"Our equipment is so much better than anybody else’s equipment. When you look at our companies, and , the equipment that we make is so far superior. Everybody wants to buy our equipment." Am not sure or would agree... 2/2

Offering an idea of what allies could spend their growing defence budgets on, says: "The United States makes by far the best military equipment in the world. The best jets, the best missiles, the best guns, the best everything. 1/2

OK so defence spending commitment secured by at summit appears to be for allies to go from having national plans to lift spending (move towards 2% of GDP by 2024) to having "credible" national plans to increase expenditure, signals Hmmmmmm

You have to respect . It is amazing how he can continue to be upbeat and positive about the unscripted chaos that was his summit. Helping to keep the show on the road...

BREAK: - asked about threat to allies to hit 2% or US will "do our own thing"- says this has created a "new sense of urgency" among allies to increase defence spending. "We had a very frank and open discussion on burden sharing," he says

Jens Stoltenber [clearly in convince--Nato-is-relevant mode] says: " is a force multiplier for the United States. Despite our differences we are doing more together for our security"

BREAK - allies aside from United States have added $41 billion to their collective defence budgets since came to office, says, attributing urgency to increase spending to Mr Trump's pressure

NOW: gives end of summit briefing - he says it has been a very good session. There were "frank" discussions on burden sharing. "That is what we do among friends and allies. All allies have heard President Trump's message loud and clear"

UPDATE: says allies have pledged to meet 2% of GDP defence spending target within "a very short number of years". So he appears to have been persuaded NATO is worth sticking with, for now, despite January US "do our own thing" threat made at crisis meeting

I asked my source what the reaction was of the 28 other heads of state and government, the source said: "Total stunned silence and then utter panic" 3/3

The US President continued that if the wealthiest economies are not paying 2% by January “we are going to do our own thing” 2/3

This is what I am told told allies: “2% is a joke. 4% is what people should be spending. We are being played for fools. Every single US president has been pushing the point of extra spending since Reagan & they have all been played I am not going to be” 1/3

BREAK: This is from a single, good source: told allies this morning that unless wealthiest economies (read Germany, France, Spain, Italy) hit 2% GDP target by January “we are going to do our own thing” If this is confirmed then it is extraordinary threat

Just had a phone call from a spokesman insisting that there was never a plan for to give a press conference at summit. The fact the timing and location for this phantom presser is on the running order is "obviously a mistake" by Nato

Looks like no one told that - perhaps after failing to come to summit armed with funded plan for or maybe because of chaos - has decided not to hold a press conference & will be en route back to the UK. Don't go to briefing room 12 folk!

BREAK: says spending target remains 2% even though demanded it be doubled to 4%. "Let's start with that (2%)," Nato chief says. "We have a way to go"

A footnote on the graphic says that the other 3 countries that are supposed to hit the 2% this year (Poland, Lithuania & Romania) are still expected to do this, it is just not yet reflected in the figures...
