Apple Inc. reported fourth-quarter earnings after the market close on Tuesday. This is typically Apple’s second-weakest fiscal quarter of the year, coming just ahead of the busy holiday shopping season. But analysts were anticipating strong iPhone sales, fueled by the release of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, which Apple began taking preorders for in September.

Alphabet Inc. will report third-quarter earnings after the market’s close on Thursday. This will be the first earnings the company has reported since its reorganization. Google, the company’s largest and most profitable business segment, is expected to show strong profitability margins with its separation from Alphabet’s more experimental “moonshots” business lines.

I'd like to hear more about YouTube, especially after yesterday's announcement of a new, ad-free subscription service, but that has stayed part of Google and could still be obscured for now.

- A question of when, not if?

ECB policy makers met in sunny Malta -- the central bank twice a year decamps from Frankfurt to hold a policy meeting elsewhere in the eurozone. So far, though, there have been no surprises under the Mediterranean sun, with the ECB opting to leave rates unchanged.
That puts the focus on Mario Draghi, who is expected to again demonstrate that the ECB is ready to expand or extend its stimulus program if needed--but just not yet.
As MarketWatch's Sara Sjolin notes, investors are now speculating about when the central bank will take additional steps, not if. So far, the betting seems to be on December.
