Usage
This is the basic outline of using StatCounter :
- sign up for an account [link]
- make a new project [link]
- put the tracking code on your site [link]
- view which stats interest you and / or setup email reports and have the stats emailed to you

For the best tracking results your StatCounter code should be on every page of the site.
How you'll want to install the code depends on what type of website you have. Many sites offer a footer area, sidebar or analytics section that displays on each page. We have many installation guides at the URL below. If yours is not listed please try adding the code into the footer of the site. If that does not work please contact support and we will assist you.

Tracking code
The StatCounter tracking code is what's used to collect stats on your visitors. It must be on any page you want tracked. It can run on any site which allows you to use HTML or Javascript code. The tracking code works for HTTP (unsecure) and HTTPS (secure) connections.
The StatCounter code *can not* be used to track emails.

Importing Google keyword data
In many cases Google search hides keywords visitors are using to find your site.Those entries show up like this : (Keywords Unavailable).
StatCounter can import these unavailable keywords from Google with these steps :
- click on your project name
- click Config at the top left
- click Import GWT Data
This only has to be done one time, after being setup it will import the data automatically in the future.Once the stats are imported you can see them under the GWT Data report. More info in our blog post linked below:

All StatCounter users can have their stats emailed to them and others. Upgraded accounts get access to our customizable report options and can get reports sent more frequently, see link below:
Configure
To get to the configure menu for your project open statcounter.com, click the project name, then click "Config" at the top of the left menu.
- ISP blocking - Allows you to ignore hits from certain internet service providers.
- Edit project settings - Controls the basic project settings : project name, url, IP's who's hits to ignore, time zone, visitor IP masking and more.
- IP labels - You can assign a name to certain IP addresses which will show up next to their entries in the stats.
- Customize Counter - If you're using a visible counter how it looks can be adjusted here. The total pageload/visitor count can also be adjusted here.
- Cookie Opt-Out - Disables the StatCounter tracking cookie from being placed on your visitors browser.
- User/Public Access - Add users to your account & control of the stats are public or not

Downloading your stats
StatCounter offers the ability to download many of your stats. At the bottom of the reports menu is a link for "Download Logs".For several reports in the upper right corner it says "Log:" and list your log capacity.To the left of that are two small icons. These are links to download the stats for the report you are looking at.The icon on the left with a green X is the Excel spreedsheet, the icon on the right with the red CSV is a plain "comma separated value" spreedsheet file.Under the Summary Chart (bottom left) are links that let you download the info as a spreadsheet or image file.
If you do not have Excel a free alternative called Open Office can be use to open spreadsheet files.Spreedsheets can also be opened online using Google Docs [link]. In Google Spreadsheets you make a new document, then File > Open and select Upload.

Filters
Filters can be used to show or hide certain hits. For example you may want to only see hits from a certain city or you may want to exclude hits from a certain ISP's.At the top of several reports is a Filter button. If you click this button it will display the various filters available for that report.Please see our blog post below for more info:

Definitions
- Detailed stats - Specific info about your visitors such as their IP, location, browser type, and pages they loaded.
- Hit - When a visitor opens a page on your site, also referred to as a pageload.
- IP masking - Hides the last part of their IP in the stats.
- Log - This holds all of your detailed stats. It has a has a finite limit and removes the oldest stats to make room for new stats.
- Log size - Represents how many detailed stats can be stored. The free log comes with a log size of 500, so it can hold detailed stats for the last 500 hits. To hold more detailed stats you can adjust the log size at this page.
- Pageload - When a visitor opens a page on your site, also referred to as a hit.
- Returning visitor - A visitor who has been to the site before and has returned.
- Tracking code - The StatCounter code placed on your site to collect stats on visitors.
- Unique visitor - Represents one visitor to the site.
