sharp and clear. Expect a kingly week. |
| Melvin Gordon | VI of Cups | Nostalia, happy memories, reunion | Gordon is a bunny in a garden this week, should point to rushing yards against the Bills. Fumbles might be a concern with being too ahead of himself, but a good performance overall. |
| Ezekiel Elliott | The World | Fulfillment, harmony, completion | Elliot will reach completion against the Giants. Confident start, should have triple digit yards. |
| James Conner | VII of Wands - Reversed | Give up, destroyed confidence, feeling overwhelmed | Scary draw for Connor owners. It's hard to practically see Conner having a bad game against KC, but it's very likely that the Bell drama is weighing on his mind. He's strong and I think he'll overcome, but that doesn't guarantee he won't lose his head. |
| WR Name | Card | Keywords | Hot Take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Antonio Brown | VII of Cups - Reversed | Temptation, diversion, confusion | "All that glitters is not gold" That's it, Brown is having an All-Star performance. I don't care that this card suggests that he may be overvalued. |
| Michael Thomas | IX of Cups | Greed, smugness, dissatisfaction | There's still something missing, but greed is good for a fantasy team. Even if Thomas isn't happy, he should be getting fed. |
| DeAndre Hopkins | Death - Reversed | Fear of Change, holding on, stagnation | Radical transformation could be good, but right now Hopkins is living in the shadow of his former self. He needs to let the cycle end, but I think we're in for more of the same as last week. |
| Julio Jones | V of Swords | Unbridled ambition, win at all costs, sneakiness | Victory has already been achieved. I think Julio always has a target on his back, but he's ready to win at all costs. TD incoming. |
| OBJ | Queen of Wands | Courage, determination, joy | OBJ's dual staves make him ready to attack this week. He's going to look good, even if the Giants don't. |
Who do you guys think will emerge as the #2 WR behind Landry for the Browns? Higgins or Callaway?
Higgins outplayed Callaway week 1 vs. the steelers with 54 snaps and 4 targets (Callaway had 15 snaps and 1 target)
