Only a moral society is a free society. But a society is not an object or thing. A society is a collective term like team, or band, or club. It is the members of a society (or team, or band, or club) that [Read story]
Thank you, Marco. I especially appreciate it comming from you.
Love your ‘bio’ Randy. Just right.
Hi John,
The phrase, “moral society,” is only a rhetorical device, not a concept that actually names anything. There will never be a moral society, as I described it, and there never will be a free society. Since you have not described what you mean by a free society, if it is similar to what most libertarians mean by a, “free society,” it would hardly be a moral society.
A society consisting of immoral individuals can never be free. Freedom does those who have no idea how live their lives any good. If you could somehow magically make a society, such as any that exist today, free, that freedom would be gone in short order.
As I said, the kind of society any society is, is determined by the kind of individuals that make up that society. A society of individuals that have no use for freedom, i.e., immoral individuals, will never be free.
The thing I think you misunderstand is that a moral individualist will be moral and free in any society, and never has to wait for some social, political, or libertarian program to provide his freedom. Societies aren’t free. Only individuals are free. Freedom like ethics or morality only pertains to individuals.
That’s my view. It doesn’t have to yours. Appreciate the comment.
Randy
Talk about striking at the root! Thanks. It goes well with “Resist Not Evil” by Clarence Darrow and “The Ethics of Dynamite” etc. by Auberon Herbert.
Hi Wayne,
Thank you for the comparisons. Darrow was a brilliant lawyer and it is certainly flattering to be compared to him in any way. I’m not sure either Darrow or Herbert would agree totally with me, but I can see how the basic principles I addressed would work out in their own views, especially Darrow’s opposition to retributive justice with which I totally agree.

Thank you for the “Apreciates”! If anyone has any questions or suggestions please let me know. I plan on making more of these for other destinations in Mexico.
I’m sorry Michael but I have to disagree with your characterization of Acapulco as a good place for expats to consider. In fact, I would say that at this time Acapulco is one of the worst places to visit, especially for people who have never experienced Latin America before. This is not a hugely subjective point of view as Acapulco is ranked as the 4th most dangerous city in the world according to murders per capita http://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/violent-cities-acapulco-4th-world/.
Tons of people are killed and dismembered on a weekly basis. http://www.lorealdeguerrero.org/
The only expats that are relocating to Acapulco are idiots that continue to drink the TDV cool-aid despite the fact that everything having to do with the “organization” has been exposed as a failure at best.
It is irresponsible to tempt people to leave behind their former lives on the false idea that Acapulco is paradise. It is also complete bullshit to say that Acapulco is some sort of free-market economy as it is literally crawling with military, federal, state, municipal and local police as well as cartels all fighting for power. Property right are horrible and there is no justice system to speak of.
Hi James. Thank you for your comments! Newspapers will always write about violence because it sells! Even you can find articles about a city like San Miguel (http://periodicocorreo.com.mx/critica-comunidad-violencia-en-san-miguel/ and http://www.jornada.unam.mx/2014/03/18/estados/031n1est as examples of news reporting crime waves of violence and insecurity in San Miguel) which of course there is crime, but I consider San Miguel a safe place.
Now, yes there is crime in Acapulco, but most is related to drug cartels that are fighting, but turists are safe here. I know you have lived here (and I don’t remember you ever feeling unsafe but I might be wrong) but I have lived here for 16 years and have not had any major problems.
As for the politics of TDV that is not for me to judge, this article is based on my 16 years of experience and friendships and is directed at anyone who is interested in Acapulco, I am not mentioning anything about politics nor do I claim that Acapulco has a free-market economy, but it is still way easier to do business here than in the US or Europe. You will see a lot of military (Acapulco has both a naval and military base) and police on the main strip especially, but you will never see them do anything. Not sure where you get the information about property rights and the justice system.. it is the same in the whoe of Mexico.
@borderless
yeah I wouldn’t say Acapulco is the best place in Latin America, there are a lot better choices even in Mexico like the Oaxaca coast.
Hi Kevin, thank you for your comment! Have you lived in Acapulco before?
Not sure if it’s safe or not but I think I’d like the temperatures!
It is very hot in the summer, but right now it is really nice. For turists and people living a normal life it is safe.
Michael, I have to completely agree with James’ comment above. I know James has lived in Mexico (SMA); I am not sure if he still living there. He is certainly familiar with living in Mexico. I have to conclude that Jeff Berwick is once again scamming people with his call to move to Acapulco. I wouldn’t care that much except when this falls apart, Berwick will once again smear the liberty community (as he has with Gault’s Galch and his TDV passport scam). Berwick makes wild claims that almost make Acapulco sound like Voluntaryist heaven . It is not as James already well stated above. Unfortunately (in my opinion), I have a friend who is following the Berwick siren call and picking up on a whim and moving to Acapulco. I don’t believe he carefully researched his decision and I don’t want to warn him as he has already made-up his mind and who knows, maybe it’s the right decision for him. But people, do a little due diligence on Berwick and on Acapulco!! Just google “is acapulco safe to visit” and you will find information from reliable sources that it definitely is not. (Don’t misunderstand me, I travel all over Mexico – think most of it is safe – just not Acapulco.) Ummm, the 4th highest per capita murder rate in the world, yes, world. Then read about Berwick, especially his latest scam that he has now claimed no part of, i.e., the TDV passport scam. Finally, I would note that your article, Michael, has a glaring error that, for me, suggests that you wrote this article without any real authority for what you say and simply to capture the unwary or whatever personal motive you have. A humid climate is NOT where someone with arthritis wants to live as it exacerbates the pain by swelling the joints. You got it backwards-people with arthritis flock to dry climates such as Arizona.
