We are delighted to announce Dan Freed, a Professor at University of Texas at Austin, as the Henri Poincaré Distinguished Visiting Professor in the Mathematics Department this fall. The Henri Poincaré Distinguished Visiting Professorship generously funded by an endowment to the Mathematics Department to bring worldly renowned distinguished lecturers to Stanford University.

Professors Emmanuel Candès and Kannan Soundararajan as well as Consulting Professor David Hoffman have been named 2018 Fellows of the American Mathematical Society (AMS). Candès was named for his contributions to the field of compressed sensing, and to multiscale analysis, statistics, and matrix completion; Soundararajan for contributions to analytic number theory and Hoffman for contributions to differential geometry, particularly minimal surface theory, and for pioneering the use of computer graphics as an aid to research.

Congratulations to Cédric De Groote who has been selected as a Ric Weiland Graduate Fellow in the Humanities & Sciences. These awards are made to outstanding doctoral candidates in the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and statistics. Weiland Fellows receive grants for field work, conference travel, books, and other research needs. In addition, semi-annual gatherings bring together Weiland-supported faculty and students across campus.

On Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 3pm the Stanford University Mathematics Department and the Mathematics Research Center hosted a memorial in Professor Maryam Mirzakhani’s honor. The memorial featured remembrances from family and friends, including some of Maryam’s mathematical colleagues, as well as visual and musical presentations, reflecting her life and interests.
