Here's the BBC documentary on Dubai Princess Latifa's attempt to escape her gilded prison and her forcible return. If she was really kidnapped rather than voluntarily fleeing, as UAE gov't claims, why after a few days did it release the alleged kidnappers?

“A family dilemma ....She planned an escape”. Mary Robinson inadvertently admits what happened to Princess Latifa, but seems to think the Princess is best left with the family she tried to flee.

Dear oh dear. This is how the human rights of women are shut down in the Middle East and beyond. How very disappointing from Mary Robinson to offer talking points from the Emirati PR machine as platitudes when we want liberty for Latifa to say what she wants in her own voice

After repeated listening what comes across is how nervous Mary Robinson is. She's tripping over her answers because knows they are unsatisfactory. She's been done up like a kipper and it sounds like she knows it.

Yes it could have been tougher. Who were the "two other people" in the room, for example? If she was "obviously troubled" might that not relate to fact she's being held against her will and sedated like her sister, whose 2002 escape attempt was subject of UK police investigation?

Full Mary Robinson interview with here at 1hr35m. Robinson stutters out the Dubai govt's PR line - was duped into kidnapping herself (??) - and gets snippy when Husain refuses to let her just promote her climate change book.

So a former rights chief meets Sheikha Latifa in the home of the man she risked her life to run away from. She comes away saying “she’s troubled” and regrets it all 🙄. I guess that’s that then. Nothing to see here

I have a question : you have business interests in Dubai, and today's show included a stout defence of Dubai government's role in the kidnapping of a young woman . Were you involved in inviting Mary Robinson on to today's show?

One of many many questions for Mary Robinson to answer as soon as possible - and would be good to hear what the and other professional bodies think. In what way were you "able" to assess the situation? Have you had any formal training in mental health assessment?

Yep. A question you'd hope journalists will be putting to her while they also ask her why she believes Dubai's abusive royal family and not the articulate young woman who attempted to escape from them.

Mary Robinson, you said you would not attend while UK academic was in jail. Why are you now attending even though UAE rights activists like are still in jail? Why the double standard? You're a former High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Who'd have thought it? The liberal arts university that sets up in the surveillance state ends up hoovering up research grants on cybersecurity.
