Deprecation of Tracksets in Spotify Play Button

May 22nd, 2017 by José M. Pérez

We are removing the functionality to embed tracksets using the Spotify Play Button on July 15th 2017.

The Spotify Play Button allows for embedding tracks, albums, artists and playlists. It can also embed a list of tracks passed as a parameter, which was useful to create a dynamic playlist. These lists of tracks are not supported in the Spotify clients, which default to showing a view for a single track, instead of the list.

We recommend that you use Spotify Play Buttons for playlists instead. With the Web API you can create playlists dynamically and get the benefits of being fully integrated with all Spotify clients. This means users will be able to search for your playlists and subscribe to them.

If you have any questions or need support, feel free to contact us on @SpotifyPlatform.

New Endpoints (Beta): Web API Connect

April 10th, 2017 by Hugh Rawlinson

Today we’re delighted to announce the beta release of Web API Connect – a set of API endpoints for interfacing with Spotify Connect. The endpoints provide control to (with the permission of the user)

and more.

A full list of all the new endpoints can be found in our Web API Connect reference.

Please note that while we’re very excited to release these endpoints, they are in a beta state. This means that while we encourage you to build with them, a situation may arise where we need to disable some or all of the functionality and/or change how they work without prior notice.

As always, please report any issues via our GitHub issue tracker. Happy hacking!

New Endpoint: Recently Played Tracks

March 1st, 2017 by Hugh Rawlinson

Today we’re proud to launch a new Web API endpoint: Get a User’s Recently Played Tracks. With the user’s permission, you can now retrieve up to 50 of their most recently played tracks (excluding tracks played during a private session) as well as whether it was part of an album, playlist or artist listening context. Full documentation including restrictions, which scopes are necessary, and how to authenticate can be found here.

It has been a regular request on our community issue tracker, and we are excited to see what you build with it. Happy Hacking!

Removing Unauthenticated calls to the Web API

January 27th, 2017 by Hugh Rawlinson

On 29th May 2017 the /search /tracks /albums /artists and /users (and related) endpoints will start requiring an access token, bringing them in-line with all other Web API endpoints. A detailed overview of the changes can be found here.

Back in 2014 when we launched the current version of the Spotify Web APIs, we introduced new functionality and replaced two old web services: search and lookup.

As the old web services didn’t support OAuth, we wanted to ease the initial transition for users by allowing unauthenticated consumption of the equivalent endpoints in the new API. Now we’re in 2017, Spotify’s Web API has greatly expanded and a vast majority of endpoints already require authentication. By authenticating you also gain improved rate limits and get access to our automated insights dashboards, which provide statistics on your API consumption and users who authenticate with your application.

The affected endpoints will accept all forms of authentication, including client credentials. As before all endpoints can be tried out live before writing any code via our interactive API console.

We understand that this update may create some work for you, so we want to ensure you have plenty of time to make the necessary updates to any outstanding unauthenticated requests. We’ve also created a guide to the technical changes you may need to make.

Because the calls are unauthenticated we aren’t able to reach out to individuals. If you need help please do contact us via Twitter, GitHub or StackOverflow (tag Spotify).

Statistics and Insights for your Web API apps

September 26th, 2016 by José M. Pérez

Part of maintaining a large scale API is ensuring we are able to properly monitor how our product is consumed both globally, and on a per-app basis. Over time this information has proven invaluable when working with partners to optimise their experiences, and we’ve spent some time creating internal tooling to visualise that data for fast and easy insights.

We have just launched a new feature in the “My Applications” section of the Developer Site giving everyone those same insights into how your application is consuming the Spotify Web API, how engaged your users are, and where in the world they are located.

My Applications - Statistics

To view your insights, navigate to your app in the My Applications” section and click on the new “Statistics” section. We look forward to your feedback – tweet us at @SpotifyPlatform.
