My best guess is that the DPRK is bent out of shape that Trump officials are bragging about bullying the DPRK to agree to denuclearization since their line is that it was the Hwasong-15 test that bullied Trump into agreeing to the summit.

Agreeing to something and then going back on it is *exactly* what opponents to any US-DPRK deal have been warning about, so this hardly helps the case that things are different this time. Eagerly awaiting the KCNA story to see exactly what was said.

It's a mild threat by KCNA standards, but still a threat. More in the "That's a pretty nice summit we've got coming up; would be a shame if anything were to happen to it" vein.

According to some who have dealt extensively with the over the years there are hardliners in the WPK and KPA in Pyongyang who might be intent on sabotaging any diplomatic negotiations they would perceive as imperiling the longevity of the Kim dynasty.

I mean, North Korea signed the 1994 Agreed Framework -- but what they really wanted was the letter from Clinton. From Wit et al, Going Critical and Pollack, No Exit. I can't imagine Kim gives up his summit.

This, though, would surprise me. I think Kim wants that photo with the President of the United States, paying tribute to him, for the front page of the Rodong Sinmun.

Three possibilities: 1) looking for more concessions before summit; 2) know US is serious about quick PVID; 3) Kim thinks Xi will eventually relax NK sanctions. Kim is using his father's playbook, but Trump is using a different U.S. approach. Dangerous gamble for Kim.

North Korea strongly complains about these drills every year, calling them a rehearsal for invasion. But South Korea's government said Kim had signaled acceptance while trying to build better relations. This was two months ago:
