High Court judge Justice Mafusire, in a judgement dated 19 June 2019, ruled that ZBC & Zimpapers acted unconstitutionally during Zimbabwe’s 2018 Elections as they failed to provide a fair opportunity for the presentation of divergent views & dissenting opinions.

The High Court’s recent ruling and findings on the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation & Zimpapers’ biased coverage vindicates and buttresses the incessant calls for the long-overdue transformation of the state-controlled media houses.

When the ITU set up the deadline, they were mainly focused on the ASO deadlines for Television and not radio. As a sector, we really do not know what the situation is as they really did not put the radio sector into consideration-

As the media, do we really know our issues, do we really rally around and make noise about our issues or is it that the profit motive under media houses is overriding our causes?-

What is our role when it comes to the proposed merger of BAZ and POTRAZ as it stands? We currently do not know what the requirements are for the set-up of community radio stations as these have not been made known-

One of the main contestations around community radios in Zimbabwe is the definition of a community radio station. ONe of the more recent discussions coming up is that the government intends to set up the community radio stations themselves-

Some of the reasons behind regurgitation of information from the ZBC, to Star FM, to The Herald, is mainly due to the need to remain sustainable in a harsh socioeconomic environment-

It is at the ZBC where we should be making demands and accountability. The ZBC being a public broadcaster is not a for-profit business but at a practical level, it should be a conduit for information access while being sustainable. Need for a framework for this-

As media stakeholders, we really need to acknowledge some of the realities that ZBC is both a commercial and public broadcaster and we dare say maybe a community broadcaster. We need to ensure that it continues to be a truly public broadcaster-

We believe that the lack of plurality and diversity is restricting freedom of expression. We shouldn't be discussing the issue of licensing in the 21st century. We should be talking about technology & content issues and less about the policy issues-

In countries like Kenya, in order to register or get a license for a community radio station, one of the requirements is approximately Ksh2,000. Why then is Zimbabwe making the process restrictive through expensive licensing fees?-

Independence of new players in the broadcasting space, should they be licensed should be respected and they should be allowed to exercise their right to freedom of expression-
