Leo Baeck College was founded 60 YEARS ago in 1956 by German refugees to the UK to train rabbis and educators, to promote the study of Judaism in a spirit of reverence for Jewish tradition combined with scholarly enquiry and academic freedom, to advance mutual understanding and respect within the Jewish people and amongst religions, cultures and peoples of the world.
Leo Baeck College Library began in 1956 with a book collection from the Archival Depot Offenbach and the Hochschule in Berlin and grew by bequests from rabbis and scholars, containing today many unique items and sources in various European languages in addition to the latest publications for class use. It also contains a Jewish Teacher's Resource Centre Library. Today the library contains about 60.000 items ranging from the 16th century to today's latest resources. On the history of the library see e.G. European Judaism 41,2 (Autumn 2008), pages 5-17,32-33,and 67-70.
