Global WordPress Translation Day 2 on November 12th, 2016

The first Global WordPress Translation Day was so much fun and made a real difference for us as a global team. That’s why on November 12th, we’re doing it again and everyone can join!

What are we doing?

  • Local translation contributor days – as many as possible (last time we had more than 50, let’s beat that!)
  • Remote events for as many languages as possible to support contributors who would like to join from their home
  • 24 hours of live streaming sessions about localization and internationalization (L10n and i18n).

Who are the sessions for?

  • New contributors who would like to learn how to translate WordPress in their language
  • New and experienced translation editors – the sessions will have useful tips and advice how to build and maintain a strong translation team
  • Developers who would like to find translators for their projects – the sessions will teach you how to work with the polyglots team and how to build a translation community around your products
  • Developers who would like to learn how to prepare their plugins and themes for localization
  • Everyone who would like to learn how translations work in WordPress and get a general idea of the work of the Polyglots team.

When is it happening?

On November 12th, 2016, starting at exactly 0:00 UTC.

See when the event starts for you!

Why are we doing it?

  • To have fun and get to know each other better.
  • To encourage more translation contributors to get involved and expand the WordPress Polyglots team
  • To improve the general understanding of how WordPress deals with translations among the development community
  • To create strong connections between the plugin and theme authors and the WordPress translation community

How can you join?

Please also comment below if you’d like to get involved but are not sure how. We’ll help you out!

That’s it for now. Let’s make the second one even better.

Cheers!

Petya

Help us validate 5 WooCommerce extensions in 24 locales

Thanks to GoDaddy’s initiative to support localization of WordPress plugins & themes, we at Automattic received translations of 5 plugins in 24 locales.

  1. WooCommerce
  2. Storefront Product Pagination
  3. Storefront Product Sharing
  4. Storefront Sticky Add to Cart
  5. WooCommerce Gateway Stripe

Validation process (2 options)

There are two ways you can use the translation files we have.

1. Review the translation using the PO files, then import them (you will receive credits).

OR

2. Review Waiting strings on translate.wordpress.org. I will import everything in one week (in case GTEs prefer the method 1) as Waiting status.

  • Please feel free to leave a comment if you want the import to happen sooner for your locale.
  • If you don’t have time to validate, the translations will just stay as “Waiting”. There is no time limit to review them.

Locales

Note to validators

  • There may not be all 5 translation files for your locale. That’s because some of the plugins are 100% completed already.
  • Preparing these files involved a bit of manual work on my side, so if you see any technical flaws it’s probably my fault. Please don’t hesitate to point them out, and I’d be glad to fix/investigate the cause.
  • Thanks in advance for your help!

Notes from the Polyglots chats on October 12th

Here are the combined notes from the Asia Pacific and Europe/Americas Polyglots chats on October 12th. Thank you to @nao for hosting the Asia Pacific chat (you can do it too, next time, raise your hand!)

Locale stats

Releases: 163 (±0) locale, 72 (+1) up to date, 0 (±0) behind by minor versions, 6 (-1) behind by one major version, 17 (±0) behind more than one major version, 60 (-1) have site but never released, 8 (-1) have no site.

Translations:
163 (±0) total, 68 (+2) at 100%, 4 (±0) over 95%, 5 (±0) over 90%, 25 (-1) over 50%, 54 (-1) below 50%, 82 (+1) have a language pack generated, 7 (±0) have no project.

There are 13 unresolved editor requests and 11 unresolved locale requests.

There are 462 (±0) GTE, 1061 (±0) PTE and 11470 (±0) translation contributors.
(A wordpress.org account could have multiple roles over different locale)

Tech update:

  • To organize a local event for GWTD you now can use your own o2 https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/2016/10/07/new-team-o2s/. It’s a great place to discuss bigger items and stuff which should persist for a longer time.
  • Javascript i18n post was published on make/core – https://make.wordpress.org/core/2016/10/10/javascript-internationalization/. The team would love some feedback from the Polyglots team and other local developers

Asia Pacific

  • Thai (#th) is now at 100%. Chinese/China (#zh_CN) needs some more help (@kenshino/@robertsky will try reaching out to the Singaporean community).
  • The REST API plugin & OAuth plugin need a string review for i18n readiness.
    • They are not yet translatable on translate.wordpress.org
  • Team o2s: please make use of them. You can post in your language. To translate the interface, go to the P2 “Breath” and o2 meta projects.
  • Global WordPress Translation Day
    • @vachan added Mumbai local event (#hi_IN and #mr).
    • We want to recruit more local event organizers, speakers, and co-hosts.
  • Open discussion: @casiepa brought up a question of “When a plugin author wants to request a new PTE, should he set a very old thread to ‘unresolved’ or open a new one?” He said opening a new thread helps keep more accurate stats. @nao said leaving a comment on an old thread seems fine for now. No conclusion was established, but both agreed that a “service request” plugin solution would be a better process.

Europe, North America, South America, Africa

  • Global WordPress Translation Day
    • @vertizio is interested in hosting the Dutch edition of GWTD #2.
    • Sergey will work on a session about translating WordPress to Russian
    • Petya is hoping to get more sessions like that for more languages – Hebrew, Serbian, Romanian, Thai, Vietnamese, Gujarati, Marathi, Hindi – anyone who would like to do one is welcome, please let us know
    • More local events to be added to the spreadsheet in the upcoming weeks (Spain, Italy, Serbia, Romania, The Netherlands)
    • @petya asked everyone to post on their Rosetta sites about Global WordPress Translation Day no matter if they’re organising an event or not
