You’ve never been to an after party like this.

We’re doing something a little different with our conference after party and opening it up to GitHub communities outside of our conference attendees. The Big Bang brings together the community to support and celebrate an organization shaping the future of software, Black Girls Code. Featuring two extraordinary acts in the historic Masonic Auditorium, The Big Bang unites Universe attendees and the broader Bay Area community.

The concert is free for all Universe badge holders and open to the public for a $40 donation. All tickets are general admission seating.

Black Girls CODE is devoted to showing the world that black girls can code, and do so much more. By reaching out to the community through workshops and after school programs, Black Girls CODE introduces computer coding lessons to young girls from underrepresented communities in programming languages such as Scratch or Ruby on Rails. Black Girls CODE’s ultimate goal is to provide African-American youth with the skills to occupy some of the 1.4 million computing job openings expected to be available in the U.S. by 2020, and to train 1 million girls by 2040.

Mission Report: GitHub Satellite

On May 11 in Amsterdam, over 500 developers converged at GitHub Satellite to share and hear stories about open source, enterprise software, engineering best practices, and more. In case you missed it, here are some highlights and findings:

We kicked off the day with a session by GitHub CEO Chris Wanstrath, who shared a few brand new developments from around the GitHub Universe.

Unlimited Private Repositories

One of the very best things about Git and other distributed version control systems is the ability to create a new repository without asking permission or getting approval. While this has always been true for our public plans, it hasn’t been the case for individuals and teams working together in private. All of that changed with the introduction of unlimited private repositories into all of our paid plans. For detailed information on pricing changes, check out this blog post.

Electron 1.0

Electron 1.0 represents a major milestone in API stability and maturity. This release allows you to build apps that act and feel truly native on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Building Electron apps is easier than ever with new docs, new tools, and a new app to walk you through the Electron APIs. Check out the full write-up of the new release here.

The GitHub Universe 2016 call for proposals is open until July 31st, and we’re looking for 24 speakers to share their ideas in breakout sessions on September 14-15th. We encourage speakers with all levels of experience to apply, whether it’s your first talk or your fiftieth.

We believe that having a diverse group of speakers fosters a healthy community, stimulates conversation, and exposes fresh ideas. So we’re looking for speakers from different backgrounds, communities, and experiences. To make Universe accessible to a wide range of speakers, we provide an honorarium and travel accommodations to speakers. You can see all the details in the CFP description.

What we’re looking for

The 24 breakout sessions will explore a number of the personal and technical challenges involved in building software. We’re looking for sessions that examine the entire software development process: from before you start writing code, to writing and collaborating on code, through maintaining and scaling your code.

Whether you’re working on an open source project or on an enterprise software team (or both!), we all face similar challenges and we can learn how to overcome them together. You should submit a proposal if you want to share your experiences with:

Workflow. How is software built today, and how will it be built tomorrow? What languages and tools are used, what processes, and what cultures? What is your workflow like, and how has your team been successful with it?
Community. How do you start contributing to open source, and how do you grow a thriving software community? How has learning to code changed? What impact is openness having on public institutions? Which open source projects are having the largest impact on the software community?
Business. What goes into building a modern software team? How can you contribute to, release, and maintain open source projects? What does it mean to use open source principles within your organization?
Ecosystem. What are the tools you use to have a seamless development workflow? How do you deploy, monitor, and scale your code?

GitHub Universe 2015: Mission Report

Last week we launched GitHub Universe, a two-day conference where developers from all over the world convened at Pier 70 to discuss how to build, collaborate on, and deploy great software.

As we gathered in front of the main stage, the octocat appeared in full, living color in an animated short created especially for Universe by the GitHub creative team

To open Universe with a bang, our CEO and co-founder Chris Wanstrath made several announcements about new developments that will make the GitHub experience better than ever.

Partnership with Yubico:

To help users better secure their accounts, GitHub’s authentication system now supports FIDO Universal 2nd Factor (U2F)—a rapidly growing open authentication standard. Yubico’s U2F compliant keys are ready to protect GitHub’s millions of users and their volumes of sensitive data. Thousands of GitHub users redeemed a discount to purchase a new key. The 20% discount on YubiKeys is still available to any GitHub user while supplies last.

Integrations Directory:

It’s now easier than ever to use your favorite tools with GitHub. Check out these powerful integrations, including Travis-CI and Slack, and build better software, together.

Git Large File Storage (LFS):

Git LFS replaces large files such as audio samples, videos, datasets, and graphics with text pointers inside Git, while storing the file contents on a remote server like GitHub.com or GitHub Enterprise. Check it out.
