Hey, iOS users!

For the past few months, we’ve been working on improving your native mobile experiences. Today, this comes together in a feature-packed version 4.0 of the Reddit app for iOS. We’re excited to introduce a new set of features and mod tools. Check out this video!

For all users:

  • Our chat beta is now available for everyone to join — you’ll be able to try out both 1-1 and group chat with your fellow redditors!
  • A brand new theater mode accessible through feeds and communities to make it easy for you to view and swipe through media (images, gifs, and videos) in portrait or landscape orientation.
  • Live comments, accessible through comment sorting within a post.
  • More post flair functionality, including updated post flair selection, the ability to edit the text of a flair, and ability to change the flair for a post that you’ve already created.
  • A trophy case in your profile so you can see your hard-earned, shiny trophies in the app (check out the new trophy illustrations, now live in your profile!).
  • A cake icon beside your username on your cake day.
  • You can now see OP usernames in-feed, so you know who created the post.

For mods:

  • Mod mode to make it easier for you to action on posts and comments.
  • Mod queue (with bulk actions!) so you can moderate your communities in one place. One thing that’s missing is a post AND comments aggregate listing. We’re working on this!
  • A r/mod listing in the subscriptions tab so you can see posts from all the communities you mod in one place (with mod mode to take actions).
  • Modmail
  • You’ll notice your communities that have opted into the Modmail beta loads messages in a native view, but communities that are still operating on original modmail will open in a browser on the desktop site on iOS. We wanted you to still be able to access original Modmail while we continue working on the Modmail beta. We know there are still many improvements to be done before we bring new Modmail out of beta and release it to all communities. This is something we have slated to work on in 2018. We appreciate your patience as we work to bring you the best possible version of modmail (search, anyone?).
  • Access management, including banning, muting, moderators, and approved submitters.
  • A new report flow for posts and comments that reflects a community’s custom report reasons (same flow as desktop). You’ll notice one thing that’s missing is the open ‘Other’ text fields, which will come in a later iteration.

You’ll also notice some new UI updates, including an account drawer for your profile (which has a sweet shortcut for night mode!) as well as some icon and contrast changes.

BUT WAIT… THERE’S MORE. We’ve updated our iPad app to include all that and to support multitasking as well as the ability to scroll feeds from the edges.

Take 4.0 out for a spin — we hope you like it! We’re working on a lot more to continue improving your native mobile experience, so stay tuned. Please feel free to leave feedback in the comments below. As always, thanks for being a part of the Reddit community.

Anyone else ? I updated my ipad and now AB autocrashes. Guess I’ll try deleting and reinstalling and see of that helps.

So my Alien Blue crashes on my new iPhone Xs. I've been very depressed about it and stopped browsing reddit entirely for a few days.

Then I started looking for alternatives and hated everything I tried. Finally I came across this app and although it's not AB, it seems closer than anything else I've looked at. Still missing the ever-elusive optimized mode for web pages though.

It's called "advanced for reddit". It has these good features:

- night mode

- fairly compact display (but could be much more compact)

- optional forced Reader mode (which does bypass javascript crap and ads, but isn't night mode so far, and has no images)

- preview by pressing on thumbnails (and thumbnails can be put on left or right of the list)

- no ads

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/advanced-for-reddit/id1229529035?mt=8

Wondering what others think of it or if you have found anything closer to AB than this one.

I recently updated to iOS 12 and found that AB wouldn't launch any more. I wanted to retrieve my casual subreddits, and figured out how to do so from AB's preferences files. This requires a Mac.

The rough steps are:

  • back up your iOS device to your Mac using iTunes
  • use iExplorer to explore the backup just created. Under Backup Explorer, copy the file at App/com.reddit.alienbluehd/Library/Preferences/com.reddit.alienbluehd.plist to a directory.
  • Open the plist with an editor that supports binary plists, I used BBEdit. There's a key called subreddit_preferences_<your username>. The value of this key is a base-64 encoded, zlib-compressed binary plist. Copy the data into a separate file, and then remove any spaces/tabs/newlines. All the data needs to be on one line. I used vim for this, it should also be possible with BBEdit.
  • From the command line, un-base64 the file using base64, like base64 -D < (FILE) -o (FILE)_unb64.zlib
  • Un-zlib the file using 'pigz' (available from homebrew), like pigz -cd (FILE)_unb64.zlib > (FILE)_unb64.plist
  • Open (FILE)_unb64.plist with Xcode. The format is a bit wacky (it's from NSKeyedArchiver), but start expanding the items and you'll see the subreddit names.

Sorry there's not many details here, it would be tricky if you're not comfortable with the command-line. I might be able to write a python script to handle all the steps if there's enough demand.

FYI, Alien Blue (ipad version) does not launch on my iPad pro under iOS 12. It’s been this way since early beta, but now that we are at release I have no hope of it coming back.

Seems to be new as of today but I REALLY dislike it and there’s nothing in the settings to change it. What gives?

If i unsub from them they just show back up. I’ve tried deleting them, unsubbing from them, going on to the PC and unsubbing, and nothing works.

Any suggestions? My sub list is cluttered.

I recently destroyed my phone and lost all my data. A critical part of that was losing AlienBlue, because as far as I know, it’s not available on the App Store so I don’t have it on my new phone. Is there any way I can get it back? I really don’t like the Reddit app in comparison, and I’d hate to say goodbye to this app for good.

Something happened and now I don't see the small icons next to each post and I can't find the setting to turn them back on. Please help, I beg of you

Every time I click on a Reddit hosted image all I get is a white screen with the text Not Found. Changing it to optimal doesn't seem to do anything. Anyone found a fix for this?

I have 2.9.10 on my phone, and as of a few minutes ago, I can't load anything through AB. It loads with the official app and browser though. Is this the end?

Edit: it's working again. Looks like it was related to the errors and is resolved now, at least for me.

Is anyone else experiencing problems with Imgur links? Every post on ‘All’ that is an Imgur link gives me the ‘Zoinks!’ error message. All other links seem to work though. It was working fine before I went to bed last night. I’ve cleared my cache and I’m not sure what else I can do.

Alien blue, n I think iPad mini, I cannot download regular Reddit, because my iPad does not support it... N I'm updated as far as iPad will go.....

And I tried to add pictures through the imgur site? And can't get that either. So I'm screwed?

I have to email someone my pictures n have them post it for me, pain in butt.

So I need to save for an updated version of an iPad?

In order to get regular Reddit? N add pictures? Thanks for any help
