Release Notes

This download includes Adventure Works sample databases and solutions for SQL Server, SQL Server Data Warehouse, and SQL Server Analysis Services.
  • Adventure Works 2014 sample databases are an upgrade from the 2012 versions.
  • Adventure Works 2014 sample databases also work on SQL Server 2016; however, no specific updates were made to support new features in this version.
  • Adventure Works Internet Sales Tabular sample database and sample solution are at the 1200 compatibility level and will only work on SQL Server Analysis Services 2016 or later. To create an Adventure Works Internet Sales sample solution and database at a lower compatibility level, follow steps in Analysis Services tabular modeling tutorial on MSDN. Select a lower compatibility level when creating the new project in SQL Server Data Tools.

Will this work for sql server 2016?

Was waiting for it since May, Adventure works 2014 has really met my expectations and found it helpful for my classes.Microsoft has made the installation process very simple than its 2012 version. just be aware of this Adventure Works 2014 sample DB is not Adventure Works 2014 AD, usually MSDN test DB is the last one......Be careful. i know this badly......

I tried to install this on sql 2014 and it doesn't work. The bak file was made in some other version of sql and cannot be loaded by sql 2014. The install script was made in sql 2008 and uses data types ("date") that are not supported in sql 2014. Change the datatypes to DATETIME and the script will run. Also note that the default install location of SQL Server is different than what is specified in the script.

I Got Error; Msg 3241, Level 16, State 0, Line 2 The media family on device 'C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Backup\AdventureWorks2014.bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. Msg 3013, Level 16, State 1, Line 2 RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.

For anyone with the message "The media family on device 'blah' is incorrectly formed", the most likely reason is that you're trying to restore a SQL Server 2014 database backup onto an earlier version of SQL Server. Whilst backups are forwardly compatible (which is a good thing), by the nature of development, there's no guarantee that data structures will be backwardly compatible with older versions. Try finding a version of AW that's compatible with your version of SQL Server, or restore it on SQL Server 2014.

AdventureWorksDW database, SSAS Enterprise project, and Internet Sales Tabular project all work fine. I'm using these to test some Business Intelligence stuff so it would help to have the ETL processes for loading the DW database and maybe even some SSRS reports.

It doesn't restore : after selecting the .bak file the info message states that there are no files selected.
