Children drown as hundreds fleeing Fallujah risk lives crossing Euphrates River

At least three children and an elderly man drowned in the Euphrates River over the weekend as they attempted to flee the Iraqi city of Fallujah. Some 200 people escaping relentless violence have successfully crossed the river using inflatable rings or makeshifts rafts made up of refrigerators and tires. The International Rescue Committee is identifying and providing critical support to the most vulnerable people making their way to safety.

May 6, 2016 1:56 PM EDT - In response to yesterday's attack on a camp for displaced Syrians, which left dozens of civilians dead and wounded, the International Rescue Committee Turkey's Deputy Director of Programs, Meghan Garrity said:
"The killing of innocent people in a place where they had hoped to find safety is abhorrent. This is a disturbing new low in a war that has already shocked the world with routine attacks against hospitals, schools and bakeries. And it’s not the first such attack: The IRC is aware of seven other displacement camps that have been hit by airstrikes or indirect fire since March."

AN UPDATE FROM HADLEY:
After months of unpacking and analyzing the SIHPI team’s researchfrom this summer, we have come full circle. We presented this past weekend atthe Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) conference in SanFrancisco. Our poster included a condensed version of what is in our (soon-to-be-madepublic report). However, the conference really was the end point of a muchlonger journey of analyzing our data.

After returning from India, we worked with design-thinkingconsultant Liz Ogbu to come up with astrategy to parse the large amount of data we had collected last summer. Ourstrategy included selecting a representative sample of our interviews with eachof the players we had identified in the pharmaceutical network of peri-urbanMumbai. We then broke each of these interviews down into their individualquotes, facts and details, and then sorted these fragments into cohesivethemes. Within each theme we identified insights to illuminate the complexityof both prescription practice and pharmaceutical networks in our area of study.

The team worked throughout the fall on this process of insightidentification before delving into the writing and editing portion in thewinter. Finally, with a final draft in hand, we focused on creating a posterthat could convey the breadth of our research in an accessible way.

Some of the highlights of the conference included the “What’s Hotin Global Health” panel, moderated by Stanford’s own Michelle Barry. The panelshowcased a wide variety of fascinating new technologies coming out of both U.C.Berkeley and Stanford and the impact they could have on combatting some of thechallenges in global health today. Our poster presentation was, of course, alsoa highlight. It was interesting to talk with other researchers who had workedin both similar and different areas of the world and debate the similaritiesand differences of the contexts within which we had all worked. It was asuccessful weekend, and we are excited for the final publication of our reportto be expected within the next month.

This summer, the fellows spent seven weeks investigating the pharmaceutical networks in urban Mumbai in an effort to understand how informal providers interface with pharmaceutical networks and whether it impacts how they practice, prescribe and dispense medication. Grant Miller (in photo below), an associate professor of medicine and director of the India Health Policy Initiative, says the fellowship has two objectives: "One is to develop a nuanced, on-the-ground understanding of thepractical realities that often cause otherwise promising health programs in India to fail. The other is to provide in-depth, non-clinical field experienceto Stanford students interested in global health.

"And we are demanding. We require a preparatory quarter during the spring, our fellows then spend all summer in India, and during the fall quarter, they prepare a report with their findings and insights.
