Nature notes
On icy mornings, small birds protect themselves against the cold by puffing out their feathers, and round-shaped birds like robins especially can look very fat. Otherwise they try to live normally, but blackbirds and thrushes find it much more difficult when the ground is frozen hard and they cannot get at earthworms. They scuffle about in the dead leaves under hedges and bushes in search of beetles and other small creatures, or quarrel with each over ivy and mistletoe berries. Bird feeders become more crowded, and water that is deliberately kept unfrozen in a garden is very welcome to them. On frozen lakes, ducks seek any unfrozen water under overhanging trees, but some of them, such as teals, are quick to fly off elsewhere in search of it. Coots join moorhens on the banks. Crows and magpies walk out on to the ice for food that was formerly floating in the water. Herons and kingfishers will often go down to the sea.
