Not surprised to see this glowing review in the @NYTimes—but super-stoked about it nonetheless!
To all of you: read this book! :) twitter.com/lorigottlieb1/…

Obesity rates and screen time have skyrocketed, net national savings rates have plummeted, and there's an opioid crisis. Is America facing an epidemic decline in self-control? @angeladuckw, David Laibson and I weigh in with a @washingtonpost op-ed: washingtonpost.com/business/2019/…

2/2. I suppose I can see how war (either hot or cold) might be the right way of handling situations of that sort. Still, it does seem like debate would be helpful for convincing third parties, assuming our supreme confidence in the righteousness of our cause is well-placed.

1/2: Ah, I gotcha. It sounds like you're focusing on situations in which we are 100% convinced that we are correct -- and, therefore, that neither we nor third parties have anything to learn from discourse with those who disagree. I hope such situations are extremely rare.

I'm intrigued, Tage. What's the best alternative to debate? I see that the person you retweeted advocates for fighting, but doesn't that produce a might-makes-right situation? And if so, wouldn't debate be better -- wouldn't we prefer a situation in which the best argument wins?

Kudos on the cool paper!
I certainly share your sense of ambivalence about the changes -- the changes are necessary, but they have major costs. Indeed, the costs have long been readily predictable (e.g., this screengrab comes from elifinkel.com/s/2017_FinkelE…). @PaulEastwick pic.twitter.com/wIFcyiFT8J

2/ I do see that you're pursuing gold-standard-level evidence, which is reasonable. I can't speak for others, and I'm not an expert on this research, but I could also see why people would seek to offer guidance based on evidence of a lower standards if it's the best available.

1/ I appreciate the response, Brent. I didn't perceive your questions as an open-minded, intellectually curious effort to engage, but I recognize that Twitter is a tricky medium.

Hey @BrentWRobers. I see you're annoyed, and I don't know the studies well enough to evaluate. But @JonHaidt's tweet struck me as both friendly and conciliatory. He talked about an evolving view. Even if his view wasn't justified in the past, why not engage him on those terms?
