“Unlike Galloway Corbyn is too slippery to say. The trick of his supporters has been to alchemise his slyness into modesty. They have elevated the leader’s personal goodness & placed him in a higher realm above the tainted institutions & processes of liberal democracy.“

“The far left justifies itself by dehumanising migrants. They are no longer people but vectors in a system of production that wants to move resources & people around the world & pawns in a neo-liberal conspiracy that will frustrate the utopia of socialism in one country.”

My take on ’s speech: Pompeo’s remarks in Cairo presented a vision of an American hegemon fully engaged in the Middle East – very retro, as the kids might say. This vision does not easily match the resources President Trump is willing to invest in the region, nor...1/

“current administration inherited a messy foreign policy that‘s arguably responsible for the disaster in Syria. Yet since Trump took office the US has lost further ground to Iran, has alienated allies & has failed to restore relations with critical regional partners like Turkey”

“Coming just weeks after Trump declared a precipitous withdrawal from Syria, leaving its allies in limbo, there was little by way of assurances on whether and how the United States intends to stay the course to forestall an ISIS resurgence and contain Iran’s expansionism”

My thoughts: “in stressing an assertive foreign policy & questioning Russian & Chinese commitment to the region, Pompeo attempted to restore the notion of US leadership & assertiveness that many US allies have missed & yearned for. But there were substantial gaps & shortcomings”

It took a lot more, including the suppression of PKK aligned offices, publications and the banning of pro-PKK gatherings.

Fascinating article on the role that international peacebuilding plays in enabling authoritarianism in post-conflict transitions.

What should have (and could have) been a concerted effort by Turkey & the US to reach a compromise over Syria's north-east could become a full-blown diplomatic crisis after pro-government Daily Sabah accuses Bolton & others of going rogue & conducting a "soft coup against Trump."

Comparison is a stretch, if not flawed entirely: Turkey regularly hosted YPG's political wing, PYD, up until 2014; Turkey has pursued peace with the PKK; YPG is embedded in Turkey's domestic socio-cultural & political structures because of its overlap with the PKK. List goes on.

In the end, Turkey and the US find themselves in a relationship of inter-dependence in a difficult conflict landscape where policy options and entry points for achieving immediate and long-term solutions are not in abundance.

Erdogan's op-ed has generated much controversy but most interesting is the strong emphasis on a Turkish role in overseeing good governance/stabilisation in the east. That's a task Turkey is woefully unprepared for & ill-equipped to undertake - unless it works with the US
