Call for Testing: WordPress for iOS 6.6

The WordPress for iOS 6.6 beta will be available for testing on TestFlight soon. Not part of the beta program yet? Please sign up for our TestFlight program to request to join as a beta tester.

    What’s New

    1. Animated GIFs in Blog Posts List: The Blog Posts list (on the My Sites tab) now supports animated GIFs.
      • Add an animated GIF as the featured image or the only image in a blog post. Save or publish the post, and view the post in your Blog Posts list. The image should animate.
      • Try adding very large GIFs, or multiple GIFs to a post, and let us know if anything unexpected happens (such as the app slowing down or crashing).
    2. Backend Changes to Notifications: Notifications got revamped under the hood (backend changes). There shouldn’t be any noticeable changes, but please pay attention to any bugs with notifications in this version.

    Additional Testing

In addition to testing new features and changes, as beta testers we can give feedback about the flow through the WordPress app. (Not sure what I mean? Check out how the WordPress Flow team tests and what we mean by flow.)

Here are some things to consider or try out in this release:

    • Take a screenshot of each step as you test the animated GIFs and/or notifications above. Upload your screenshots (you can create a gallery on Cloudup) and share them in a comment here.
    • Describe how the process makes you feel and whether you were able to finish the entire task or process you started.
    • When you finish the process (posting/viewing your animated GIF or checking your notifications), what do you want to do next? Is there a clear path to continue on to your next task?

    Bugs & Feedback

Did you find a bug or come up with a feature request while testing? You can discuss it here, report it using the TestFlight feedback link, or head straight to the iOS Github repository and open a new issue.

    Thanks for testing!

I tested out the animated GIFs on an iPad Air 2 running 9.3.1 and didn’t see any problems. Tried large GIFs and 20+ posts in a row with GIFs, and it scrolled with no issue. A single post with a ton of GIFs looked fine in the Blog Posts list, but was slow to load the individual page (unsurprisingly). But once loaded it behaved fine.

Is it on the radar to have this feature copied over to the Reader display too? That was the only problem I noticed, the disconnect between what I see in Blog Posts and what I see in Reader.

      • Rachel 10:26 am on October 13, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Yep, issue 6062 is to add animated GIF support to the Reader, too. I also felt that disconnect and look forward to that enhancement. 🙂

I ran through some notifications tests, and everything seems to work, but interacting with the actions on the notification left a little to be desired. This may not be new behavior in this release, but just something I haven’t tested before.

Clicking either Approve or Like on a notification gives no indication of success or failure…I had to then go open the app to verify that it actually happened. This is in contrast to Android, where it opens the app regardless (and ticket 4602 should hopefully change that to just give a success/failure message instead).

Clicking Reply on a notification opened the app to the notification, but I still had to click Reply again once in the app to open the keyboard. – https://cloudup.com/cnDhWDK7p3s

Let me know if I should create GitHub issues for these.

    • Alister Scott 2:49 am on October 13, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I tested both animated GIFs in blog posts list and also the notifications. I will mimic what @hoverduck says about showing these in The Reader would be great.

The only issue I found is pretty minor: if you have a published post with an animated gif in the body it shows the animated gif correctly in the posts list until you edit it and remove the image, where it then remains in the posts list. I tried pulling down to refresh and it still showed for me.

    • Lance Willett 5:00 pm on October 13, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

GIFs work well in posts list.

I noticed a minor bug in Comments, though — and reported on an existing GitHub issue for “Comments: Extra HTML tags added after adding or editing comments.”

I’m stuck on 6.5. TestFlight shows WP as unavailable. I’d include a screenshot, but commenting here from iOS safari doesn’t support uploads.

Now my 6.5 TestFlight install crashes upon open. The posts list shows briefly before crash.

I removed the app. TestFlight still shows unavailable.

        Blocked.

Gifs inserted with Reboard and Giphy Keys don’t animate.

      • Rachel 2:11 pm on October 17, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I think this has to do with how images are added to posts. I tested by adding GIFs from the Giphy app as well as using Giphy Keys, and here’s what I found:

        • Using the Share icon (and share extension) to share a GIF from the Giphy app to WordPress added a gallery with a still image instead of a GIF.
        • Copying the GIF from the Giphy app or Giphy Keys and pasting it into the editor added a still image instead of a GIF.
        • Saving the GIF from the Giphy app to my device and then uploading it to WordPress from my device added the GIF as expected.

So it looks like we’ll need to support sharing/pasting GIFs to make this work. I added a comment to this issue about that: https://github.com/wordpress-mobile/WordPress-iOS/issues/2752

    • Ryan Boren 1:24 pm on October 17, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Featured images, both still and animated, remain in the posts list after removal.

    • designsimply 7:27 pm on October 17, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I tested adding an animated gif (567 KB) to a post as a featured image using Safari iOS 10.0.2 on an iPhone 6S and didn’t find into any problems with animated gifs.

Call for Testing: WordPress for Android 6.0

WordPress for Android version 6.0-rc-1 has been released in the Google Play Store. You can join the beta from the Google Play Store on your device (under “Become a beta tester”), and comment here or join the Google Plus beta community for more discussion with other testers.

    New Feature:

    Contextual actions on push notifications

Push notifications for comments now have quick actions based on the context. Test it out by triggering new comment notifications on your site(s), and make sure the correct quick actions appear and work as expected.

    1. Moderated comments: If your site requires approval for a comment to be published, the push notification will display REPLY and APPROVE quick actions. Tapping on APPROVE will approve the comment, mark the APPROVE action in color, and show you the comment detail.
      moderated comment push notification
    2. Non-moderated comments: If your site does not require approval for a comment to be published, the push notification will display REPLY and LIKE quick actions. Tapping on LIKE will like the comment, mark the LIKE action in color, and show you the comment detail.
      non-moderated comment push notification

    Additional Testing:

In addition to testing new features, as beta testers we can give feedback about the flow through the WordPress app. (Not sure what I mean? Check out how the WordPress Flow team tests and what we mean by flow.)

Here are some things to consider or try out in this release:

    • Take a screenshot of each step as you test the new push notifications above. Upload your screenshots (you can create a gallery on Cloudup) and share them in a comment here.
    • After you do the quick action in the push notification, where does it take you? Is that what you expected? Describe how the process makes you feel and whether you were able to finish the entire task or process you started.
    • Is there anything missing from the notification itself, or in the steps that follow, that would make this flow make more sense or work better for you?
    • When you finish approving, replying to, or liking the comment, what do you want to do next? Is there a clear path to continue on to your next task?

    Bugs & Feedback

Did you find a bug or come up with a feature request while testing? Did you try the additional flow testing? You can discuss it here, report it using the “Enter feedback about the app” form in the Google Play Store, or head straight to the Android Github repository and open a new issue.

I’m really happy to see these new notification features on their way in. It’s always felt like a slightly missing part of my workflow on mobile. But I did have a couple problems, and a few thoughts/suggestions

In one case where a comment was pending moderation I still got the “Like” option on the notification, rather than the “Approve”. Clicking “Like” then opened the app with an error saying “Unable to open notification”. I wasn’t able to reproduce the problem, but I wrote Issue 4601 to document it in case others see the same thing.

As for the way the flow works, I wish that clicking Like wouldn’t open the notification in the app. I’d rather just get a toast message indicating success/failure rather than having the whole app open up and interrupt whatever else I’m doing. This can be especially jarring when I interact with the notification from my Android Wear watch, since then the next time I unlock my phone it’s in a different app from where I left it. Issue 4602.

I’m disappointed that I still can’t reply to the notification from my watch, but 4032 is still open for that. And 4401 will give better Android 7.0 support as well.

Overall, just having the comment text in the notification body is a huge improvement!

      • Rachel 12:13 pm on October 5, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I completely agree with your assessment of the “Like” behavior. After I clicked Like, the app opened, I saw the comment and Like, and my immediate thought was, “Ok, what now?” I didn’t feel like there was any reason for me to be taken there. A less intrusive success message would definitely make sense to me.

I also noticed that the action icons (e.g. checkmark for Approve, star for Like) didn’t appear for me. Not sure if that’s expected on Android 7.0 so I reported it in Issue 4605.

        • hoverduck 2:29 pm on October 5, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I replied on the GitHub ticket with more info, but the short answer is that the action icons are no longer shown on Android 7.0 for standard notifications

    • Brandon Kraft 1:55 pm on October 5, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I saw the same issue as @srstancil with an in-moderation comment from a self-hosted site with Jetpack gave me “Reply” and “Like” options.

On self-hosted sites, “Like” shouldn’t be an option at all since it doesn’t exist in Core and Jetpack does not have Comment Likes able to be activated at this time.

      • Rachel 2:06 pm on October 12, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Good point about self-hosted sites. Self-hosted sites should only generate notifications if they are using Jetpack (unless I’m mistaken about that, in which case please correct me), so it should only be an issue for Jetpack-connected sites.

We’ve been showing “like” as an option for comments on Jetpack sites on the notifications tab, too, so we’ll need to address this both on the notifications tab and in push notifications. I opened an issue about that here:

        https://github.com/wordpress-mobile/WordPress-Android/issues/4642

    • Brandon Kraft 1:57 pm on October 5, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Clicking Reply took me to the app with the “Unable to open notification” too, but the notification loaded behind the error after a quick moment. It feels like the notifications aren’t actually synced in-app until it is open, or at least not as quickly as the push notification itself comes in. I’ve seen this type of thing before with other types of push notifs.

Tested things with Nexus 5 (Android 6.0.1) and WP app version alpha-23. Didn’t find anything out of place — also did some posting, uploading, Reader actions, commenting, and such in the app to try to break things.

Visual record here of trying out the comment notifications: https://cloudup.com/c_934OJiVF4

I went through some scenarios on my Samsung Galaxy Tab A (Android 5.0.2)

Initially I couldn’t work out how to see the action buttons, but I had to pull down on the notifications, this is probably just a lack of understanding of Android on my behalf.

Once I found these actions they worked without issue. They opened up the comment and showed it as approved or liked. I guess this is what I was expecting: perhaps I didn’t even need to open the app but this probably isn’t possible as the app needs to do the action, so I’m happy with what it did.

Some screenshots from my tab: https://cloudup.com/cBQ2AP4MAX4

    • Gaurav Pareek 12:45 pm on October 6, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I tested this, and if I sometimes get ‘Like’ and ‘Reply’ for unapproved comments.

After some testing, I found that this happens if I manually ‘Force Stop’ the app, or swipe it away from Recents, or restart my phone. Once I have opened up the app, the notifications have the correct actions for unapproved comments.

      I tested with WPAndroid 6.0-rc-1 on a Samsung Galaxy Tab4 (SM-T330NU) Android 5.1.1.

Like Alister, I had trouble figuring out how to find the actions since they didn’t show by default on the tablet. Fair warning: I am a new Android user.

Here’s how they look at first on the Galaxy Tab4:

Here’s how they look if you tap on the specific notification and drag down a little:

    • designsimply 4:35 pm on October 7, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

At first, I found the main notifications screen confusing because I didn’t understand that a super light gray background meant the comment had not been viewed direction in notifications (unread) and a colored comment icon meant the comment was still unapproved. Those two things are strange to me, gray background means unread but gray icon means approved.

      See more screenshots at https://cloudup.com/cD20xBdGLH4

    • designsimply 4:39 pm on October 7, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

When I tapped “REPLY” on the push notification, I expected the keyboard to open but it didn’t (WPAndroid 6.0-rc-1 on Galaxy Tab4 & Android 5.1.1). It took me a minute to figure out that I had to tap at the far bottom left to trigger the keyboard to start writing a reply.

Aside: I didn’t expect to see html tags after tapping the “Edit comments” button.

Call for Testing: WordPress for iOS 6.5

The WordPress for iOS 6.5 beta will be available for testing on TestFlight soon. Not part of the beta program yet? Please sign up for our TestFlight program to request to join as a beta tester.

    New Features

    1. Reader Navigation: The Reader navigation has a new design to match the web Reader. You can also browse the sites you follow in the new “Manage Sites” section in your Followed Sites list.
    2. Updated Editor Toolbar: The editor’s top toolbar was cleaned up to make it less crowded. Instead of a Preview link, settings cog icon, and Post link, you’ll now see the Post link and a “more” (ellipsis) menu.

    Additional Changes

    1. iPad updates: If you have an iPad, you’ll see some updates such as a consistent layout throughout the app, and new inline search bars (matching the default iOS search behavior). To test:
      • Explore the app on an iPad and note any inconsistencies or odd behavior with the layout between screens.
      • Try out the search bars (such as the blog selector search).
      • Bonus: Rotate between portrait and landscape views as you go.
    2. Notifications: The Notifications stack got a revamp — this is a behind-the-scenes update, so hopefully you won’t see any changes. To test, trigger a variety of notifications, open and interact with them, and report any odd behavior or bugs you see.

    Bugs & Feedback

Did you find a bug or come up with a feature request while testing? You can discuss it here, report it using the TestFlight feedback link, or head straight to the iOS Github repository and open a new issue.

I was trying out the new reader navigation and found some issues:

      • If you start to add a tag and then cancel, you get an error. Already reported: 5908
      • The same error occurs if you enter invalid characters (a space, symbols). Reported it as a comment on the above issue.
      • Trying to add a tag with non-Latin characters returns a different error. Reported: 5927

Tested on iPhone 6, iOS 9.3.5, WPiOS 6.5.0.20160826.

    • Hafiz Rahman 1:38 am on August 30, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

The new Reader navigation removes a feature that I use every day.

I usually open Reader in the morning to catch up with sites I follow, and usually there are a lot of new posts to read. My screen normally looks like this after refreshing the Reader (note the “Load more posts” button):

      https://cloudup.com/cNWlx7hnFXe

Previously, I would tap the Reader button/tab at the bottom, and it would auto-scroll the list to the top, to show the latest posts. I did that so I could read from newest to oldest, similar to how I’m used to the timelines on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and so on.

In this version, tapping the Reader tab brings me to the main Reader view again: https://cloudup.com/iz8hGz-AQ_B

I think the Reader tab at the bottom should never bring the user to the previous screen. The back button at top left is there for this functionality. Tapping the Reader tab when the tab is already opened should behave as previously, scrolling to top.

      • Rachel 12:24 pm on August 30, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Interesting! Thanks for the report. The new behavior is consistent with how the bottom navigation buttons work on other tabs — for example, tapping the My Sites button twice moves you back to the site list.

You can still tap the status bar (at the very top of the screen) to scroll up to the top, and I’ve opened an issue to ask about the Reader button in the bottom navigation bar here: https://github.com/wordpress-mobile/WordPress-iOS/issues/5933

I don’t have an iPad to test the iPad layout changes with, but I did notice an issue on my iPhone 6 that might be related to the iPad layout changes:

Under My Sites > Blog Posts, I sometimes see the links “Edit,” “View,” and “More” under my posts, but other times I see all four links (“Edit,” “View,” “Stats,” “Trash”) side by side under the post. This is expected behavior when the phone is landscape, but I’m seeing it after I rotate from landscape back to portrait orientation. Reported here: 5941

I have done some testing on both iPad and iPhone. With the new “Manage Sites” screen I noticed it took about 10 seconds to load for me, and during this time I saw a message saying “No Sites”

      https://cloudup.com/cG6VOekI7dx

This made me slightly worried until they did appear – could we show a loading icon or something else?

    • Alister Scott 6:09 am on September 6, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

I was also thinking “Managed Sites” sounds like managing your own sites, should it be something like “Manage Followed Sites”?

    • Lance Willett 5:10 pm on September 6, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

      1. Reader Navigation, for add/remove/view tags

I can’t seem to remove a tag when no posts match it. Testing with :( as a tag — it has no posts, and I can’t see the header to unfollow it. Note: I can’t remove with desktop wpcalypso either — so not specific to iOS.

This is probably old behavior; on a new user account or with new “nonsense” tags — they can’t be added, so this isn’t an issue in those cases.

      2. Updated Editor Toolbar

I was able to crash the app in iPad using these steps:

      1. Go to My Sites, select a site
      2. Go to Blog Posts list
      3. Click an already published post, enter editor view by clicking the post
      4. In top editor toolbar, click … then Preview
      5. In preview, click the “sharing” icon (box with arrow in the top of it) — I’d expect this to open an iOS sharing menu
      6. Crash :/

I sent the report in from the WP Internal app. I can repeat this each time I do the same steps.

Call for Testing: WordPress for Android 5.8

WordPress for Android version 5.8-rc-1 has been released in the Google Play Store. You can join the beta from the Google Play Store on your device (under “Become a beta tester”), and join the Google Plus beta community for more discussion with other testers.

    New Features:

    1. Synchronized read notifications: Push notifications will now be synchronized across your devices, and automatically dismissed if you read the notification on another device. To test, make sure push notifications are enabled, trigger one or more notifications, and then read those notifications in a web browser or on another device. They should be dismissed as you read them elsewhere.
    2. Invite Followers/Viewers: You can now invite followers and viewers to your site in People Management (WordPress.com sites only). To test, make sure you can invite followers (on public sites) or viewers (on private sites), and that invitations to become a user on the site still work as expected.

    Additional Changes:

    • Improved offline messaging: A “no connection” message now appears if you aren’t connected to a network in these parts of the app:
      • Plans
      • Editor > Post Settings > Select categories
      • Editor > Post Settings > Add category
      • Me > My Profile
    • Reader tweaks: There are a number of small tweaks to the Reader’s design and behavior, including how the Follow button and Likes appear. Let us know if you have any confusion or trouble following blogs and liking posts!

    Bugs & Feedback

Did you find a bug or come up with a feature request while testing? You can discuss it here, report it using the “Enter feedback about the app” form in the Google Play Store, or head straight to the Android Github repository and open a new issue.

Just to make sure I’m understanding correctly…with the new synced notifications feature, you’re saying that the Android system notification should be dismissed when it’s read from another device, right? Or is it just that the notification internal to the WordPress app will be acknowledged across devices? (i.e. the ‘unread’ badge disappears from the bell icon on the upper right of the app)

If it’s supposed to be the latter, then it’s working fine. But if it’s the former, then it’s not working for me using Android 6.0.1 on a Nexus 6P

      • Rachel 9:37 pm on August 24, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

It’s the former — the Android system notification should be dismissed when it’s read from another device. (The original enhancement description is in issue 1603 and the pull request is PR 4493, for reference.) I haven’t tested this yet so I’ll take a closer look at it tomorrow.

      • Rachel 11:48 am on August 25, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

Thanks for bringing this up. Due to issue 4503 the push notification syncing won’t work correctly on alpha/beta versions. That’s being worked on, but for now we’ll have to hold off on testing that feature.

          Ah, gotcha. Thanks.

          Testing invitations:

          1) On the actual invitation page, the styling on the Role selector is misleading…there’s nothing to indicate that it’s a dropdown, it looks like it’s hardcoded to the preset value. Issue 4510
          2) In one case I was able to invite an existing user (a Contributor, I think) as an Administrator, and it actually upgraded them instead of telling me that they were already a member…but I haven’t been able to reproduce it, so maybe I just imagined it. But I’m reporting it here just in case somebody else sees the same thing and we can try to narrow it down.

I’ll test the offline messaging this afternoon and report my findings on that separately.

    • Rachel 2:06 pm on August 25, 2016 Permalink | Log in to Reply

      I tested follower/viewer invites:

      • Follower showed up on public sites and Viewer showed up on private sites, as expected. I also confirmed they appear in the same order (Follower/Viewer at the top of the list of Roles) as they do in Calypso.
      • I confirmed that if I try to send a follower invite to someone who already follows the site, I get the expected error message: “[username]: Already following”
      • I confirmed that if I try to invite an existing member/viewer of the site as a follower/viewer, I get the expected error message: “There’s already a member with username [username]”
      • I confirmed that I can invite a non-viewer follower (i.e. someone who followed a site before it became private) to become a viewer on a private site.
      • I confirmed that follower/viewer invites are sent correctly to the invited users.

I came across a couple confusing points about invite errors, but those are already tracked in issue 4358 and 4351.

Tested on Nexus 9, Android 6.0.1, WPAndroid alpha-20.

I tested the improved offline messaging and confirmed that when I’m offline I get appropriate offline error messages on the screen mentioned above: https://cloudup.com/c_HX0fsUvfI

The only unclear message I saw was if I had an internet connection when I started creating a new category, and lost it before I finished. In that case, after I tried adding the category I got a generic “Adding category failed” error.

      • Found an error where a user role from a user in Team would show up as the role of a viewer who does not have a user role, when toggling from Team > Followers > Viewers. Reported here in 4506.

Tested on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Android 6.0.1, WPAndroid alpha-20.

      I tested improved offline messaging:

      • could not see any offline message when I was in Plans, Profile, or Edit categories when the phone was in airplane mode, although if I went back to the site dashboard I’d see the no connection warning at the bottom, but no indication in the above three areas: https://cloudup.com/c0fYKpJPbRF

      My Profile
      1) From site dashboard, put phone on airplane mode.
      2) After seeing the yellow no connection error at the bottom, I navigated to My Profile, where the yellow error bar disappeared. Edits to the profile don’t save, but there’s also no indication that I’m offline.

      Categories
      1) From site dashboard, put phone on airplane mode. Confirm yellow no connection message.
      2) Go to Posts > Posts Settings > Select Categories.
      3) Unable to add any more categories, but also unable to see any no connection message.

      Plans
      1) Start on Plans with internet connection.
      2) Disable internet connection.
      3) No indication that I’m now offline, I go back to the site dashboard, where I immediately see the yellow no connection bar at the bottom.

Tested on Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Android 6.0.1, WPAndroid alpha-20.

The yellow “No connection” banner at the bottom of the screen doesn’t appear on all screens. (I believe it only appears on the 4 main tabs in the app.) On most screens, you’ll see a toast message indicating the connection error — such as when you try to save changes to your profile.

In any case, I’ve reopened issue 4410 to ask about this behavior and the other issue I reported above. Thanks for reporting it!

You’re welcome! I should have worded it better, I meant to say that there was no indication of no connection happening at all, no toast message or yellow bar, even when I was trying to save/make changes. The only way I knew I was offline was that nothing happened whenever I tried to save changes.

Reader – overall the changes look good, but I came across a bug with the Discover list not refreshing correctly – 4513

Offline messaging – I didn’t find any issues not already noted by others in this thread.

I tested adding a viewer to a private site and confirmed that the viewer showed up as expected. (See visual record.)

I tested the Reader: I mostly didn’t have any trouble, but I did see that post headers (above each post) on post lists were sometimes missing. Reported in 4517

    New Features

    1. You can copy an image on your device and paste it into the visual editor. A couple notes:
      • This currently only works with one image at a time
      • You can test it by copying images from different sources (e.g. Photos app or Safari), and pasting them into new or existing posts or pages
    2. The Create Account flow got some updates under the hood. To test, log out (Disconnect from WordPress.com on the account screen) and create a new account — try some unusual input and let us know if something breaks!

    4. Your Gravatar can be edited by tapping on the Gravatar on the Me (account) screen.

Call for Testing: WordPress for iOS 6.2

The WordPress for iOS 6.2 beta is available for testing on TestFlight! Not part of the beta program yet? Please sign up for our TestFlight program to request to join as a beta tester.

    New Feature

iOS Share Extension: You can share (text and URLs only, for now) from other apps to WordPress.com and Jetpack-connected sites.

While in another app, use the iOS sharing option to share text and/or URLs to a WordPress.com or Jetpack-connected site. A few notes for this first iteration:

    • WordPress is available in the sharing menu in apps that provide text and URLs.
    • Post status can be publish or draft.
    • Site picker shows list of sites you can post to via WordPress.com (including Jetpack).
    • Text is split between the subject and body of post if it’s multi-line. (The first line of text is automatically the post subject.)

Future features will include support for media (images, video), better caching of site lists, remembering last used post status and site. The goal is to eventually support sharing to all self-hosted sites, as well, but we aren’t there yet.
