- 'Verbal QE'
- William Watts
So far, no surprises. This looks like a meeting that will see Draghi laying out markers for the future.
Analysts at the Institute for International Finance see the possibility of Draghi utilizing some “verbal QE” in an attempt to weaken the euro, which is now at levels last seen in early 2015 on a trade-weighted basis.
Here’s what they expect:
Draghi will likely recycle the committed tone he had this past Friday during the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, where he reiterated that the ECB will do “whatever is needed” to return inflation back to its target of 2%. Work will continue in the background in case further monetary support is needed later in the year, including preparations to increase the role of national central banks in its QE program and consideration of a tiered approach to applying negative policy rates.
