Good but needs more to replace other apps Love Google assistant, I think that is a home run. Love the stickers and overall layout of the app. The app needs to be able to handle SMS. Merge this app with messenger and then you can treat this like iMessage where those who have Allo message on Allo and those who don't just use SMS. Also, need to be able to reply on Android 7.0 from the notification tab like all other messaging apps. This app is late to the game so not sure how to pull people away from using WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, WeChat, etc.

Nice replacement for messenger but not a replacement for Hangouts yet. Suggestions and games are nice, but needs to recognize more phrases. App needs hangouts integration, clean SMS integration, tablet app and a desktop app. I'd be happy to use it for everything if it had these features. After using it for a full day, I wouldn't recommend this as a replacement for Hangouts. They should have introduced the assistant in Hangouts and kept running with that app. It's much more well polished and already has a large user base. I'd be surprised if the app makes it.

No GV support No Google voice integration so I hate it already. Not going to set this up on a prepaid number so it's DOA for me. Just bring back GTalk already and integrate it into Android so we finally have something that looks and sounds like iMessage. That's what most people want and this is just another messenger that people are going to bug family and friends to adopt. It was hard enough to convince people to start using hangouts and now there is a new one.

Has potential but needs work. Colors, themes, dark mode etc.. please allow for this because that what Google and Android saying is... "Together not the same" Also would like to be able to make a default SMS app. I dont see myself using it due to it not being very useful when it can't be set as default for incoming SMS from different platforms. Notifications on the lock screen don't work on Samsung and LG phones. Needs some work. Messaging and SMS combined will help make this a lot more useful of an app.

Cool features, but I want it to expand This messaging app so far is super cool. I'm a huge fan of the text sizes and asking Google things in any chat. But I'd love to see more customization for chat bubble colors and chat backgrounds. Maybe even what font you can use. And the big tjing is it doesnt have SMS integration, which would make this my default app instead of samsungs app or the facebook chat i use most of the time. This is new so I will guess that's all in the works but that would make my rating skyrocket.

Now that's how Google kill it Very well designed, launched keeping all the possible updates in any messenger app, till now it's far better than any other messaging app. Loved the new features especially the suggestions. All I can say is allo has no demerits or lack points as of now, if the beginning is so strong, m too excited for further updates. Awesome work👍👍

Really great so far! The assistant function is fantastic. I love that it can be incorporated with all conversations. I'm having some issues with quick reply in that I cannot type my own response, I can only use suggested responses unless I actually open the app. Also I cannot make Allo my default messenging app on my phone. Last two things. I wish I could customize the app more. While I enjoy the read receipts, I do wish you could turn them off or better yet, chose which conversations you want to utilize that feature.
Some features + real sms needed Liking messages is something groupme has that I feel is great in a messaging app and this doesn't have that. It would also be great to have a way of talking to people directly in a group chat like how in groupme you can do @name and it comes up in bold and gives the recipient an extra notification. Also the way texting is set up where recipients are basically sent a glorified ad to download allo makes it impossible to use as an SMS app
Neep improvements Great work by google. It is a fun app especially google assistant and shout feature. But I want to address some issues here: 1) please add the feature to select the multiple messages in a chat, right now only one messege can be selected. 2) google assistant is using google app as its search engine. Like if I say to it that call john then it will open google app and then try to call john. Please, make it available to do task right from the allo app. Otherwise app is great.
Has potential , but needs to grow. As a first launch, this app is amazing. With WhatsApp breaking it's promise of never having ads or selling your information and Telegram growing stagnant in development, Allo has the potential to be an amazing app. It just needs better stickers (like Telegram) and a desktop application as well as better Wear support to catch up with the others. I also would like to see SMS integration as well. Right now, there's nothing that sets Allo apart from every other messaging app out there.
SMS The strange SMS feature boggles me. Why can I not set Allo as my default SMS app when it is linked to my phone number? How are people going to convince everyone on their contact list to switch? Those users will also have to convince THEIR contacts to switch and so on. 5 stars if it wasn't for this goofy restriction that requires me to have 2 apps to communicate via text if I want to use Allo .
The app had amazing features but still needs work The messaging features are great, but the integration with sms is non-existent. Many people use sms only, and a good integration with sms would encourage many more users to try the app. An iMessage style integration would be perfect. There is no quick reply from the notification(where you can type a full message) as there is for most messaging apps, such as Google messenger or hangouts. There is also not good support for Android wear, which should allow you to read through your chats and reply to messages.
Good It's really good and fun to use however it definitely isn't in the same ballpark as iMessage. The only two things I would change are... I would like to see the user have more control over privacy ie which messages are stored by Google and the ability to delete items on demand. And the second thing would be seamless integration of sms messaging. If it had those two things this app would blow iMessage out of the water.
Potentially great. Stupid design decisions. I get the idea is to copy WhatsApp but add Google magic. I get that WhatsApp achieved huge success without things like Web Clients and multiple device messaging. Here's the thing: It's late 2016. No messaging service of consequence doesn't have a web client, including WhatsApp. **Messaging FIRST**. I'm not going to pester my friends and family to install an app if they have a better chance reaching me on any service I can access at my desk. I can't believe how long we had to wait for this.
I usually support Google technologies...but this makes no sense to me. Where is the deskto app? Where are the "quote/reply" and "edit message" buttons? At least it works flawlessly, and you can attach videos, record audio, and compared to WhatsApp it supports animated GIF/WEBM; but still this looks like a step back over Hangouts and Telegram: 3 Stars and not 2 only because of the Google Assistant inline.
Great app, just not a true messaging app I love this app, so far the functionality is amazing. The unfortunate part is that it doesn't have SMS support. I don't want to need multiple apps for SMS and chat. This should be able to determine if recipients are using Allo messaging or just SMS. Continue to offer new recipients the option to download Allo, but if they don't then continue the message thread via regular SMS. Once this is added it's definitely a 5 star app.
Great potential, needs SMS integration Google is onto something with Allo, but it's not ready for prime time. If you want to see wide-scale adoption (cross platform!), You NEED to implement native SMS support like Hangouts. Also desperately needed: a desktop and tablet client. Linking to phone number is a good idea, but you should also be able to sign in with Google account on tablets / PCs to message from there.
Has potential but not usable yet If you only talk to other Android user that have this app installed and you ONLY use this app to converse then it's an nice upgrade from others apps, that is until you go to leave it and realize you have to de register. With all that said, I won't be using this app as it is terrible if you are texting an apple user or someone who doesn't want the allo app. Additionally hangouts has more communication options for Android to android. This app has potential but I award Google no points for this one.
Cool Features, that no one will use It works a lot like Messenger, but with a few bonus features. Google assistant can be useful, the auto responses are accurate. The problem is that there is no one to use it with. Because there is no SMS support, the only reason I would use this app is to chat with the 1 person in my contacts who uses the app. And the features really aren't enough for me to try to pull all my friends off of Facebook messenger, which has multiplatform support I might add, or converting my friends over from SMS.
Pretty good...but One of the best messaging apps I've used, Google assistance is really neat. I only have a few issues though, the app often lags a bit, and it drains your battery. SMS capability would be useful, right now you're not able to set Allo as your default sms app. It could use more colors, perhaps a dark mode. I know the app is still new, and Google assistance is still in beta, so I have high hopes for this app in future updates :) keep up the good work!
Great idea, but... I was really hoping for a replacement SMS messenger. It fully depends on the other side having Allo, which means that I need to keep using my SMS messenger to talk to those iPhone die-hards. By not being able to be set as M default and messenger, it loses a lot of appeal. Regardless, the app has great features and I'm excited to see what happens.
few improvements n it can beat any existing msngr make the UI a bit better - no white background, make the panel displaying name/grpName opaque and fill color, the chat msgs colors should b light, spacing b/w msgs should b lessened so tht user can view more msgs in a frame. Adhoc changes- allow multiple msg selection, voice calling.hope it helps
Pretty amazing Very lightweight and beautifier designed! Very impressive feat, considering users' capabilities and the assistant. I absolutely love it. Please make it SMS handleable, it's annoying to receive SMS in one app and send in another. Edit: end to end encryption is mandatory. Also mssaging is somehow, sometimes faster then SMS, so ideal should be to integrate SMS and internet seamlessly. Otherwise, many people will ask themselves "Why use yet another SMS app if WhatsApp works fine and with end to end encryption."
Missing the ability to use from more than one device such as my tablet or desktop. Can't use without SMS number tied try account. @google is the only assistant so far. No @notifications for users. Can't edit messages after they're sent. Won't upload images from links like imgur. No Wear integration. Incognito chats are not in the same chat but are a new chat. Doesn't offer anything new that isn't already done by the main competitor. On the positive side we can at least remove people from group hangouts. SMS fallback is nice but not worth it for being tied to one device.

Hi Thomas. Thanks for your review! We'll pass this along to the Allo team so we can keep making Allo even better. Happy messaging and thanks again! Great idea but... Needs a big overhaul of features. SMS integration is needed. If trying to compete with iMessage, make the integration of SMS and Allo seamless. Do not force others to download app, simply convert to Allo message when the other person has Allo. If not, send as SMS. Make this the stock messenger in Android. Include web interface, design customization, etc. This is a good app, with a great idea that could be a huge game changer if done correctly.
A lot more fun that it looks. At first glance, just another chat app. But the google assistant IS really great. I will mirror what everyone is saying. PLEASE true SMS support. I want to use it as a single app. Not have to have two. It's hard enough to try to get people to switch. Also, one personal request, an option to press enter to send. Really though, great job so far guys, but I was more options and features, don't stop working on it.
Skeptical at first, better once you realize the potential I was skeptical at first. I didn't really see the big difference between hangouts and Allo. But after using it for a day or two, I'm starting to realize how awesome this app is. The integration with the Google Assistant is so helpful (try typing @google in any chat thread). The voice message thing is great for answering in the car. Excited to see more features, esp with the Google Assistant
Missing key features The features offered by this app are modern and appealing, including the shout function, expiring chats, and private notifications. However, the lack of encryption outside of incognito mode is highly disappointing. I would also love to see true SMS functionality, integration with duo, and a quick reply option. My main issues are the lack of encryption and lack of true SMS capabilities. Based on these issues, I cannot comfortably use allo
The person who named the app might be an Indian 🇮🇳 #Allooo🔊 😂👌 It's a great first step 👏 but need more features like "status bar", "last seen at", "file sharing" & also add the feature to select multiple msgs in a chat... right now only one msg can be selected. & I would love a button that links you to duo! A simple tap and you are ready to call a friend.
I am torn on this... So I like the idea but here is the main issue. Not only is this proprietary like hang outs was it doesn't support SMS and MMS like hang outs and many other apps do. The assistant feature is cool but not enough to over take the popularity of the current platforms. What people really want is a unified communication platform one app that is well done for everything. Not another one trick pony that will only work if everyone decides to switch. That being said the assistant is really cool.
Few things to fix The pictures sent don't have anything separating it from the texts. Like a border.. So if you send a screen shot of the chat to someone.. It's really trippy as you can't differentiate between the pic of the chat and the actual chat... Oh yeah. Predictive answering is cool tho.................... Edit : ENGINEERS WHY WON'T YOU LET THE GOOGLE ASSISTANT SWEAR..IT SAYS YOU WON'T LET HIM..WHY?
Great functionality, but missing essential features Until this app has normal SMS fallback for messaging people without Allo, it will be useless for communicating with most people. Sending an SMS from this app looks like spam to the recipient. If this app had SMS fallback similar to iMessage, it would be 5 stars, but in its current state it isn't worth opening just to communicate with the few other person using it. This app needs to be a full replacement for an SMS app if it wants to catch on.
Huuuuge Potential I've been waiting for Allo since they announced at Google I/O 16. In my mind, and I'm pretty sure in many people's minds as well, this was going to be the iMessage killer. Well... It turns out it's one more instant messenger app just like What'sApp, Telegram, WeChat and many others. Very disappointed. Hey Google, for what it's worth, you guys are amazing in what you do, you just need a better guidance to create more meaningful and useful apps. Again Allo needs to send and receive SMS and a webapp as well.
It is OK... Want SMS integration, need to give ability to make default, ability to use Allo on a computer, ability to save picture if drawn on before sending, and force everyone to ditch their messaging app made by the manufacturer and force them to Allo. If you want to be as good or better than iOS messenger you need to deliver same functions or go beyond. Granted when I saw iOS messenger with their whisper/shout function I cringed a little. 4 stars may be a little generous but I just want more from this app.
The future Android SMS app! This is what Google messenger should have been. Great, fluid app that's still needs some polish. With better SMS integration, it could rival that of iMessage on iOS. I really think that they could kill off Hangouts and Messenger and just use this as the default messaging app. Obviously they would have to offer desktop support, but that could be done. Maybe with enough feedback, they would consider it 😎
No SMS intergration, even though Google said Allo would have it? I LIKE this app. I WANT to use this app. I WANT my friends to use it. But cmon, Google, no SMS integration is shooting yourself in the foot. Right now I am trying to get my wife to adopt it. Collaborating with Google Assistant is awesome and has so much potential. However, because SMS isn't integrated, I predict both her and I will eventually forget about this app, and default back to Messenger, since that is where the majority of my conversations are happening.
I don't understand Is Google just bored? You have Hangouts: Video calling, instant data messaging, data calling, and SMS (big note on sms). A jack of all trades could have just added Google assistant, and the fancy new features of allo and maybe even the theme of allo to Hangouts and call it a day. You have duo ? Could have just added duo to Hangouts improving the video calling. You have messenger? Could have just made SMS support on Hangouts better? At least give us SMS support on allo for us average Joe's!! Please 😒
Bugs! Cannot set as default sms messenger, didn't load previous convos, won't load new sms messages.. basically not working. I'm on a nexus 6 running 7.0. Been waiting months for this app. Will update review when issues are fixed. Also, why is there no Android wear support? .gifs? Come on Google, we both know you are better then this.
You guys know better Google, you know better. You know that we wanted SMS integration. You know that multiple device support is what keeps hangouts from being obsolete. You guys know! Yet, ALL OF the things that justified me training friends and family to use Hangouts were REMOVED! I want to like this app. It's clean, it's fun, and the Google Assistant works in the coolest possible way. Unless we start taking SMS seriously in this app, I'm not quite sure I'll be ever be able to use it regularly.
Amazing No words to say ... Google assistance is too good. Please update more personalization options . and make it as a default messaging app in future android updates ... There is no information those who are using allo in my contacts list... There is No video, music and contacts sharing and also status option and . in groups there is no admin facility. Please add whisper ink and bubble effect like imessage that's it thank you
