Malls are typically in the middle, and used to be dominant–with those owning land at the top and retailers interacting with end customers at the bottom. Now retailers are having a hard time and the mall sector has started to consolidate as a result, which favors larger players...

When an industry dies because of the digital transition, it starts with a very long phase during which the smallest and weakest players are the ones dying (or being acquired), thus reinforcing the strongest—and giving the impression that everything is perfectly fine.
