This is my very first encounter with a wild tiger and to my great delight it was just one of many encounters in Corbett!
This is a female with two fully grown cubs on her evening prowl which was about marking her territory during our brief encounter. Here she is doing the very familiar cat-scratch – only a very, very much more powerful one than that of the domestic cat. It was followed by the all-important spray of urine high up on the tree trunk behind her.
She did this a couple of times and then decided to disappear into the forest, possibly on her way to stalking spotted deer, sambar or other prey.
One thing I quickly learned from this encounter is how incredibly close the tigers might be to your vehicle – this was shot with a wide-angle lens at 70mm, as it was too close to use my telephoto.
Yet from this point on in my Indian journey I only got better and more amazing captures of this absolutely magnificent creature.
