I am a big fan of the old Disneyland attraction posters. They have such a strong, graphic style, and you just LOOK at them and are instantly reminded of the attraction. So I thought it would be fun to take the Disneyland approach and apply it to other iconic attractions – beginning, of course, with the classic Jaws encounter on the Universal Studios Hollywood Tram tour. I resisted putting in the huge carrot teeth, though. Those things were ridiculous.

Tattoo!

Public radio host Jesse Thorn passed this along to me the other day, a tattoo on one of his listeners of the logo I designed for his show, The Sound of Young America. Extremely exciting, I gotta say. And I’m pretty psyched that something I’ve made is now going to last for a good 70 or so more years.

The young woman in question is a certain Heather Scholz from Anchorage, Alaska. The tattoo artist is Maria Garcia.

Yahoo! I did have one person ask if he could use my Staten Island tattoo design (in the Fun Stuff gallery) for a real one, but I haven’t heard if he actually followed through. Anybody else want to pick one of my designs and get it inked on? I’d love to get my whole portfolio out there. Hell, I’ll even pay for your tattoo (within reason) if you wanna pick something cool out of the portfolio and get it done…

Air Force One Two

As you may know, I’m part of a sketch comedy group called Elephant Larry, and we occasionally release Funny Videos™. And as you also may know, I’ve just started dabbling in Final Cut and After Effects. This is a sketch edited, composited and animated by myself. I was very happy with how it came out, especially since it was my first time extensively working with green screen. Enjoy:

826 National Catalog

I live in Park Slope, about two blocks away from the Brooklyn Superhero Supply Co., which is where the self-respecting Metro area superhero does his one-stop shopping for things like Chaos, Invisibility and Capes. It’s also the tongue-in-cheek front of house for the New York branch of 826, a mini-chain of writing & tutoring centers founded by Dave Eggers. It’s also a design nerd’s paradise, with clever copy coexisting with just as smart design to create a convincing universe. Which, as we get into this blog, you’ll see is what I like best.

So imagine my delight upon discovering that they’ve now published a “catalog” of all (read: not all, but quite a few) the weird, fake and wonderful products that they sell at their stores across the country. Favorites include the Echo Park Time Travel Mart’s* “Shade” (a seed that grows into a tree when you time travel 20 years into the future) and the Kitten Plank, a cat-sized walk-the-plank accessory, at the Pirate Supply Store in San Francisco.

It’s also only $12 and it’s totally worth it. Buy it here! I did immediately.

*Whose slogan is “Whenever you are, we are then.” Brilliant.

Battle Royale Poster

My interest in posters has finally led me to start screenprinting my own, and here’s the very first one! My friends Heather & Kevin Chesley recently gave birth to their daughter, Lucy, and I wanted to send them something fun – so I decided to create a boxing poster, featuring a bout between Lucy and our friends Ted & Jordi’s daughter, Evie. I took design inspiration from classic boxing & rock n roll posters, such as the ones made by Hatch Show Print. I’m looking forward to pulling more prints in the future cause I love the way it looks – you can’t get that squishy ink look and random bits of dirt in Illustrator. Larger design here.

This is the SG Zoot Suit by Gibson. It comes in many colors, but I’m really just blown away by this ridiculous rainbow variation. Just gorgeous. Hot damn! Not much else to say. Wish I played more guitar so I could justify being an idiot and buying one. Ah, well.

Welcome to the brand-new StefanRules.com! I’m really excited to finally have my own presence on the InterWebs, and I couldn’t have done it without the help of my good friends over at Bad Feather.They kicked ass on putting this whole thing together and helping me develop it into the best site it could possibly be. I recommend them wholeheartedly.

In addition, I’d also like to thank Anya Garrett for her great work on the photos you see on the site. She’s fun, easy to work with and, as you can see, takes awesome pictures. Check her out as well.

This blog section of the site will be where I share what I’m into, what I’m working on, and so forth. It won’t always be design-related, but I hope it’ll help you get to know me better. I like all kinds of things, so it’ll be a good variety of topics that’ll be covered here. More to come! Stay tuned and be awesome.
