We're looking for an experienced engineering manager to help lead a distributed team of Git Infrastructure engineers. This role is not about dictating or managing a team member’s work directly, but rather guiding and serving to ensure the happiness and productivity of the team. The primary goal of this job is to enable every team member to do the best work of their lives.
At GitHub, the Git Infrastructure team builds and maintains the services that store and serve Git repositories, both directly to users and to other layers in the GitHub software stack. We write, deploy, debug, and maintain a variety of microservices, protocols, proxies, and control systems that allow Git to run as a robust, world-wide distributed system. Our languages of choice are Ruby, C, and Go.
The Git Infrastructure team is part of the Infrastructure group, which provides the hardware and low-level software systems that underpin the rest of GitHub. While Git Infrastructure has an application development slant, candidates can put SRE experience to use on this team.
The Engineering organization is highly distributed and the right candidate can thrive in an environment of asynchronous communication. We expect you to have strong written communication skills and be able to create working relationships with coworkers in locations around the globe.
Responsibilities:
- Actively write software as a technical leader on the team
- Guiding the development team’s vision, best practices, and priorities
- Meeting 1-1 with team members on a regular basis
- Planning and supporting career development
- Giving guided performance feedback
- Serving as hiring manager for the team
- Reviewing code and leading small group discussions about engineering issues
- Exploring the technical tradeoffs of every decision
- Coordinating work with engineering teams across the stack
Minimum Qualifications:
- Experience managing engineering teams
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Passionate about creating and fostering good engineering practices and processes
- Working knowledge of Systems languages (C, Ruby, and Go)
- Experience investigating bugs and performance issues in Linux-based systems
- Experience building high performance services at scale
Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive experience managing/working on distributed teams
- Experience with Git internals
- Experience with OSS
